unionizing - benefits put on pause? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by DeathFactor15
We just recently had a store meeting to talk about unionizing stores and to "get to know the facts". The district manager told my store manager to have one to discuss the current events. My manager started off by listing all the benefits we, as partners, have received since the beginning and the new ones to come later this year. My manager asked questions such as why do you think baristas want to unionize, and if we knew what percentage of the store would have to vote yes to turn into a union store.
What I'm more curious about was my manager mentioned that if even a single person signs a form saying they are possibly interested in unionizing, the whole store in turn becomes a store in the process of unionizing. From the outcome of the store becoming that, all baristas current benefits such as health coverage, dental, vision, daily food and drink mark outs, etc all get paused. The reason the manager said is because it is up to the union to represent us and negotiate the benefits we receive. To my understanding I thought you don't lose any benefits for unionizing by law as it's considered retaliation, We were told that the benefits get put on pause because we are hourly employees and that only applies to salary workers. Is that true? 0r was my manager telling lies that the district manager told them to say? Is this scare tactics or actual facts?

How they should be explaining it is that if Starbucks adds any new benefits while your store is in the process of unionizing you won’t get those. You still get all the normal benefits you had before and they won’t change. You can’t add any more benefits once a store is unionizing until contract negotiations. That’s when you can negotiate to get the new benefits or different benefits. Your store is in a freeze for anything new coming in.

Until companies are actually punished for illegal union busting behavior, Starbucks is going to continue to do them and break countless laws. Think about it this way, if unions are actually going to end up with less benefits for workers, why is Starbucks spending so many millions of dollars to fight them? According to what Starbucks is saying, unions would be cheaper for them because they won't have to give labor as much money/benefits.

Sounds like scare tactics. I’d ignore it and keep pushing to unionize.

Sounds like? So, you don't actually know?

A week of strike would cost them more in lost profits and products than the benefits would cost them.

I was a manger about 20 years ago during another unionization push. I went to the same meetings, fed the same lies.

Starbucks is very anti-union and is fighting HARD to ensure partners think unions are the bad guys and will make things worse.

If they temporarily took away benefits just because one person wanted to pursue unionization or started the process, that is all kinds of illegal. By law, there is no retaliation allowed for pursuing unionization. That doesn’t mean they won’t try.

There is a store up here in Bellingham that I frequent that has started the process. It’s “Iowa & King st”. Find their contact info and ask them directly how things are going for them. They all seem extremely excited.

Good luck!

Things change in 20 years.

Doesn’t seem like it.

Those are lies. Also I don’t think it’s just one person that has to sign. At least I’m my state, you need a certain percentage of the store who wants to go forward with the election. I wonder if they said it’s only one person to quickly cut them out…

union-busting scare tactics at their finest

Those are weak anti-union scare tactics. The idea that we won't get future benefits is a weak threat, and Starbucks would have a difficult time legally denying benefits and pay increases to specifically unionized workers.

As far as losing current benefits: the only way that could happen is if your store votes on and agrees to a new contract that gets rid of said benefits. Why on earth would anyone do that?

Your manager is basically required to be anti union. That is a part of their job right now. They will say what they are told to say, and Starbucks, being a greedy corporation, will do/say whatever to prevent them from having to do right by us.

If any new benefits are added they wont be to your store this is a tactic they use to try and starve out the unions like they did in the past if you see everyone else short term getting things you want you will jump ship never speak to management about unions let the reps do that

The pain is temporary the power gained forever and power is money. That’s why you eat ramen after having been on your feet all day and the execs eat something else

She’s right , you now have to negotiate your benefits with your union worker and they will talk with Starbucks.
