So I’m a new barista trainer and I train tmr for the first time, is there any tips from y’all?? Cuz to be honest I don’t feel prepared at all 💀

Just be honest with them and let them make mistakes. My trainer was very controlling and didn’t really let me learn things my way. Also, I found it nice to also get help from other partners while I was being trained.

This. Let them make mistakes, then explain what we normally do, and then explain*why* we do it that way. Share your experiences and be relatable.

Everyone I trained knows that I accidentally made frap roast with hot water for my first six months. It gets a lot of laughs, but it also lets them know we all make mistakes.

Let them know it's a LOT to remember and it's gonna take a bit, but you're there to help and build their confidence up too! Encourage questions, lots of questions.

USE THE IPAD. the entire training plan and discussion guide is on there and you can look up almost every single routine if you have questions. It tells you step by step what you should do for each position. Make sure to reference back to recipe cards if you’re unsure about drink recipes. Lastly, figure out how they learn best! There is a quiz your manager can print for you and your trainee to take if you haven’t already done that to figure out what type of learner you are. It’s a fun way to break the ice and make sure you aren’t coverage either, you should be training the entire time until their practice shifts! You got this and just have fun with it. You will learn from your mistakes!

Definitely try to figure out their prior experiences and shape your training around that. For example, most of the people I have trained have experience with cash registers/making change, so I don't spend as much time on things like window, and instead focus on areas they don't have experience. I've also found it's easier if you try to build a relationship (find out hobbies, invite them to sit with you on your lunch, etc.) so they are less nervous. Also, don't be afraid to stray from the activity guides/add to the training plan to fit your store. This is especially relevant with bar training, I always make sure to go over the layered fraps and brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso because they are really popular at my store, even though they aren't really a part of the training plan.
