My opening barista didn't show up this morning, and we are enforcing the two-person need to enter the store in the morning. So I got to sit in my car for half an hour waiting. Then rush to get everything ready, because my managers didn't answer their phones and we couldn't turn off MO. Started the day with refunds and turning people away, happy Monday!
Mea-fae_Owl73139 points1y ago
For the future should this happen again… have your DM’s number in your phone. Call them. They will get your manager up or if there are other stores nearby they will find you another partner to help open. At the very least the DM will turn of mobils until the next partner comes in. A lot of SMs have their phones on DO Not Disturb but usually have the DMs number allowed to go through.
It sucks hard to have to rush to open when the opener is late!!! I’ve had this happen many times. Once when I worked at a cafe store (more than 15 years ago) I had to wait until the 6am partner came in (it was a Sunday). I did not have a cell phone back then. I sat on the patio apologizing to customers.
-Ana-- [OP]55 points1y ago
We've actually been instructed not to reach out to our DM, they want issues to stay within our store. And we're the only store in my city..
This hasn't happened in a while. Previously the shift would just start opening until the next partner came in.
Mea-fae_Owl7339 points1y ago
Instructed by whom, the SM or the DM? If it’s the SM then they know they are in the wrong. The partner who goes in alone could be fired for such a serious safety standard violation. I understand keeping things in store but when it directly affects the customer and the partner, the DM should be notified. I’m sorry your SM isn’t supporting you by not answering their phone. My SM has do not disturb until 6am but if we need her input or help asap she has it set to go through after 3 calls in a row.
-Ana-- [OP]36 points1y ago
By my SM, ASM and half the leadership team in my store. They all feel by bringing in the DM or E&C it's ruining the "trust" we have. So as long as they pay me for the 30 mins I had to wait I honestly dc 🤷🏻♀️
Luckily the customer's I had to turn away were very understanding and weren't upset that they had to wait or didn't get their coffees.
cpv_9181 points1y ago
Calling the DM because your SM doesn't answer and doesn't support is standard. Being told not to call is such a CYA move, I hope your customers reach out to the DM themselves. I know my customers would. 🤣
SSFF6B31 points1y ago
Oh man, that “trust” is such a clear bs term, like “partners”. You gotta look out for yourself, screw what the SM thinks is “right”, especially when they often don’t see what happens in the store firsthand.
And if they treat you differently because you reached out to the DM or Ethics, screw them! It’s not worth working in such a toxic store.
verdeuce5 points1y ago
Telling you NOT to call partner resources or E&C is a violation of your rights to communicate with your employer. Absolutely call your dm and partner resources and tell them you aren’t being supported
purseEffphony4 points1y ago
Yeah that's gaslighting that you would be destroying the "trust" by involving the DM to get people to show up and do their job. What about them showing up for their coworkers or finding someone to cover and earning that trust?
Puzzleheaded-Job5483 points1y ago
Your leadership team is toxic. If you can’t get a hold of your SM then policy is to then call your DM. You’re SM just doesn’t want to get in trouble.
Sarahthelizard10 points1y ago
> We've actually been instructed not to reach out to our DM, they want issues to stay within our store.
No no no, that's like saying "Don't tell teacher daddy hits you", it's incorrect.
nicolelynnejones7 points1y ago
Another store manager can turn your mobiles off too right? We had an emergency once while our SM was on vacation and I had to call the store down the road and she turned our MO&P off
Mea-fae_Owl732 points1y ago
I think technically yes. All SMs who have supervised my store while my SM was on vacation could do it.
-Ana-- [OP]1 points1y ago
Oh! I did not know this! Thanks!
lordofpanthers32 points1y ago
This has happened over five times to me in the last month alone. Longest I had to wait was over an hour :) Im not even a shift. Im the barista waiting for the shifts or the manager. I am SO done. Being paid to sit in the car does not make up for the fact that we have to rush and struggle for the rest of the day since we end up opening at peak pretty much.
cpv_9112 points1y ago
I'm so upset for you. Have you had a conversation with the parties involved?
If not, try to. If that gets you no where and it continues to happen, either kick it to the next level of mgmgt.. a DM or transfer. No reason why your days should be shitty if you are the responsible, mature person and they are not.
lordofpanthers9 points1y ago
I am leaving soon to transfer to another store luckily, but I feel bad for the responsible partners at that store who will have to keep dealing with those behaviors. :(
cpv_915 points1y ago
Then pass my advice on to them. They may need to hear it if they are staying. Good luck to you in your new store. Hopefully you will find better co-workers. 🤞
Bhaisaab8624 points1y ago
I really hate this new trend of SM and DM telling everyone to not contact them because they want to enjoy their work-life balance.
I get reamed when I don’t respond to messages or don’t answer my phone when people call. Pity we don’t get to enjoy a work-life balance.
-Ana-- [OP]7 points1y ago
Luckily in our store we try to respect each other's time off as much as possible. It's just first thing in the morning that sucks when shit hits the fan and the managers are still sleeping or have DND on
ndscvt24 points1y ago
This happened once but it was the shift who was AN HOUR AND A HALF LATE
-Ana-- [OP]12 points1y ago
I feel that. My old SM was consistently 30-60 mins late, and refused to pay me for while I was waiting for her
cpv_9120 points1y ago
That is time theft and you should have reported them to the DM or above.
-Ana-- [OP]6 points1y ago
Honestly did not think of this at the time, and I don't have any records or this, so I can't even go back and fight it
cpv_915 points1y ago
Note to self: don't let anyone deny you what's rightfully yours. 😜
ndscvt10 points1y ago
That’s illegal!
turnipsarerotting10 points1y ago
This happened to one of my shifts, but instead of her open partner not showing up, there was nobody scheduled to open with her. Huge oversight, and she had to wait in her car for half an hour until one of us got there to open up
-Ana-- [OP]5 points1y ago
Ugh that's the worst! This happened to me last summer when I was a barista. The opening shift didn't show, and instead texted the SM and the SM didn't hear the message, so I had to call my ASM and they got mad cause they were on holidays 🤦🏻♀️
kittenpickle3 points1y ago
Look, you need to call your DM for things like this. Your SM and ASM and team leadership saying not to bring in the DM means they know it’s sketch.
djdementia10 points1y ago
Some days you have to try to focus on just one or two tasks at a time rather than getting overwhelmed by the bigger picture.
Here is a pro tip for you (although not sure it would have helped in your particular situation): Mobile order time is estimated based on if the ticket was pulled then it is essentially "done". Try not to pull more than 2-3 tickets at a time, not only do they look overwhelming they actually "fool" the mobile order system into thinkin you are an absolute machine and will continue to feed the machine until it detects a "backup" in the assembly line. If you figure out DPM on your store iPad you can actually see this in action. You can also bump up people as they show up in DPM - but it can take you away from your current task so it's a double edged sword there.
I cringe when I see partners pull 20 tickets on warming when we only have 2 ovens... I get they are trying to look for batch cooking opportunities or maybe non warmed food they can take care of while waiting on an oven but in the end it actually makes things worse. 2 ovens should have 4 -5 tickets MAX pulled.
As long as you feel like you are doing a good job in the moment - everything will eventually get taken care of. Don't sacrifice your health or safety over a busy shift.
Good Luck and hope your day and week get better!
neilgreenbreen7 points1y ago
this is absolutely incorrect. I have had so many customers complain that the app told them it’d be a 15 min wait while we are actively at least 30 behind mobiles and not pulling tickets. I think the app just straight lies tbh it’s a consistent issue and causes a lot of stress and tension almost every day
-Ana-- [OP]4 points1y ago
We don't pull ticket's before we are ready, we pull as they are needed. Partners used to always pull ahead then got overwhelmed when customers were upset by orders not being ready. In my situation this morning, my ovens weren't warmed up and my M2s weren't even ready to go yet, and the customers are racing to work, that's why I had to refund them
saltandseasmoke3 points1y ago
We have a broken printer for mobiles that keeps printing tickets automatically without us actually pulling them - during peak there'll easily be a whole roll it spits out that doubles over, sometimes thirty tickets at a time. As a result our mobile pickup times are NEVER accurate, it sucks so much lol
teet_teet-1 points1y ago
It does suck but it’s not broken. It’s supposed to be that way. If you don’t pull tickets fast enough and get enough orders, it will dump tons of orders and you’ll never see them.
miniinovaa1 points1y ago
Uh no old tickets use to print like the roll bht the new ones SHOULD only ever print one at a time, no matter how many orders you have
FutureKnightMaybe8 points1y ago
Me, a kiosk barista who knew how to get in the locked grocery store at 4:30am by myself with only 8 stockers who couldn’t hear me knock: 😎😎
voxinx5 points1y ago
If you’re instructed not to reach out to your DM, just get some of their cards and leave them on the handoff area. They always have a ton and ours leaves them at our store, if they refuse to give you some honestly this sounds like a PCC issue. You’re gonna get paid for that half hour waiting too!
persona-24 points1y ago
Goodness. Diving through comments has been rough.
First your in the right here. Sit in your car and wait. Put the time you were supposed to start in the book. Get paid for your time.
Calling your SM and any other opening SSV you can is correct. Please don’t call the DM at 3-4am. They aren’t up. Their phone isn’t on. And they have no other way to reach your SM besides what your doing.
If this is more then a weird one time thing then yes do report it to your dm. Their phone # and email has to be posted by the schedule. If not complain.
Also you are correct to never go in alone. If you are an SSV and must enter alone for safety reasons call your DM and SM in that order as you enter the store. Not after. And report the safety reason for which you must enter alone.
Final-Bell-61033 points1y ago
That happened to us one day, our SM called out the night before and we couldn’t open till 8am & we’re suppose to open at 5:30🥲 we also had to close 2 hours early because of no closing SM
SportsChick793 points1y ago
I open and there are usually three of us, myself, another partner and the SSV. We had the second partner call out a couple weeks ago, so my SM turned off MO and Delivery until 7 when we had close to full staff. Lobby stayed closed until then as well. Made it easier to get through with 2 of us for the first 45 minutes, then 3 of us until 7
I've also had my SSV show up like 40 minutes late. I got strict instructions from my SM to call if a SSV is ever more than 2 minutes late.
SmittyComic2 points1y ago
first off, so sorry this happened to you. It is super shitty to have to deal with ALL of that.
had an issue where someone was late a few times a week and always made opening hard. ALWAYS jump over the manager if they don't do anything if it happens again. Nothing happens with the DM? JUMP over their head to the corporate number and let them rain shit down on reginal to dm to sm till it gets FIXED. Shit will get done SO fast if your bosses bosses boss has to have a conversation about something like safety and customers.
Glum_Clothes74081 points1y ago
This happened to me. I was in the parking lot at 4 for our 415 open and waited until the 6 am partner showed up bc no one answered their phones. I had to walk up to customers cars to tell them their mobile orders weren't going to be ready. It was so stressful. 2 person open is hard.
GibleIsCute1 points1y ago
This happened to me within the first week of opening. I arrive at the store 15 minutes before opening and have to stand out in the cold (this was early February) and here I am trying to get hold of my manager. When I finally DO get hold of him he says to contact one of the supervisors who's meant to be opening. So I do that, turns out he overslept. Dude turns up 40 minutes late while I'm practically freezing to death.
Aliciarox111891 points1y ago
If you want to feel better this happened to me and couldn't get of any store managers (tried 3) and I was waiting for 4 HOURS .. because it was 15 degrees out car battery died and I left early cause of when the AAA came my manager said it was fine and was shocked I stayed
Hazel_is_Trans1 points1y ago
Was my store today
teet_teet0 points1y ago
Because of this, I had to start just going in alone if someone wasn’t there right at the time we were supposed to be there. I couldn’t wait around for everyone to show up. Had to call the DM every other morning at 5:00 to shut off mobile due to call offs, short product, or broken machines. I left after 15 years last March. Now I’m with Marriott and tbh it’s not much better if at all.
trentablondelatte1 points1y ago
you’re allowed to open alone? we never are
teet_teet1 points1y ago
I mean no. But it was either that or I sit in the parking lot for an hour and wait for the next person to show up while orders are piling in. It was such a regular thing I just didn’t have the energy to try to catch up anymore. I’d go get everything started and keep the lobby closed until someone else got there or I could get ahold of my DM to shut off mobile.
