why pay us more money when they can just give cars away to anyone who’s not an employee?(i.redd.it)

It’s US law. You legally can’t win. The money for it is coming from their marketing budget which wouldn’t be used for salaries anyway. With that said, however, I absolutely believe baristas should be paid more.

oh yeah, i understand. i’m definitely not interested in winning a car, i’m just blown away that this is within their budget. they should offer us prizes on par with these for filling out the surveys they keep begging us baristas to fill out.

I absolutely agree!

The marketing budget was chosen, it's not a meaningful distinction of where the funds come from when they still ultimately all come from one pool.

Ahhh, I didn’t know that- I thought it was like most major companies (Microsoft, Hilton, etc.) where there is a separate marketing budget from the personnel budget. Promotional/marketing budgets are taxed differently in corporate tax filings.

No, I'm saying the choice to fund the marketing budget to allow for this kind of giveaway was a choice they made vs budgeting differently. The taxes have little to do with it, that's just an additional factor in why a company budgets money the way they do. All the money still has to come from somewhere.

Starbucks is a bank disguised as a coffee company. I mean, sure. They sell coffee. We have stores. But their real profit comes from gift cards. And maybe customers data.

Cute. My husband and I were talking today you can get lots of freebies if you're willing to give out your personal info and allow these corporations to track you and your purchases.
