Question about SSV availability (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iStealSharpies
Just want to confirm if this is true… are shifts REQUIRED to do 5 days minimum? Are they also REQUIRED to do both opening and closing and have as open availability possible? Just asking to confirm.

I am a mid shift that works 4 days a week. I do the odd close shift maybe once every 3 months, but that's it. It depends on your stores needs, but there is no official thing about it from a corporate level.

What time range is a mid shifts shift? I didn't even know these existed until about 3 days ago. Is it like 11-7ish? My store only has open/close.

My typical shift it 8 to 4:30. My store is open 5 am to 9 pm, and I'm there to keep everything running smoothly from the opening shift to the closing shift. It's nice to have a second shift on the floor in case of emergencies as well.

Oh, wow, I wish we had that! One thing that has kept me from trying to advance is knowing how stressed shifts get about finding coverage when they need it. We only have 3-4 shifts on average at my store. I'd love to have mids.

I’m asking because when I first became a shift, my SM said I can’t Only do opens, and now in august I will be starting school and I wanted to ask if I could do 4 days instead of 5 & she flat out said no, I need to have 5 days and as open availability as possible. Honestly I have a second job at another coffee shop that pays me better & I’m truly considering just quitting if my SM can’t accommodate for me, but I love Starbucks so much…

See if you can transfer to a store that will accommodate your availability

Dont tell them you work at another coffee shop you'll be fired.

Honestly at this point, they can fire me. This other cafe has digital tips & let me tell ya, I work half the time I work at Starbucks and only make 100 dollars less than what I make at Starbucks. I can’t imagine if I put all my time into this place..

Yea what the other commenter said. See if u can transfer to a store that will accommodate ur availability. Theres a main shift at my store who opens monday thru friday and she either works 5 to 10:45 or 5 to 12. She doesnt work weekends and doesnt close. She just opens monday thru friday and shes the only shift at my store that does opens. Theres one shift who only works like 3 or 4 days a week closing cuz of college. Theres other shifts at my store who only do mornings/mid.

It’s based on store needs. We have shifts who only open and some who only close, and some who mix it up. Theoretically you could have a shift who works once a week if that’s what the store needed

Im 3 days, 20 hours. If my store couldn’t accommodate those days or need me those days, id be out.
Comfortable-Plane944 3 points 1y ago
I have shifts that are there less than five. I will say though all are required to do at least one close a month
StrawberryAlarmclck 3 points 1y ago
I think that depends on rhe store. We have a shift that only opens.
My SM told me shifts have to have 30 hours of availability and work 20
No-Pearl000 2 points 1y ago
this is definitely not true for all stores
violaaesthetic 2 points 1y ago
I’ve been a SSV for over a year and have never once closed a store. I’m not available past 4pm on any day
BreadfruitStrong9006 2 points 1y ago
i know for sure that i do not have open availability and e finitely do not have more than 30 open hours. i do also know that shifts have to be scheduled for 5 hours minimum. it would make sense that everything else depends on store and how many partners they have, etc.

I was about to ask a similar question because I'm thinking of applying to be a shift. I was hoping to keep my one weekend day off (I can work the other two days). I was hired as a mid, and that's all I've done for the last few years since being hired.
