please please PLEASE read the cups(self.starbucksbaristas)

yall milk alternatives are no joke. i know it can be annoying when people order a drink with a bunch of mods, but putting the wrong milk could literally kill someone. i normally make my own drinks at work and dont usually order drinks w milk off the clock, but yesterday i did and luckily i could taste the difference. if you catch yourself using the wrong milk, yeah its annoying, but please just remake it.
"Theyre supposed to tell us if they have an allergy do idc if they dont tell me" people forget and its better to be safe than sorry
Edit: im a dramatic person (referring to deadly allergens), but just read the damn label
KiwiBeginning4137 points1y ago
starbucks doesnt promise anything to be allergen free and such. the steam wands are all submerged in every milk and theres splatters everywhere. if someone is that much at risk of death i wouldnt even step foot in a starbucks
caulicarter67 points1y ago
Fr. I saw a post were someone said just a bit more/less caffeine in their coffee would kill them. Like the machine might not pull the shot right an extra shot might be accidentally pulled if you’re THAT sensitive to something that is not the responsibility of a random teenage barista of course I wanna make your drink right but if it’s that dangerous for you don’t risk it it’s not the responsibility of other people
hoewenn34 points1y ago
Yeahh I agree if you have a deadly allergy, don’t go to fast food at all cause 9/10 times they don’t care. But it can suck ordering a milk alternative and then you get home and have massive diarrhea or something like that, so it’s better to be safe tbh
canidieyet_21 points1y ago
honestly even if they do care, it’s impossible to avoid cross contamination 100% (unless you completely halt business and deep clean everything—but that’s a lengthy process nobody wants to wait for)
echowolf97 points1y ago
Asking to avoid cross contamination and wanting to receive the correct milk are completely different things.
canidieyet_3 points1y ago
Obviously. I’m talking about people who are deathly allergic (NOT intolerant) to dairy and ask that there’s 0% of cross contamination.
hoewenn5 points1y ago
True but most people who will get diarrhea from milk rather than die probably won’t be effected by slight cross contamination. More often than not its just a few oz of milk that’ll hurt, like an entire drink for example
canidieyet_7 points1y ago
They can be. I have coworker who *will* immediately be on the toilet if she drinks even one ounce of dairy (not that it stops her 💀)
icedmatchachai113 points1y ago
dude theres this one starbucks that makes NOTHING to standard and they honestly suck so much i sat there and watched them use whole milk for my chai when i asked for it with oatmilk and i sent it back immediately letting them know i watched it be made with whole milk and they were like uhhhh let me read the ticket and make sure....it says oatmilk it was made with oatmilk and i didnt want to be an annoying customer but i was like no it wasnt i stood here and watched them use whole milk i work at starbucks ik oatmilk doesnt come out of gallon with a red top if you could please remake it thank you BUT IT TOOK SO LONG
geogrokat [OP]87 points1y ago
Its not even supposed to be made with whole milk regularly, its 2%! Like if you aren't willing to at least do the bare minimum of the job, don't work there. People pay so much for these drinks 😭
Edit: then again, they could have shitty trainers/management. if i did that my shifts, and probably other baristas, would correct me so fast
Torirock1040 points1y ago
might’ve misheard oatmilk as whole milk but it’s ONNN THE STICKKERR
canidieyet_32 points1y ago
honestly when i first started i was making iced chais with half water and espresso (hot ones w espresso too). because i was told “*all* chais get half milk/half water. and all lattes get espresso” and apparently took that to heart.
i sincerely apologize to everyone who was given iced, watered down chais with espresso.
FfierceLaw6 points1y ago
That would be enough for me to never go to another Starbucks other than one where I work, ever again. Why do you want to put yourself through that again? I wouldn’t
uwumoment1 points1y ago
yeah it’s why i only go to mine in the first place other stores can be super mean too
adventurelyfe53 points1y ago
Tbh if I was that allergic to milk I wouldn’t not be going to Starbucks- especially after working there. Too much of a chance for cross contamination.
Torirock1013 points1y ago
but yea idk why they would go if it could KILL THEM and not tell someone 😭

Torirock10-25 points1y ago
not if they clean their steam wands n shit correctly
adventurelyfe9 points1y ago
Ok but I wouldn’t risk my life, like op states, assuming someone cleaned something, and shit, correctly. That’s the point.

Are we supposed to take the wand apart between drinks?
happybowlita8323 points1y ago
The first sbux I started at had a SM that was very strict about standards. They were big on standard and would make us remake iced coffees if the cream wasn't put between the 2nd and 3rd line. Its a habit I'm glad i got into why waste time finishing a drink or handing off a drink you'll know you have to remake instead of just restarting it asap and avoiding the whole "this was made wrong" interaction. I have no allergies or milk issues but always make sure I listen or look out for non dairies for this reason even when I'm on DTO or window if I can tell a drink was made with the wrong milk i give it back to the person on bar to be remade.
canidieyet_14 points1y ago
my first SM was strict on standards too. and i’m SO thankful she was. i transferred stores in september and it was pretty obvious they don’t care a bit about drink accuracy bc their sm literally just didn’t care. i’ve seen people blatantly use the wrong espresso, wrong milk, something with lemonade instead of water, etc and just be like “oh well they won’t even notice”…we’ve gotten a new SM since then and she’s very on top of drink standards which makes me happy. i was tired of coaching every five seconds
Additional_Shoe11 points1y ago
I.... what? Cream between the second and third line on iced coffees??? Are you telling me just topping with a small splash of cream after the ice isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing???
CoffeeWMyCat4 points1y ago
only sweet cream cold brew gets the splash on top. all other cold brews and iced coffees get cold brew/coffee to second line, milk/cream to third line, topped with ice. cold brew/coffee slightly above second line if they ask for light cream, sightly below if they ask for extra :)
Fluffybunnybadass1 points1y ago
they changed this recently on the recipe cards so the sweet cream now goes between the 2-3 lines. but the photo they used is still from before, when it was poured on top 🙃
Additional_Shoe1 points1y ago
Oh my god 😬
poopylilbutt1 points1y ago
I hope this is sarcasm lol
Additional_Shoe1 points1y ago
I don’t think anyone at my store does it like the standard I’m seeing here is?? Are we just the bad Starbucks everyone talks about 😭 😭
poopylilbutt1 points1y ago
lol maybe your store just needs some better training?
No-Chocolate-682823 points1y ago
If the wrong milk can kill you should you really be going to Starbucks? Lol 😂
icedmatchachai7 points1y ago
alt. milks dont come into contact with dairy milks unless theyve spilled on the counter no one should ever worry if the correct milk was used :) i understand cross contamination happens and it would be more of an issue for hot drinks especially with our steam wands, but if its ice, i dont think theres cross contamination
miniinovaa7 points1y ago
The steaming pitchers and blenders are considered cross contamination I believe.
Edit: but I agree with you, just adding my 2 cents
icedmatchachai2 points1y ago
We have customers who come in and request new and clean tongs for food items since they dont want the cross contamination with meat. if a customer specifically told me they were allergic, id try to grab a new pitcher from the back or a new blender but then again, this is something the customer must make aware

I mean, I try my best to be accurate, but if it is that severe an allergy, you may want to state it when ordering so they can be extra vigilant. I doubt any baristas actively want to hurt customers. It’s just such a fast paced environment with not enough time or grace for perfection.

1) If getting the wrong milk could "literally kill someone", then that person should really not be getting their drinks from a high-volume chain where nothing is deep cleaned between drinks. Between cross contamination and mistakes made where the company pushes super hard on short turn around times, I would presume the risk is completely not worth it. 2) If someone has an allergy that could kill them, I should think it would be important enough to not forget to mention. That feels like it should be taken just a little seriously where it's something you just do not forget to mention. 3) While it would be ideal that everyone is just very cognizant of, and concerned for others, that is unfortunately not the world we live in. Yes, it's not right, and yes, it should not have to be something people with these allergies just need to adapt to. But again, that is not the reality of the situation.
Having said all that, I am very personally vested in making sure all our drinks are sent out correctly. That standards are followed. Whether there is a health reason or not, I want all my drinks, and that of the baristas I supervise, to be made as ordered. But this post just comes off as a little unrealistic. The baristas should be making sure drinks are made properly. But on the same note, if a customer is THAT badly allergic to the wrong ingredient, then a good bit of responsibility falls on them, as well. At the least, stressing how bad the allergy is. At best, just avoiding a situation where life-threatening mistakes can be made.
BookDragon19964 points1y ago
So technically we can’t promise anything to be completely dairy free or what have you. However I do agree they should be double checking the ticket. In fact I will triple check the ticket if it’s a heavily modified drink especially for regulars who are ridiculously picky. It’s one of the major reasons why I get annoyed at customers for adding crap on after the ticket has printed because I go basically only off the ticket. Yes if it’s a little bit slower I can remember it but I shouldn’t have to. That’s the point of the ticket system and having a modification heavy POS system. I get that we’re human and forget to add something at the register but don’t get mad at me if I forget to put it on/in.
BookDragon19961 points1y ago
Also they are not required to tell us if it’s an allergen. Would it be helpful sure but ultimately should not change how we make the drink.
persona-22 points1y ago
I will always make it however the customer asks, but 99% of the “it could literally kill me” customers order drinks with other dairy components.
White mocha sub oatmilk no whip still has dairy.
Caramel macchiato sub almond milk still has dairy.
I will let people know and get “oh that’s fine” anyway.
Have_Donut2 points1y ago
Same goes for Sugar Free.
museopoly1 points1y ago
I agree with this. I have endometriosis and have to be very careful about what I get to drink. I love Starbucks drinks because I was a barista there too and like to treat myself once a month to do. I'm always so worried that someone will end up putting sweetener in there by accident or the wrong milk. I order any size I get to only have a pump of the sweetener because too much artifical sugar in one day and the wrong milk will leave me with a seriously bloated stomach and looking like I'm pregnant 🤰

I know I would be effing annoying…. What milk ? And if we ever put nuts on something …. Are you allergic to nuts?
geogrokat [OP]2 points1y ago
That's smart tho because some things have nuts on/in them that don't say, like the pumpkin loaf.
