How late is considered late? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Latter-Guava-4734
I just want to preface this by saying I don’t think I was only late for a shift once by like 2 minutes, but no one really said anything. By the time I realized I’d be late I was already driving and really didn’t want to either pull over to call and risk being more late or talk on the phone while driving. Once again though, no one said anything and nothing really came of it. 2 minutes probably isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme, but it also just got me thinking how late too late would be. 5 minutes? 15? 30? An hour? And what the consequences would be of being late without informing the store of it. Once again I don’t dream of being late, and in fact I’m usually early. I was just curious.

technically you’re late if you’re not clocked in exactly when you’re scheduled to be, but things happen and everyone is a little late every once and a while, and you definitely don’t have anything to worry about being only 2 minutes late.

the only time it’s ever really an issue is if it happens often like every shift, or if it’s like more than 10 minutes without calling or answering a call about it !

(also depends on the shift tbh, managers usually aren’t hyper analyzing the times people clocked in so if the shift is super strict about it they could tell the sm that you were late but others might not say anything to anyone at all, or even notice lol)

This is my feelings. When I was a shift at the Bux I was already making contingency plans if they aren’t there on the dot (I dealth with a lot of severely late partners and ncns’s and even just miscommunicated schedules) and texting or calling by ten past.(Texting not technically approved, but was often easier for my partners. I’d call at like 20 if there wasn’t a respnse.) So not being there on the dot did stress me out a little, but also life happens and if it’s less than 10 minutes, not regular, and not at a super critical time, no big deal. I think most managers have about the same time guidelines unless they’re super strict or trying to fire someone and time is the excuse.

Starbucks policy is that if you are clocking in after your clock-in time, you are late. It doesn't matter if it's 10 minutes or 1 minute, you are late. Calling the store to inform them does not excuse you, either.

How closely your manager sticks to this policy is very very individual. Many of them don't make much of it until it's a habit or you're extremely late. But that's the official policy.
Which_Supermarket_52 4 points 1y ago
That's really obnoxious considering they don't want you to clock in early at all.
ABVDRICEBV 3 points 1y ago
I was always taught you can clock in up to 5 minutes early.
diphenhydranautical 3 points 1y ago
the homepage on our ipad is a letter from our manager saying our scheduled vs actual labor difference needs to be exactly at a 0 or we’ll get written up 🥲 i don’t clock in more than 2 minutes early out of fear lol
Sirmarchboy22 10 points 1y ago
The system classifies 5 mins past clock in time as late, but managers are usually lenient on that till after 20 minute mark unless you are being 6 to 8 mins late every day
ABVDRICEBV 6 points 1y ago
As an SSV I would want you to pull over and call or call before you leave if you know a head of time. The more communication the better. As an SSV I want to know you’re safe.

This! I pretty much know what time a partner will walk in for work, even the habitually late ones. So for each person I’ll base what time I will try to call/text them based on that. I always start with “it’s ___, just checking to make sure you are alright since you aren’t here for your shift”. It always makes me nervous when someone doesn’t walk through the door when I expect them too.

If you don't have your apron, name tag and ready to work before you clock in at your scheduled time to work you are late.

It's how they see it, etc.

Arrive 10 mins early so you have time to use the bathroom and grab all your stuff b4 you Clock in.

I'm chronically late for everything so I trick myself by setting all my alarms to be there 20 mins early and I normally end up in the 10-5 min window haha

I think past ten I would call /text to see where they are/ if they know they are working . Idk mistakes happen depends on your ssv and store manager and if they wanna write someone up for being a little late . I think technically your store manger can write you up for being more than 10 min late but I’m not sure if your store manager is that strict.
Roscop7391 3 points 1y ago
If you are not there ready to go at the time of clock in you are late. Your other co workers are depending on you being there ready to go when your shift starts.

If I'm going to be over 10 mins late I will call my store and give them a heads up.

As a shift I don't pester people until after 10 mins, then I'll start calling!

You should be a-okay!
Ordinary_Theory8534 2 points 1y ago
You technically have a 5 min grace period but that being said, if you are a min to 2 min late continuously and have been coached repeatedly and it’s documented, you can be separated for being a minute late or more for more than 30% of your shifts if it’s a habit. This does not seem like a habit considering you’re asking about being 2 min late and no one said anything. You’ll be okay!
Fluffybunnybadass 1 points 1y ago
sbux says 0 minutes as official late policy. in practice, depends on your manager. most of them won't (shouldn't?) mind so long as a habit isnt made out of it.
Brief_Coat6526 1 points 1y ago
Not a big deal if you don’t make it a habit

As a shift I don’t call until the 10 min mark. But I also am a night shift which means most of the other partners on my shifts are high schoolers. Traffic around the time they come in is insane cause our store is located outside of a mall, and on a main road, and most of them are new drivers so I’m pretty understanding about them being late. I’d rather them be late and take their time then something happen cause they were rushing. I can plan a little differently for a few mins.
wowitsnotem 1 points 1y ago
I was late once by 30 min(I work Night Shift at another job and none of my alarms woke me up) it was my first time and my shift called me right at my start time so I picked up and said I was literally running to leave. I’m usually there over 15 min early to all of my shifts so they were worried something had happened. But I didn’t get in trouble or written up or anything so I really think that it depends on your Shift and your SM! But I know technically you’re late if you don’t clock in right at your start time.
Broad-Flounder-4971 1 points 1y ago
I went in an hour later than my usual starting time and the difference in traffic where I was at was insane. So I was ten min late. I couldn’t call because I was driving and will not even touch my phone while driving, but when I rushed in and found my shift to apologize, she was like “oh it’s fine, yeah traffic out there ramps up after x o’clock” so that was cool. But I was told anything after 5 min is actually late. I don’t think I’ve ever clocked in at exactly 4:30 even though I get there a few minutes before because I always have to wait for a shift to open.
medusas-garden 1 points 1y ago
From a shift perspective I’m starting to take notice at 5 minutes. If it’s a repetitive issue that’s another thing but it it’s just one instance it’s fine. If you’re 10 minutes late I’ll call and see what’s up. I’d rather you call the store to let me know you’re gonna be late by x amount of time so I know you’re coming and I don’t have to step off the floor to find your phone number and call you.
HamburgIar_ 1 points 1y ago
You show up on a report if you are more than 5 min late
Which_Supermarket_52 1 points 1y ago
Oh really! That's good to know. I would like to do that nowadays anyway considering that the covid partner check takes a couple of minutes.
