Covid disclosure: Are the managers allowed to disclose who has Covid? I know they have to disclose exposure, but isn’t it a violation if they say who? (self.starbucksbaristas)

HIPAA only applies to healthcare providers. It doesn’t apply to just any employer. Most employers are not “covered entities” under HIPAA and therefore aren’t bound by those rules. In other words, HIPAA does not prevent an employer from sharing employee health information with other employees.

It’s not a HIPAA thing, but it is a privacy concern and managers should not be saying who has Covid, unless the employee gave permission to make that information public

They aren’t supposed to say, as far as I know

nah they can’t disclose any medical info, it’s a HIPAA violation and they can get sued.

HIPAA is for medical providers lol.

HIPAA is for anyone who stores medical information, which is why most non-healthcare places will not disclose medical information as they are on the fringe of the regulatory authority of HIPAA but not completely clear of it.

according to the $1 “The HIPAA Privacy Rule…. applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically.”. it does not apply to employers.

$1 specifically covers employers, HIPAA, and covid-19

isn’t that the one where they can’t disclose medicine files?
QuietCity333 2 points 1y ago
that is what HIPAA says but it only applies to medical providers. starbucks managers do not take the hippocratic oath lol

oh that’s my bad lol, i took a medical terminology class in hs as an elective but forgot most of it already, but at my job before covid we were only allowed to disclose covid status and vaccine status to HR, and my coworkers were telling me about an incident where an old manager told everyone who had covid and unfortunately started getting threats from the other employees

It’s a medical privacy issue so no they are not supposed to disclose.
