Advice on starbucks availability?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Potato3344
Hi, I am new to starbucks and it would be my 2nd job so my experience on handling situations I think is a little lacking. I am a college student and was upfront that my availability will vary throughout the year and I was hired about a little over a month ago. When hired I told them my schedule was open except for the 2 days I had class and even then I was willing to work after class. So I have not had a set schedule, but I noticed I have been scheduled mostly for 5:30am shifts to whenever. My summer classes begin late July and will only be 8 weeks long. I submitted a new availability at work and had it denied. Im unsure of what to do because the classes I need are always slim to none and this class I have is the only one available to me. I figured its May and telling my employer nearly 2 months in advance would be enough time. Im unsure of how to approach my manager about this and would like some advice. School is a priority for me and I hope things work out because its only been a month and so far Starbucks as been a much more professional job than my last where work conditions felt unsafe.
For context my class is a science Nursing prereq and it would be mon - thursday 8 am - 1:15pm. I was pretty much open to working anytime other than that, but I know those are big chunks of the day. I had left weekends open and was willing to work after class weekdays, but other than that im not sure what else I can do to work with business needs. I need time to study for class as well...

Ask your SM. Expressing its temporary and for shock should help. Also letting them know if it means a temporary decrease in hours that’s okay.
If they still say no stating asking near by store managers if they need a closer with weekend availability. You will find someone who can take your availability.

Change your availability to only the hours you are willing to work, even if it’s just the weekends to give you time to do what needs to be done during the week for school. The SM can deal.

I wanted to do that, but I already left fri - sun completely open and they denied it. How would I work around it being denied?

Connect with your manager and ask why it was denied. They technically can deny your availability if it doesn’t meet the needs of the business and can potentially lead to separation if you don’t have the hours they need at that time. I would just ask your manager and be open to their feedback! I wouldn’t see it being an issue considering you’re open for weekends and after class but they would be looking for morning availability.

They told me through text it was denied and due to "business needs." I asked if there was any alternative schedule, but they said they wanted to talk in person and wouldnt reply about it over text... I wont see them for almost a week though so ive been anxious about it. I want to work with them because I know how hard it is to be understaffed and id never want to leave coworkers alone during rushes, but im feeling a bit overworked and its only been a month. Im still pretty new to starbucks and ive picked up a ton of 5am shifts last min when they texted me around 8pm... Theyve schedule me for closing and then opening shifts too. I know I left a fairly open schedule, but I feel really tossed around. Imo the least they can do is work with my school schedule especially since im letting them know 2 months ahead...

They have hired 4 new people since ive started and in total I believe theres around 19 employees working (including shift leads) so im not sure how business needs are that dire that they cant work with my schedule especially since ive left fri - sun completely open.... and even offered to work on days I have class. At this point I wont have time to study or do assignments and if they dont accept my schedule I wont be able to take the class at all since it it literally the only class available for the subject.
