New Requirements. So this got posted in our work groupchat today, keep in mind we work at a college store. Does this seem fair to anyone? (i.redd.it)
submitted by malie1101
mangitogaming 278 points 1y ago
Completely unreasonable. They are basically saying “fuck your availability” especially since your location is at a college so I’m assuming a majority if not all of you are in school
livingfortheliquid 86 points 1y ago
Then yell "nObOdy wAnTs to wORk"
mangitogaming 25 points 1y ago
Exactly. It’s not that people don’t want to work, it’s that people are tired of being taken advantage of
malie1101 [OP] 34 points 1y ago
yeah we are pretty much all college students 😐
Seriously_jst_4real 3 points 1y ago
Sounds like they are trying to find a way to close the store (inability to get/keep staff).
Comfortable-Plane944 238 points 1y ago
I mean I get it for the business needs, butttt. Also Night Shift never works during peak. In our store you’re usually either morning or night so a large chunk of parnters never work peak
hipbs23 57 points 1y ago
And in return morning people don't have frappy hour😭
Broad-Flounder-4971 31 points 1y ago
Oh. We most certainly do. 😭
Royal-Plastic7784 23 points 1y ago
In Texas, cold bar is usually a nightmare.
Broad-Flounder-4971 17 points 1y ago
I’m also in Texas. Cold bar is chaos. So many venti frappes per car. They would do trenta if we eat them 🥲
Have_Donut 3 points 1y ago
I work in AZ. Frappe Hour can start at 5:30am
pupgarcia 1 points 1y ago
no bcs ppl will order a Venti vanilla bean frap with extra caramel drizzle at 6am 😭
friendlySkeletor 183 points 1y ago
"fuck you if you have another job or classes or other circumstances"
Lmao okay
cringeqween13 52 points 1y ago
Literally why I quit. They said if I wanted more hours I needed to open my availability, but if I opened my availability I couldn't have a 2nd jobs because of the inconsistent schedule.
affectionatepath1990 2 points 1y ago
Exactly!
Ordinary-Theory-8289 -5 points 1y ago
I mean…you can’t have limited availability and also lots of hours. You do see how that’s a contradiction right? lol
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
My 'limited availability' was saturday-wednesday from 11am to 8:30pm (10:30pm on the nights we did clean play)
affectionatepath1990 1 points 1y ago
Yea but if you open up your hours you aren’t going to get full time. They want you to open up your hours for 25-30 hours a week but the schedule doesn’t allow flexibility for a second job or school. That’s the contradiction mitch.
FTorrez81 1 points 1y ago
i have limited availability from 5am-2pm Sat-Tue and all day from Wed-Fri.

my SM solidified me as a morning partner when she adjusted it like a month ago without my input: 5am-12pm every day.

i get 20-25 hrs a week. it’s possible tbh

this is my part timer though. i’ll admit i got really lucky bc my SM was highly flexible at the time of my hire. she was more understanding. i was honest about my full time job and student status.

she’s recently become more clear cut with availability expectations with new-hires though. won’t hire unless you have open availability.
affectionatepath1990 1 points 1y ago
Sounds like the exception not the rule.
ThankfulWonderful -39 points 1y ago
Idk I would choose my class schedule around what my manager wanted me to work pre Starbucks when I lived in Boston. They had requirements like these- except for being available both weekend days for baristas.

Why is that such an unreasonable request? I’m not sure how it’s a fuck you to ask for availability for a job. Like the business isn’t beholden to my class schedule
Internal-Ad-8820 27 points 1y ago
So it's a bit of a wierd situation because the company advertises that it has flexible scheduling which means they automatically should be working with the partner to find scheduling that fits both the partner and Starbucks. There's also the fact that when partners get hired on they talk over availability with the hiring manager and if the hiring manager agrees with the partner's availability they hire them on, and don't hire them if they don't agree. With the current partners, the manager has already agreed to their availability so it's really shady for the manager to then decide no it's not okay and try to force the partner into a different availability.

I wanna say it's a breach of contract but I'm not 100% sure on that.
0x52and1x52 3 points 1y ago
Definitely not since we don’t have a contract with Starbucks. We’re at-will employees in all 50 US states.
Broad-Flounder-4971 18 points 1y ago
They don’t pay me enough to have across the board availability. Although, I am usually open to come in when needed, it’s never unreasonable for a person to set boundaries on their time. We only get one life and I certainly don’t want to waste it being beholden to the whims of Starbucks when Starbucks won’t even pay me more than 12/hr and expects me to have 45s drive thru times.
ThankfulWonderful -1 points 1y ago
That’s fine- I am honestly curious why are you in this sub Reddit complaining about Starbucks if you hate Starbucks so much? Seems like you’re wasting your time and energy.

Call centers, CVS, or other food service places all hire entry level work if you aren’t interested in Starbucks benefits and culture.
Broad-Flounder-4971 0 points 1y ago
Starbucks is the best fast food job in my area and I can’t do WFH phone jobs thanks to my children. If I could get a different/better job, I assure you that I would.

Being critical of a shitty company doesn’t feel like a waste of time for me. I think not holding them accountable is fucked up. We, as the working class, need to be LOUD about the standards that the workforce should have.
ThankfulWonderful -10 points 1y ago
Maybe not like totally open across the bird for a college student but it seems like OP’s manager has specific times they want like 10-2 three days a week and only one day for the weekends… idk that just doesn’t sound that unreasonable. I would probably try to finesse the SM and say is 9-1 ok or 11-3 if I had a class that didn’t exactly line up.
Broad-Flounder-4971 12 points 1y ago
Again, if they want more availability, maybe don’t pay slave wages 🥰. Also, like PP said, the partners tell the hiring manager their availability and they either agree to hire or don’t. You don’t rearrange your life for slave wages, man.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 4 points 1y ago
Are you somehow not aware of how college class schedules work?
crazysockz 9 points 1y ago
This one is in a college town so I think it’s important for them to note school comes first.
I go to a fairly large university and in my junior and senior years, there were 1-2 offerings of each class I had to take in order to graduate. So I had to plan around those classes for work. It often resulted in forcing me to wake up at 3:30 am to go open, and drive straight to class exhausted, or forced me to close which I was involved in student govt. and other important activities for an entry level resume so closing wasnt an option. That may just be me, but I mean i’m sure some people are working on resume builders and only have a few options for a class. I had my once weekly 8 am to 11 am then 2-5 which kinda put me in the position of needing to take that day off. I always give 1 day on the weekends but also, these kids are college students. Not always easy to switch up your sleeping schedule to go to bed at 10pm to get up in time for opening on a Friday night when kids are blaring music 2 dorms down. The business isn’t “beholden” to it but they also knew what they were signing up for when they hired on probably at least 10 college students. Of course, not trying to come off rude. Just coming from a current college kid working for the Siren that it can be difficult. Especially depending on how your manager schedules- I have had some managers that only schedule you if you can work 8 hour shifts and some that schedule in 4, 5, and 6 hour increments with shifts sometimes getting the 8 hour shifts. And maybe sometimes a barista will get thrown an 8 hour shift here and there or even as little as a 3 hour shift non-coverage if they really need hours and a truck is coming. If this store in particular schedules mainly 8 hour shifts in a college town that’s their own problem.
PK_Pixel 2 points 1y ago
I am very jealous of your college if you're able to simply pick your classes to be whenever you want. Some of my major classes were only available for one time slot. A lot, actually.
ThankfulWonderful 0 points 1y ago
We’d wake up early on registration day and spam the website to get what we wanted as soon as it opened. I’d figure out what I wanted to take and when with an advisor the week before- with the class numbers so I didn’t have to search by keyword or something day of when it was a scramble. And then on registration day when everything went live it was a first come first serve for nearly everything….
PK_Pixel 1 points 1y ago
Still doesn't guarantee placement. I worked at a Starbucks near a uni and they were extremely accommodating for the fact we were students.
whatisprofound 93 points 1y ago
Why would you need everyone to be both openers AND closers? Clopens are a nightmare and certainly not ok for college students
leopardsocks 31 points 1y ago
I thought clopening wasn’t allowed? Or maybe my SM actually cares about us lol
aee78 22 points 1y ago
There is supposed to be 8 hrs between shifts, so depending on store's operating hours, there might not be 8 hrs between.
My SM tries not to schedule clopens, but occasionally there's just no one else avaible.
Long-Carpenter8283 6 points 1y ago
I’m a clopener. Close three days a week, open two. It’s not fun, but the money is pretty sweet.
havensward 14 points 1y ago
This is what's confusing me.

I wasn't in a college town, but my store was high volume since it's near a highway entrance to NYC. Opens, Mornings, and Closers always worked their time slot. Consistency bred efficiency, and very few people had all day availability. My manager would ask for coverage if she needed it for whatever reason, but she never expected anyone to work outside their availability.

I can't help wondering if state guided workers rights have any influence here - it's baffling to be that they thought this is appropriate.
cookiemonstah87 12 points 1y ago
After working many different jobs over the years with "flexible scheduling," this is the best way to keep people from calling out, too. It's not uncommon for people to call out for a closing shift on a Saturday if they don't usually work that shift. Ditto for the opening half of a clopen. Give people consistency and they'll be more consistent.
thedevvylee 7 points 1y ago
Yea my manager used to schedule me to close back when we closed at 8:30pm then have the opening shift at 4:30am the next morning. Wasn’t getting much sleep since 20 minute drive home plus dinner and getting ready for bed then I had to be up at 3:30am to get ready and drive 20 minutes to work. I was looking at 5 hours if I’m lucky if we got out on time. All while having school work. I was online school but still had to get work done. And she said she couldn’t really work around it because of short staffing and not enough available employees and they were denying availability changes 🤷🏽‍♀️ we have a new manager now tho but it was aweful
lechatsombre 1 points 1y ago
They get around this by doing open closes instead
marvelmanda 41 points 1y ago
I had to literally drop out of college working for them or I would get no hours. Its ridiculous. They say they work with school schedules then give you no hours smh.
GuySmileyIncognito 33 points 1y ago
Well if you feel like collecting unemployment, if they separate you for this you should be able to collect incredibly easily and they really won't have much of an argument to fight the claim.

Also, the requirements for shifts are somewhat understandable (I personally wouldn't have worked at this store, but they aren't completely unreasonable) the requirements for baristas are laughable.
twirlylilchungis 26 points 1y ago
With the worker shortage right now, I can’t imagine they will be able to follow through with getting rid of partners just because they can’t work 3 peak shifts per week. That’s ridiculous
Internal-Ad-8820 7 points 1y ago
Yeah I'm internally cackling because why would they want to potentially screw themselves over *that* badly by saying "my way or the highway" lol
cookiemonstah87 3 points 1y ago
For real! When I was in school, I had class 5 days a week starting no later than 9 am every day. I wouldn't have been allowed to work at that store
No-Calligrapher-1482 24 points 1y ago
Run.
HopefulOverthinker 2 points 1y ago
For realllll. This would be my reason for transferring immediately. I’m so thankful my SM and ASM are SO understanding of our schedules.
leopardsocks 20 points 1y ago
This is so lazy of your manager. They just want to schedule anyone whenever and that offers no stability to employees. The only one I agree with is having one weekend day available. Weekends are hell and the store absolutely needs all hands on deck. Our manager has the same rule about availability, but that’s it.
cringeqween13 13 points 1y ago
If this is a corporate store you need to contact your DM
-Ana-- 13 points 1y ago
Doesnt go against starbs rules? People choose us for because we offer flexibility for scheduling?
PrettyFlyforaWiFi13 11 points 1y ago
How can managers set store specific rules like this? Like if it isn't in the handbook/hub it isn't a requirement of the company. I would send a pic of this to your DM and ask if this is allowed because this doesn't seem to reflect on the 3rd place environment for partners.
maddyyy13 9 points 1y ago
Don’t change your availability. And don’t let them bully you into quitting or transferring. Let them fire you so you can collect unemployment
jams1015 9 points 1y ago
Goddamn! By the time your peak starts, ours has been over by an hour, lol.

if i worked at ur store i’d be gone bc i’m a minor 😭
Brief_Coat6526 6 points 1y ago
I get the whole business needs aspect but one of the best parts of bucks was flexible schedules. Sure you might get low hours but whatever you can always pick up shifts else where. Not the same place it was when I started way back when that’s for sure.
TheHiddenKee 5 points 1y ago
i'm lucky enough to have weekend availability during the weekends as a college student, but many of my coworkers don't have that availability much less the option to work during peak during the week. it might be manageable for a few people but expecting everyone to adjust their schedules to meet these requirements feels absurd.
Abject_Membership_28 4 points 1y ago
“We need more coverage, but if you can’t meet all of our requirements, we’re transferring you so we then have even less coverage.” Okay sister.
Angryturtle0009 3 points 1y ago
As an SM, I would never. The only thing I say to my partners is their availability reflects their hours. So if they have 15 hours of availability, then they can’t expect me to schedule them more than that. This is ridiculous and needs to be reported. They’re punishing the partners for having a life/responsibilities outside of work, which Starbucks preaches to. Get them out of there.
RexxyDino 3 points 1y ago
I think its fair for leaders not for baristas. I get the weekend availability thing but not the ability to cover 3 morning peaks. Plenty of school kids can only do evenings and that's okay.
Stink_Fish_Pot 3 points 1y ago
Union stores don't deal with this kind of crap. Just sayin'.
aee78 3 points 1y ago
Not sure I would say it's fair or unfair, but kind of delusional since most of the staff are college students. So basically you need to take all your classes on Tuesdays and Thursday? I don't understand how they expect college kids to be avaible 3-4 days during the middle of the school day.

If you transfer out for the summer, maybe ask about only being a borrowed partner for the school year. That way you can just pick up shifts or only be scheduled 1-2 days.
No_Sprinkles_2583 3 points 1y ago
at my old store this was a pretty regular requirement of everyone except the partners directly related to the manager (ie comadre and cousins, half son)
ElijahLordoftheWoods 2 points 1y ago
Absolutely not. How the hell are any of you supposed to actually go to college with these kinds of requirements?
AuctionPicker 2 points 1y ago
guess theirs no high school kids working there.
Notlikeothercatmoms 2 points 1y ago
I worked at a university Starbucks and there was absolutely no way I could do this. I only worked closing because I literally had classes during peak everyday??
Tyd4ee 2 points 1y ago
Just. Hire. More. People. Good god, it's like bux is allergic to making stuff easier.
Immediate_Anteater_2 2 points 1y ago
Lol this is a requirement for a store on a college campus???? Y’all need to get up on outta there
tricializ1 2 points 1y ago
It’s unbelievable what they want to demand from partners and then be dragged kicking and screaming to higher wages. They pose as offering so many benefits, but with hours cut, people will lose them or scramble to stay at the 20 hour minimum.
altboyfriend 2 points 1y ago
this manager needs to be reported, definitely to the DM, maybe to ethics & compliance?

even my managers who are the most “by the book” have never required me to work a specific number of days or day parts, even as a shift.

if you need more availability to meet business needs but your current partners can’t meet those needs, how is getting rid of your entire staff gonna fix that problem? it’s the same kind of nonsense that they’re pulling by cutting our labor hours despite record breaking sales.
trentablondelatte 2 points 1y ago
immediately transfer
Accomplished_Kiwi211 2 points 1y ago
This is absolutely ridiculous. They’re saying all the shifts HAVE to work 6 days a week, within the hours they assign to them?? I’ve never seen anything like this before

Edit: Like what if you have regular appointments, or god forbid, anything else outside of work??? Peak 4 times a week plus two opening and two closings? Good luck managing a healthy sleep schedule or finding time to take care of yourself at all with that wreck
k8mitchy 2 points 1y ago
Clearly the word “availability” does not have the definition it should anymore bahahah
madisonla 2 points 1y ago
Lmao take that transfer option and run as fast as you can
boib232 2 points 1y ago
Definitely report this to HR, this is ridiculous.
uwumoment 2 points 1y ago
no
banditoburrit0 2 points 1y ago
I've never opened in my life and if my manager asked me to I'd laugh in her face. 💖
death2capitalism2 2 points 1y ago
enuff of the bullshit. UNIONIZE 🤷🏽‍♀️
andyboy232 2 points 1y ago
My old manager wanted everyone to work at least one weekend day so that one makes sense but the rest is a lot to ask of your baristas.
fookyall 2 points 1y ago
See that drives me insane. How are you gonna tell someone how many days they’re gonna work? Like require a minimum like that. I work two days a week because I have two jobs. Unfortunately in this economy, if I want to have a life outside of JUST paying bills then I pick up extra income from Starbucks. And I work my ass off those two days and if that’s not good enough then why do they act like I can’t just go next door and get the exact same job at the exact same pay rate? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Puzzleheaded_Lie706 1 points 1y ago
Is this just your store?
ryguy69666 1 points 1y ago
Is it a license or corporate store?
the1noir 1 points 1y ago
This isn’t a corporate store so they can require whatever they want lol.
Crazyyy.
iamrayamichelle 1 points 1y ago
nope absolutely not - i would be out
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
No this is not company wide
W33dprinxess 1 points 1y ago
I worked for my campus sb and it had NOTHING like this. We were protected under the food/dining/hospitality HR department regarding anything. We had our designated shifts that were the exact same every week and they only made us work one shift every other weekend. This is bullshit and you should consider transferring out to another store or a different company
angora44 1 points 1y ago
Uhhh that is absolutely fucked up. My management literally tells college and hs kids that their new availability with their ever changing schedules will be honored so long as they let her know with three weeks notice. She sends that out way before any semesters end…. This is not okay
4filth 1 points 1y ago
chile…
MattyScrant 0 points 1y ago
It’s fair to me.

Why? Because it’s unfair that I have to draw the short end of the stick with the shifts I’m scheduled. Out of the five shifts at my store (myself included) I’m the only one with an open availability. We had a sixth shift that also had an open availability but she was separated recently. Everyone else, with the exception of myself and one other person can only work in the mornings.

Because of the sixth SSV being let go, every single shift I have worked for the last three weeks have been nothing but closes. It’s tiring. My SM knows this thankfully and has implemented a similar policy with supervisors.

On the barista end I can kind of agree with it but at the same time, no. I worked in a college Starbucks just off campus from the university in my hometown and speaking from experience, having something like that for baristas who are in school full-time doesn’t seem feasible. Depending on the staffing, it seems kind of unnecessary.
persona-2 -2 points 1y ago
Fair or not it’s within the rights of your manager to do this. Your SM needs people for these times. The options are either current partners open availability or they hire more people. This really doesn’t seem like the right way to go about this though.
tbb10 -1 points 1y ago
This isn’t unreasonable. It’s not saying you need to work this amount of days it says you need to be available for this many days/ time periods. Most jobs have requirements like this.

Also someone said union stores don’t deal with this. But every union job I’ve had has been worse and it’s usually just union contracts that are trying to get people more hours backfiring.

My union place right now has a minimum of 24 hours scheduled. And we have people quitting because they want to work less and have to call out all the time.

Mx0rion 20 points 1y ago
the problem comes with starbucks as a company advertising flexibility with scheduling everywhere they advertise hiring and then this specific store going against that after these partners have already been hired. if their availability wasn't right for the store then they shouldn't have been hired initially. Now, these people who work here are going to essentially be fired (invited to separate from the company lmao) even though they themselves have changed nothing and have done nothing wrong because their store manager decided to pull this, not the company. So no, it's not really reasonable. Especially for a college store, when starbucks blatantly promotes going to school while working there and this SM is basically telling them fuck their availability that was likely working around class schedules because you NEED to be open to COVER shifts that you weren't even scheduled for at least half a week so you're going to have to suck it up and skip your classes for us and suffer the consequences. Completely goes against what starbucks is standing for, promoting, and encouraging and as somebody who also has worked a variety of jobs it's really shitty to accept somebody's availability when they are hired and then completely throw it out the window
