Daily Records Book (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by philosopher_cat_lady
So I'm new to a licensed store, and we have a Daily Records Book. (We didn't have one at the previous licensed store I worked at for some reason.) I was going through the book for some reason when I came across sticky notes on a previous day from this week. Whoever wrote them really wanted me to read them or ran out of room. Anyway, I found the comments written there ridiculous and mean. Here are a couple examples of them (these comments are from the AM of that day when I had closed by myself the previous night):

"Literally everything in the store is covered in coffee, syrup, and water spots."
"Coffee urn not really jammed." (I had written in the book the night before that the coffee urn was jammed shut to explain why I couldn't clean it)

This is out of character for me, but perhaps because I've worked at Starbucks so long and am at this point tired of being treated disrespectfully by my coworkers, especially after I had to quit my first Starbucks position after being bullied by one for a year, I responded. I wrote: "Really can't prevent water spots. Coffee urn really was jammed, I'm not lying, I tried to open it and couldn't." Anyway, I'm now aware that this is a team with an environment of being mean to each other, just like I had to deal with at the other two Starbucks' I worked at, so whatever. I can't control other people. But I'm not going to write passive aggressive notes to my coworkers again. I guess I just wanted to communicate that I'm not willing to accept their bossiness. They don't know better than me. (I bet you anything I've worked at Starbucks longer than they have. I'm at 2 1/2 years now.) Water spots? Those occur because we're supposed to let the sanitizing solution air dry. They obviously didn't pay any attention while doing their training modules.

Anyway, I guess the point of this post is to ask: how do y'all deal with passive aggression in the Daily Records Book? Like, I'm sorry, there's a way to write comments \*in a respectful manner\*. Not to mention that it's unfair and unhelpful to blame your coworkers for not having enough time to do everything! Blame the goddamn company for being understaffed! I mean, at this point I'm loath to even read further comments they write. The only comments I have to truly care about are the ones that come from my supervisor.

Our DM reads over our DRB so??? I wouldn’t dare write that kind of stuff in there! Not even by sticky note. They either got balls or you have a DM that does not care.

That being said, this kind of behavior doesn’t fly in my store. If they cannot communicate to you directly then they are looking to complain, not looking for solutions. They want drama, not progress.

I'm sure my DM rarely visits my store or communicates with it. Like I said, I just started at my store, but at my previous licensed store, I worked there for over three months and my DM visited one time and it was to take a look at an espresso machine that wasn't working correctly.

I ignore it till the person says something to me in which we will talk it out or take it to the SM. most of the time, we've compromised and buried the hatchet but I never understood why the person (which is the same person and everyone doesn't like her because she does this to everyone) continues to pick fights where there isn't. luckily she is talking about leaving and I hope it's soon.

Don't take that kind of negative energy. Let your SM know you will not tolerate being communicated to in such a manner. Let them sort the tone for your store by showing how to coach with integrity and respect.

I'm done with that book. First, the other day someone wrote: "\[my name\] please start mopping the floor at night!" I responded: "\[the name of the guy who takes out the trash\] mopped the floor Sunday night. I watched him do it." Then today my supervisor fussed at me for writing: "Ice bin dirty--cleaned it, this should be done once a week." He said I needed to stop writing things in the book that were "incriminating." I had previously written: "Had to close the store for thirty minutes to take a lunch break" and "\[name\] was ten minutes late without notice, causing \[my name\] to work over six hours without a lunch" (in my state, this is illegal). He whited out both of those messages. Regarding the ice bin: it was filthy. Black mold and mildew. Green slime on the bottom. I ran out of time and out of elbow grease cleaning it and left its pieces in the dishwashing sink at the end of my shift. My coworker must have complained to him about leaving a sink full of dirty dishes or something because he fussed at me about that and he fussed at me for not communicating with my coworker verbally at the end of my shift when I wanted to simply clock out because I had again worked over six hours without a lunch break because she was ten minutes late with no notice.

I'm done reading the book and I'm done writing in it.

Sounds like a management problem, reach out to your DM, and Partner Contact Center for further guidance.

Oh, I already quit. It was a licensed store. My DM never visited and I didn't know her contact information
