SSV Promotion Advice/Questions? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by enbyasha
For those who don't want to read a little backstory just skip past the first paragraph :)

I've been with the siren for almost a year now, and ever since I started I've made it a point to focus on growth and reliability so I can be a strong partner people can come to. My shift leads and DM all want me to promote to SSV (mainly because we lack enough supervisor bodies and no one wants to promote); I've been being coached and was given the responsibility to semi-lead the floor on busier shifts so my supervisors could focus on stuff like pulls and deposits- and while I was worried I'd be really scatterbrained trying to run the floor, I noticed that my partners listen to my floor plans and digest my coaching well, and I was comfortable and confident running the floor; So along with the good reaction from partners, my SSV's and DM's endorsement, and my confidence in that role, I'm 100% considering applying for the promotion.

Here's where I'm a bit stuck: I'm not a barista trainer. For months now when she was still here my original hiring manager has wanted me to become one but no one has taken the steps with me to get the ball rolling and have me officially certified no matter how hard I push for it. Our store has a super big problem with management, and I'm not sure how long it'll be before we get a manager that'll actually help me take the steps to become one.

So would it be possible to become a shift lead if I'm not currently a barista trainer? I have seen some stuff about how it's policy that partner's looking to promote need to have taken at least one person under their wing as a certified barista trainer because of the coaching experience and floor knowledge; So I'm concerned that if I apply to promote my time will be wasted and I'll be immediately denied because of that. Or would it be possible that in the promotion process I can be certified, have trained someone, and then I go through the training steps to officially promote?

If you can't tell I'm extremely confused about this entire process. Our original manager has been on an LOA for almost 8 months now and we've been on and off managers who won't take the time to connect with me about the correct steps to promote. I would ask my DM but he's never at our store and he's always too busy to be able to have a sit-down with me.

Any advice or similar experiences anyone would like to share at all is completely welcomed. Apart from wanting to be a pillar of support for my partners, I also really need this promotion from a financial perspective. I'm almost desperate for anything anyone would like to share haha

I’m going through an extremely similar situation rn, like almost identical. My advice, apply at other stores as an ssv. You don’t need to be a trainer to do that. When your application is pulled and you get transferred, you’ll either become a trainer, train someone and then promote or automatically promote. Try to lend yourself out to other stores and make your name known.

You can apply to positions at your home store but it might be harder. Also depends on if they need another shift. I know where I’m at, they try not to promote in-house.

my store is the opposite, we mainly promote in house because me and my coworkers hate it when they promote outside. there’s nothing like having a manager that knows absolutely nothing about the job be promoted from outside.

I’ve been a partner for about 2.5 years, and I was training/coaching partners my first month in because we opened a new store and I had a much better grasp on what we were doing than some of our other new hires did. I was promoted to SSV just over a year ago, and I literally just went through the Barista Trainer training on my learning right before starting the SSV training. So honestly, it probably won’t be an issue they just need to assign you the training.
