I want real feedback from real employees (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by stickythighedbitch
I’ve recently landed job offers from Walmart (12/hr, entry position) and Starbucks (15/hr, shift lead).

The Walmart job would definitely be a change of pace for me and give me a change to relax after having been at my current, hair pulling job of two years.

On the other hand the Starbucks is willing to pay more, obviously. Is it difficult? I understand it’s a job, y’know, but does it give you grey hairs? This particular one is placed inside of a Harris Teeter. Would the business depend on the rush hours of the main store?

I’m at a loss :D

I’ve been with Starbucks for over a year now. Depending on the store it can be a fun environment, however it’s not a job for the weak minded. This is not an entry level job. Especially if you are trying to apply as a shift lead, you gotta be strong willed and able to cut the bullshit and get shit done with or without your team. I’d just go to the store you’re applying for and ask a barista their honest opinion on working there. That’ll tell you a lot of what you wanna know before making a decision.

As a 24 year partner I completely agree with this⬆️! Have there been bad times, crappy managers, and shitty partners? Absolutely! As well as incredible partners, amazing managers, and the best time ever working a job.

Wow, 24 years! Congrats!! What are your first three digits? I started in fall of 2015 and I’m 217xxxx.

Thank you!! I’m six digits that start with 272xxx. I started in 1998. When I started they had just begun “learning journey” as a structured training. I’ve seen us transition from manual espresso machines with separate grinders (and I do miss tamping portafilters to affect the outcome of a shot but I can’t imagine handling the volume of drinks we do with the old La Marzoccas) to Mastrena I and now Mastrena 2s. It’s been a wild ride that I still love.

So cool! I’ve always wanted to learn to do the whole process from grinding the beans, tamping and pulling the shots. I really enjoy watching videos on YouTube of different baristas who work on bars like that. How fun!!

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT go to Walmart or any affiliated businesses (ie Sams club). The pay seems good but I promise you they treat their employees like hot garbage. Worst year of my life then I got let go for going to Passover instead of closing when they knew and gave my brother off but denied my request. They care about the bottom line, nothing and no one else matters. Your just a warm body at Walmart.

I used to work at wally world and I'm currently employed with Starbucks so I feel like this questions is perfect for me haha!

The majority of walmarts are understaffed. Most walmarts need something like 120+ employees to actually be properly staffed, I have yet to see a fully staffed walmart. Before your training in your selected area/department is even finish, you will likely be pulled to ANYWHERE the Team Leads need you to be. For example, I was on CAP team for a year and for about 6 months of that time I was actually working in the Fresh area.

The problem with this is that they do NOT train you for the areas they pull you to. I ended up actually just saying F it and transferred over to the Fresh area after a year because I wanted to receive proper training for it.

We never had time to clean properly as we only had 1 opener in produce and 1 in meat most of the time, so then when something disgusting was found on the salefloor, people in other departments would gossip about us like we're incompetent. It's not easy breaking down 4 pallets of HEAVY meat as a 5'1" 110 girl at 4am and then having to stock the floor and then being expected to help customers and keep everything fully stocked during a rush and still trying to find time to clean that disgusting chicken goop that's all underneath the chicken section of the meat wall.

My Fresh Team Lead was often pulled to do holiday related stocking as well so I barely got to ask her to walkie for help.

I also got paid more than a coworker who had been there for 10 years, I found out by discussing our pay together. I was shocked. I asked him why he bothered staying, he was an older, mostly grumpy guy and I think he just didn't feel like he knew how to do anything else at this point.

TL;DR I am a LOT happier at Starbucks. My current manager is a blessing and she treats all her partners like her children. We are lucky enough to not be short staffed as well.
