Hey guys really weird question is it just me or does anyone else feel a little weird when a customer says your name ? I get that it’s right there for them to see and if they’re thanking us but it still catches me off guard. I’m just wondering if anyone else feels the same way ?

rjflorezzz1224 [OP]9 points1y ago
i just stand there 🧍🏾 then i remember oh yeah i’m wearing a name tag for once
Interesting_Seat_30921 points1y ago
definitely not! it always off-puts me a little bit, i don't really like that we have to wear name tags in general though, i do not need them knowing my name
impasse60214 points1y ago
Oh yeah it feels weird af like to me, it feels too personal for a random person to just come up and say my name
The_xenophile013 points1y ago
Yeah like bro just get your coffee and go. Don't mind me! Pay for your coffee and pumpkin loaf and go about your business!
rjflorezzz1224 [OP]8 points1y ago
For real it’s like damn bro keep moving we not friends like that
Comfortable-Plane9446 points1y ago
Lol I never have my name on my name tag for that reason. Also, I don’t want the Karen’s of the world to have my name. I’m waiting for the day one calls to complain about someone who doesn’t work there 😂

I’ve had many customers get mad at me bc I fight back when they’re just wrong. And they’ll ask for my name (bc our store doesn’t have name tags rn for some reason and I guess we all “lost” ours???) but I’ll tell them and spell it for them 😂 they never call.

It’s such an awful and weird power dynamic kind of thing. I know it probably varies from store to store but I’m lucky enough that my manager doesn’t mind if I put random nonsense on my name tag instead of my name. I’ve been Butter, Al Capone, rhode island, silly goose, and a variety of other “names”. Sometime you get the occasional grumpy middle old person but most of the time people think it’s funny. I’d say there’s no harm in testing the waters with this kind of thing. I’m at a tarbucks though so I don’t know how strict corporate stores are

You could use a known-by name or be someone else for the day. Our baristas switch name tags for fun often. And flip it back on the customer. I use IDs, credit cards and SBUX app scans to see customer names. I like using people’s names because it’s a more personal connection but I get how it can weird you out.

>And flip it back on the customer. I use IDs, credit cards and SBUX app scans to see customer names. I like using people’s names because it’s a more personal connection
I immediately get a refund and leave when a worker does this once in a blue moon, that's so incredibly inappropriate. We don't have names on our aprons for "connection", it's so customers can complain about us by name. That's literally it.
Actually having introductions is far more personal than creepily knowing their name without any introduction.
wok3less2 points1y ago
whaaat i like it. makes it seem more personal to me
board-certified2 points1y ago
yeah i just use a fake name and tell everyone else to use one to if they don’t feel comfortable with their own name out there. i’m at a store with a bunch of incidents and people disturbing the third place so i don’t need the crazies knowing my name
irritablegarlic2 points1y ago
yep. imo names are intimate. only when I introduce myself to someone do I expect them to use my name, but even then not frequently. only people I consider close friends are those I feel comfortable with using my name frequently.
Dumfnppl2 points1y ago
I worked for SB for 4 months and never once was even given a name tag lol and this was a corporate store. It was perfect.
briameowmeow2 points1y ago
I change my name to whatever the month is. Right now I’m May!
navkabar1 points1y ago
yes it feels borderline violating lol

It depends. If it's a regular customer obviously you've familiarised yourself with them and vice versa. I'm used to addressing regulars by name "Hello Steve" etc.
I am a bit caught off guard if it's a first time customer addressing me by name, though if it's on the badge I'm guessing that's just them being polite I guess.
I would sooner be addressed by name than have a complete stranger call me things like darling, sweetheart etc. That comes off as pervy and creepy.
If I have to call a stranger anything, it's Sir or Madam. That's polite and civil.

in my experience at sbux, it has often come with a lowkey threat/calling corporate to complain about you tone. like, they say your name to make you believe that they're going to remember it long enough to make that complaint specifically against you. rarely have i ever had them do it to be like, polite or friendly or some shit. it's ALWAYS been a backhanded/backdoor threat.
that said, at my OTHER job, customers use our names all the time and i have often been unsure if i had somehow offended the customer after what i thought was a great exchange (as a result of working at sbux) because they ended the conversation by using my name.
(:

I only hate it when they're being rude. Other than that, I call them by their names, so it's not weird to hear mine back👌
BeardiesRule1121 points1y ago
I straight up never wear my name tag. Fuck That.
PauseAccording201 points1y ago
I genuinely never understood why any company would make someone wear a name tag. I’ve worked at a few places where it’s dress code and I just don’t understand it.
sheep_heavenly1 points1y ago
So instead of saying "the girl with a ponytail was rude", describing half the baristas in a store, they can say "Sarah was rude."
That's literally it. It vanishes from dress codes once you get into more classy/upscale food service. Some employers use nametags for security reasons, but this is largely mitigated by keycard access in modern security situations.
friendlySkeletor1 points1y ago
Definitely for me because I almost invariably get the question"is that really your name?". When I answer yes I occasionally get someone who goes "you know thats a bird right" and in one case kept pestering me about it after getting their drinks.
Edit: for those trying to guess, its in the corvid family of birds
