wait isn’t the minimum age for sbux barista 16 (might be wrong) and if you’re in school plus a minor the most they can schedule you for is 20 hours a week???
roovols [OP] 73 points 1y ago
My state (Montana) Hires at 14
Levinem717 35 points 1y ago
Oh my god that’s wild.
crzyshiba 18 points 1y ago
I thought the same that is crazy … child labor
Levinem717 37 points 1y ago
In an ideal world, no 14 year old should be working.
GarbageValuable1888 2 points 1y ago
omg! all of my trainings mention how you can be a shift at 14 in Montana. Clearly they don’t gaf about child labor
Paverunner 2 points 1y ago
Depends on the state
roovols [OP] 61 points 1y ago
i should note that i’ve already told my SM that I shouldn’t be working this much (online school) + about The law. Lol.
kittenpickle 28 points 1y ago
Talk to your DM or PCC. Not okay. And honestly, if nothing fixes it… Report it to Ethics and Compliance.
krty98 10 points 1y ago
If this is the case, you should go to your DM
forbiddenbrownies 5 points 1y ago
as a 16 y/o partner im so so sorry, i've had more than a few run ins with my sm about the minor break laws in my state. talk to ur dm if it becomes a bigger issue or doesn't get resolved.
hoewenn 48 points 1y ago
And I’m willing to bet the partners with bills to pay and mouths to feed are getting half that haha
roovols [OP] 21 points 1y ago
literally. it makes me mad.
hoewenn 13 points 1y ago
Same! After Starbucks I started working at a smaller coffee shop and they did the same thing. The teenagers with school and extracurriculars got 20+ hours, the adults like me who *need* hours to simply live got under 14. Ridiculous
hecaete47 6 points 1y ago
It's not just Starbucks... I work a retail job and last week, the store manager gave me barely two shifts' worth of hours and gave the youngest employee, the high schooler, twice that. I also experienced, at a fast food job, being in high school and getting significantly more hours than adult co-workers. Make it make sense!!! Why do managers do that??
Wilhelm126 2 points 1y ago
I’m guessing it is cause they don’t need to pay minors as much or they don’t need benefits or such
siriushendrix 4 points 1y ago
If your SM doesn’t do anything about that, my last week working, I gave away as many shifts as I could. Maybe try to get shifts covered by the ones you know need the hours to pay bills? Of course you don’t have to. Just an idea
Have_Donut 26 points 1y ago
Just let your SM know. Chances are there are a couple people at your store who love to scoop up hours. My and a girl at my store regular go into OT covering shifts because we like the hours.
dxdewhxt 13 points 1y ago
aren’t you not allowed to get over 20 hours if you’re under 18?
Interesting_Seat_309 18 points 1y ago
i'm 17 and have worked 38 hour weeks
krym32zamoon 5 points 1y ago
During the school year you can't schedule a minor over 20 but they can pick up hours to work more than 20
persona-2 1 points 1y ago
They are not allowed to pick up hours to get over 20. Both the minor and their manager will be in trouble.
krym32zamoon 1 points 1y ago
I've had my manager specifically tell the minor in my presence that they're allowed to only schedule 20 and under but they could pick up more if they chose too. Lol no one ever got in trouble. Even now any minors I saw who were scheduled maybe 10-15 hrs but maybe helped out a full shift on the weekend to cover for someone or something and happened to pass 20 there was never any talk of it being bad or against any rules.
persona-2 1 points 1y ago
It is though. Maybe your SM doesn’t know. Both parties could get separated for it if found out. I’m just advising to not risk it if you need the job.
hufflepuffisonfleek 5 points 1y ago
I don’t know if there’s a limit hours wise. But while in school (or even just during school hours) a minor cannot work more than 4 hours a day on a weekday. But because OP is 15 there are gonna be stricter laws most likely. Most labor laws have more restrictions for people under 16
Emarie2200 4 points 1y ago
Is 20 hours really a lot for high schoolers?

Is 20 hours really a lot for high schoolers?

Edit: I didn’t notice the second slide. 😳 you should report that if you’ve already spoken with your SM.
Fine-Entrepreneur-61 3 points 1y ago
i’m a senior and i’m scheduled 20-25 hrs a week
Emarie2200 1 points 1y ago
I don’t think 20hrs is anything tbh. But if you’re crammed with hw and time management skills are trash, I’d assume it may be difficult for some (and may be against laws depending on your state).
I’m a full time college student in my 3rd year and work 30+hr weeks and it sucks sometimes , but it’s manageable for myself.
c-3le 3 points 1y ago
try changing your availability and talk to your SM
Beneficial_Ad_7044 2 points 1y ago
Starbucks hires 15 year olds? I thought it was 16+
sero5074 2 points 1y ago
Please give them to a coworker who needs them.
-_-slimshady 2 points 1y ago
there’s a lot of people talking about 20 being the cut of for minors. i believe the actual law is 20 hours collective between regular school days (monday through friday). weekends are fair game as long as you don’t work over 8 hours in one day i believe. i also don’t know if that still applies if you’re a minor but not in school or if there’s holiday breaks/days you have off school on a regular weekday.

that was my understanding from what i read + what my SM has said when i was a minor.

edit: clarification.
persona-2 1 points 1y ago
Nope. It’s 20 during the school year. Full stop. SMs do break rules, but they can get in legal trouble for it.

Exceptions - summer break. Limits - 48 hours a week, 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. None of those can be broken.

If a minor is graduated, has a GED, or is emancipated. They can then follow summer rules instead of school year rules. Home school or running start or online school don’t count here.
Exceptions - summer break. 40 hours a week up
TheGoldBlaster6nine 1 points 1y ago
It is a pretty hefty schedule if you are doing school and stuff. I get 40+ hours at 16/yo with school.
