Management handled my medical emergency... badly.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lat3spr1ng
299 here, a disabled partner thats been with the siren for over a year. last sunday for the first time I had a medical emergency on the clock that was so severe I had to beg my manager to call my emergency contact, then soon after 911. my manager did not do these things, in fact he waited 5 minutes after TEXTING my emergency contact that I needed life saving medication to call them, and then waited even longer to call 911.
I genuinely thought I was going to die in my store in that moment. paramedics put me on oxygen in our back room and my emergency contact arrived around the same time, but both of them could’ve been there sooner. after all of this, my manager even had the nerve to make a joke to me on my way out about me being perfectly fine.
I haven’t spoken to him about it, in fact I go back this morning, but I still can’t believe it happened. I dont know who to talk about this level of negligence to, because sit downs with him personally are notorious for going absolutely nowhere and I feel unsafe knowing this is how my management handles my disability.
thoughts? direction on where to go or what to do with this? could really use some insight from some partners outside of my store.

Definitely reach out to partner resources.

Yes! This was not an appropriate response from your manager and that he joked about it is trashy
Standard-Pin120738 points1y ago
100% reach out to PR make sure you label time frames for them. They will fully investigate him on video/audio. All facts leading to your justice. In fact You have rights within Starbucks call your regional manager and say your store manager is making you feel uncomfortable to go back to work.

Please reach out to partner resources AND your DM. This is horrible.

Start with DM (cc RM) and definitely contact partner services.
I, too, am fuming just reading your account of what happened. Did none of your co-workers step up, your shift lead??? I mean WTF were you there alone with this asshole? 🤬🤬🤬
I swear some of the SM behaviors I read about in these post are downright criminal. How the fuck are they screening/making decisions on who becomes an SM in this company?
Everyday my disillusion with this company grows and grows. 😢😔 I've given 16+ years to the siren but the last 2 have been the hardest and by far the saddest. This was once a great company, who cared about its 'partners', at least that was my experience but now it's just a greedy fast food conglomerate chipping away at the reputation it once had.

File a formal complaint about your SM and make sure this stays on his file permanently. 100% go to partner resources and your DM. This is so insanely against the Starbucks code of conduct. Don’t sit down with him personally, go to his superiors. This is unacceptable and should even be a firing offense.

With a half decent lawyer sbux would definately be liable to pay for your medical bills
Avuneon5 points1y ago
Along with additional damages. You could have died as a result of your manager's actions, and that would leave anyone with trauma, especially having to go in the next day and work under them? "Hi, boss. Made it in today, didn't have to call in dead and find coverage."
Please forgive the morbid humor.

Dude you gotta contact a lawyer first and foremost!!!
garbagecandoattitude22 points1y ago
THIS. Do not let the company know until you have your own ducks in line. The American Bar website has resources for free or low-cost law clinics, as well as live online support, for initial questions. You don’t have to hire anyone today, but at least begin the conversation before higher-ups have the chance to plan against your case.

Just a disclaimer I could totally be wrong about the lawyer thing but you can usually ask if you have a case.
Gather evidence ASAP. ESPECIALLY prioritize filling out an incident report with the EXACT details of what happened. If you have a sit down, record it on your phone, even if it's in secrecy. Get every detail possible about the situation in writing and documents. If any trust-worthy partners are on your side, have them write signed witness statements.
Refuse to have sensitive convos over phone, only text that way it is all in writing, and if he refuses to do that, record it. Personally, I would call out then text him bringing up the situation in detail (I'm feeling terrified of going back to work because of the way you handled my medical emergency. Im scared of working with you because i could have seriously died. Why didn't you call for help when i asked? Was it personal? Make sure you get it across exactly how he made you feel and question why he did it) and his reaction that way you get how he handled the situation in general in writing as well. If he punishes you or retaliates in any way, even passive aggressively, document it. Take all of this evidence to partner resources or HR/union, and OSHA.
This man does not deserve his position in the first place. If nothing happens after contacting corporate about it, talk to a lawyer and see if you have a case for personal injury. In some states you can also press charges for negligence of duty. Good luck my friend ❤️

Yes, start a paper trail
Foreign_Service310218 points1y ago
Lawyer up and talk to the DM for sure. Report that shit, maybe even to corporate.
Edit: grammar issues lol
analdelrey-11 points1y ago
Please please PLEASE call partner resources immediately and explain what happened in great detail.
Honestly I hope they fire your manager, but he will at least get in trouble.
Tell partner resources you do not feel safe in the store after this incident.
I'm so sorry this happened to you
lavendersigil11 points1y ago
What an absolute piece of shit go to your dm and partner resources as soon as you have the strength to do so
major_brd10 points1y ago

PLEASE UPDATE US I HOPE THAT MF GETS YELLED AT FOR THAT WTF IS WRONG WITH HIM i'm glad you're okay but seriously if i had the means i would fucking sue???
mushmushmushmus5 points1y ago
bro, your manager literally risked your life. contact ethics or partner resources or even your district manager. Starbucks is not wort your life
Cirsui5 points1y ago
Nah, that ain't right at all. You take care of your partners immediately. The fact they waited that long when you were obviously struggling? That straight up has me angry.
As others mentioned. Partner Resources and Your DM are your go tos. Please also contact an employment lawyer and/or the employment board. Especially if it doesn't seem your DM or PCC are going to do anything.
Also, your SM should have done an incident report, especially if 911 was called. There should be something on record about the whole thing. I don't know who all sees them besides your DM and SM, but I'm sure Partner Resources would love to hear about it.

Wow

Gosh I’m so upset !!! Because no partner or anyone should go to this and DM’s do the bare minimum as well ! Partner resources maybe .
