Yes, coffee break is still a thing available to ALL partners. I’m not sure what exactly the terms are but here’s what I know…
1. You are guaranteed your position back if you take a year (like you stated) but are not guaranteed same store. If you take 6 months off then the same store can be guaranteed.
2. Your insurance is no longer available unless you decide to do COBRA.
3. It’s similar to a LOA that you aren’t being paid but I’m unsure if you still get your mark out or discount.
I don’t know about all stores being unionized. I doubt they all will. If your store is one that is talking about it and if they proceed I’m sure you would be able to discuss it with a union rep. I completely understand the fear around taking a coffee break. I have thought about it myself but have been too scared to move forward with it (it never seems like a good time to be without an income even for a short while). I have taken a LOA when my mental health and other issues came up about 4 years ago. What about a medical LOA?

On your coffee break you do keep your insurance without having to go on COBRA and you also get your discount and weekly bean markout while on the coffee break.

OP, call Partner Resources and tell them you want to take your coffee break. They’ll give you the phone number to call Sedgwick because they’re the ones handling your break. They’ll send you paperwork that you fill out and just hand to your manager and DM to sign. It’s a really simple process aside from giving your manager paperwork and waiting for the sign off. You can use your vacation pay but using sick pay is up to your manager.

You’ve worked hard for this company and I really encourage you to take advantage of all benefits offered because you have earned them and you deserve it. At the very least, taking a coffee break is extremely freeing and does wonders for your mental health, especially during these (IMO) darkest of times in Starbucks history.

I have taken 3 medical l.o.a. in my long time with Starbucks as this is a chronic condition which just happens to be a bit out of control at the moment, and I am terrified people will think I am just taking advantage of a loophole. In my current store I feel like this might especially be an issue as my manager is just a bit of a cut throat. I've tried for disability as well, but was told that because I have such a strong work history and work so many hours I would never qualify. I'm kinda hitting a wall.

How long have you been with the Bux? I too am a lifer. It sucks when you have an unsupportive SM. You do what you gotta do for your physical and mental health whether it’s a Coffee Break or another medical or even a personal LOA. I’m sorry but screw what anyone thinks. You have more than earned the CB and LOAs are part of everyone’s benefits.

I don't want to say exactly how long I've been around in case someone recognizes me lol, but let's just say I'm like a couple months away from yet another plaque.

I completely understand that! Congrats by the way. I used to look forward to the anniversary milestone perks until they took away the one I really looked forward to (15 yr get a trip to anywhere there is a Starbucks). I don’t like the WOW points though I’m happy they don’t expire anymore. Maybe I just don’t know how to utilize them 🤷🏽‍♀️

You do get to keep your medical/dental/vision as long as you’re paying the premium out of pocket for the duration of the break. You also keep your 30% discount and coffee mark out.

I’m at 13 years and have accepted that I will never afford to be able to take my coffee break.

I really can't afford it either, but another hospital stay is out of the question, so eh lol

Medical requires medical LOA. If you apply for coffee break, use another reason.

Look on the partner hub and click the links through there to find what you’re looking for, there’s a huge document, maybe like 300-400 pages. I can’t remember where exactly it is but it’s on partner hub.

Thank you for the tip! Sounds intimidating so I will have to get to it later lol but I feel better knowing that if there is that much info on it, it at least exists. :)

The whole thing isn’t 300-400 pages on the coffee break, but that document explains everything about leaves at Starbucks and benefits. It helped a lot when I was looking at my LOA yesterday! Good luck, and props to you for staying at Starbucks for that long!
