Is it normal for on person to be all bar the whole shift??(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Snootels
So I have been working at Starbucks for almost 2 years now. When I first started there was always two people on bar for morning and night shift. Normally, I am a morning shift but everyone on night shift started quitting; naturally I got put on nights. Out of the blue, in the play build, they were only put one person of bar for every mid and night shift but not mornings (we have our peek in the morning). Since, I am the fast on bar for mid and night shifts I get put on it by myself a lot (normally for 6-8 hrs). I brought this up to my store manager and she told me that it’s part of my job as a barista and what I signed up for. I am just wondering if any of y’all have experience this at all?? (Sorry for any miss spelling or incorrect punctuation very upset when I wrote)

I'm not 100% certain, but I feel like in my SSV training, there was mention about cycling positions so that baristas don't get burnout. At the very least, in my IPLD classes over the last several months, I know the SMs and my RM have said that it's good to shuffle baristas. Obviously, you plant your strongest oven person at the oven, bar people at the bar, etc. during peaks, but when it's slow, they encouraged us to give our baristas time at other positions.
Again, I don't know for sure off the top of my head if there is specific policy stating that you can or should be given play in other spots. Maybe reach out to your RM and see if they have any feedback? Or search the Partner Hub for any particular policies.

at my store our setup is very weird, so typically we never have anyone on cold bar, even during peak, and it’s one person on main bar doing espresso/frapps/refreshers etc for dt and one person on mobile bar helping out when they can. it is super draining, especially since 90% of our staff has only been working for 3 months or less at this point so only experienced baristas get put on bar, but my shifts are super good about rotating people around and communicating with baristas so they feel supported and comfortable in their spots. it sucks that your sm isn’t helping when you talk to them :|

I worked there for two years and I was on bar all the time because not only was that the only position I didn’t mind besides DTO, we got new hires all the time that couldn’t do cold bar, much less drive thru bar

so at my store they’re bad about switching people out, but we try to rotate positions. at night it’s a little different, it’s usually one person on bar all night, one person on drive who then ends up cleaning for the last couple hours while bar solos, and then the shift doing shift stuff/cleaning. the partners who aren’t on bar will hop in and help out occasionally, and sometimes we’ll switch if we feel like it, but we usually stick to our spots at night. that’s what works best for us though, and if you feel burnt out after being on bar for x amount of hours, speak up and ask to be moved! it’s not unreasonable to want to be on more than one position during your shift.

I have tried telling people but the problem with my store is that they keep hiring more and more people and putting them on nights. So we are left new SSV and new baristas that know almost nothing (horrible trainers that don’t train). Sometimes, I am stuck having to help coach and guide others. So, there really isn’t any other choice but to keep me on bar. I tried telling my SM to at least have one more person who knows how to close help us and said no. It also doesn’t help that we have always had trouble with night shift being mistreated for anything and everything.

It sucks even more Bc I love my job but it’s take a toll on my mental health. I feel like I am going crazy for feeling the way I do or being “too emotional” when I don’t know what else to do. I have tried changing. I have tried talking about it. I have tried helping out as much as possible. Noting seems to work. I am pushed to my limit and my SM does not care.

That’s the problem I am having with my store. All the people who know bar is on mornings and the green beans are on nights. It’s so bad that one person asked us how to mop 0-0 .

not at my store, at least. unless its peak, i believe ssvs are supposed to switch partners around somewhat frequently bc ppl can get burnt out in their position otherwise.
sometimes i solo bar for my whole shift, but i usually only work 4 hrs at a time. i like making drinks tho and i'm fast, so thats why some of my shifts put me there for so long. its pretty unusual for other partners to bar for a whole shift!

I would also like to note that my sm told me it wasn’t her fault that I wasn’t being switched around so I shouldn’t get emotional or angry when I don’t get switched out. She said that’s what I signed up for as a barista.

I tried telling sm that I get every stressed out on bar when it’s the whole shift but she told me that it was my job and that I am too emotional. I have been having problems since I started with my sm saying that I am too emotional and calling me a liar about anything. When I brought it up that I wasn’t being switched out for 8 hour shifts she called me a liar. So I quit.

that’s extremely unfair, there are so many other positions they could switch you out to. i’m sure you’re not the *only* partner at your store who is capable of keeping up on bar. i’m sorry they treated you that way, you are not being too emotional, you are just advocating for yourself.
