this exact relatable situation(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by pinkyogi
you are on register; your coworkers are on bar. you get a long labeled coffee order. it is during a rush. you have to put in 10 pumps of mocha. you are now in the way of your coworkers on bar. you also have to add steamed heavy cream. you contemplate whether you will do it yourself or request that they steam it. you just do it yourself. you are in the way and it is loud. next, you must add whip and mocha drizzle. you are in the way. lastly, this person wants cinnamon powder. once again, you are in the way.

We’ve worked out a system in my store that as long as the brewed coffee is only getting sugars and creamer (including alternatives) then the register partner gets it. We have sugars and cream (carafe) at our brew station. Before there was a “don’t make” button on the register we would input “No”, “Don’t Make” or “ DM” as the name or the ask me. If the brew has a shot, steamed whatever, or multiple syrups we let the bar partner handle it. It works well for us in keeping with the flow.

Yes! Same in all the stores I’ve worked in too!!
canidieyet_9 points1y ago
this is how my old store operated! it flowed so much better. my current store, register gets all coffee even if it’s got 5 shots. you just have to accept you’re going to be annoying and in the way at times
SportsChick796 points1y ago
same at my store. Adding sugars and stuff near the brewers has made all the difference in the excuse me, sorry, can I grab moments.

My store doesn’t print stickers for brewed coffees

To me, I just wish that my co-workers who are on register when I'm on bar would communicate with me about coffee orders. Sometimes they don't say anything and other times they do. Like if they ring up somebody at the register for a coffee with some sugars and cream or whatever is in there or even if it's just black coffee, I've brought it up to them before and I said "hey can you guys please let me know if you're able to grab that customers coffee or not so that way I know whether I should prep the cup for you or prep the cup and get it myself or put it on the counter behind you so you can get it when you're ready"
And their response is " when you get to the sticker just ask me about the coffee"
But like I'm thinking to myself like they're the ones that are coming into contact with the coffee order first so they should be the ones to communicate it to me like hey can you grab it or hey I can grab it in a second or oh i didnt grab it yet.
Perfect-Leadership583 points1y ago
nah if i’m on register 9/10 times i’m grabbing the coffee, and i’ll just tell them “hey when a coffee comes out with ___, i already made it” and even if they forget they can always just ask. but how hard is it to just communicate, it’s like half the job anyways. PLUS it’s so much easier to tell them rather than them make it and hand it out to no one, or for them to have to stop what they’re doing to ask me.
Responsible_Snow71092 points1y ago
Thank u!! Yess i wish the baristas ay my store thought like this but sadly alot of them dont. Even if they cant grab the coffee, just communicate something with me so i kno wat go do. Why should i have to wait til i get to the coffee sticker and ask the barista on register if they got it or not? Then we would all be sitting there in silence because I might be slammed with Cafe orders and mobile orders so I might not even get to their coffee sticker that soon so they could at least tell me like oh hey I have a long line at the register so do you mind just putting the cup for the customers coffee on the counter right behind me and I'll grab it in a second? Or they could just type on the sticker "dont make" or "got it"
Perfect-Leadership582 points1y ago
it’s really not hard to just let people know ya know? i mean it’s faster and easier to just give a heads up rather than just leave baristas in the dark guessing, especially if it’s busy.
Responsible_Snow71092 points1y ago
Exactly! Why should there be silence when you're the one at the register coming into contact with that person's coffee order first since you're the one that is ringing them up so right after you ring them up, you should communicate something with me
tantelope15 points1y ago
the way i do it is i just kinda interrupt my baristas and say “hey ___, when you have a second, i need 2 splenda” or something like that so they know I need their attention but they don’t drop what they’re doing.
most of my coworkers don’t mind and they ask me to do favors in return (“can you start a chocolate cold foam for me” or “can you pour and finish the frapps”) but it also helps that our drive through register is right next to cold bar

Hi supervisor here.
So the way we run things at my store is that that “Black coffee” is the only thing register handles. If they want milk and sugar they gotta wait like they ordered any other beverage. Because just as you point out. It made nonsense to congest the bar. Also what gives these customers priority over the customers before them? The fact the also ordered coffee? Ya fuckem they wait just like everyone else
BeardiesRule1127 points1y ago
Why should someone that wants some cream and a sugar in their coffee wait behind Karen’s 18 Frappuccino’s? At my store we get it unless it needs steamed milk, which I’ll pour the coffee bit and hand it to the bar, usually they’ll have it right out.
[deleted]2 points1y ago
Because you’re a customer paying for Starbucks just like this “Karen” and I’m creating the third place for everyone not just you. So you can take your attitude and wait in line just like everyone else
BeardiesRule11210 points1y ago
We had wayyy too many issues w ppl complaining about having to wait 15-20 mins just for us to get to their pike with cream sticker, it just wasn’t working. Some of the hot coffee customers are honestly the rudest in my experience.
sheep_heavenly1 points1y ago
If the wait is 15-20 minutes it's not a problem with your routines, it's a problem with the way corporate staffs your store.
My stores solution is simple. Bar makes drinks. If the person on register isn't busy and can help they wash up and grab drips that get passed over. Stopping to get a coffee every single time would make our line insane.
[deleted]0 points1y ago
The other thing is think about it from a logistics standpoint point of which customer makes more money for Starbucks. A frapp cost like 65 cents to make and we sell it for 6.45$ While a bag of coffee is rather expensive in comparison and we only sale the coffee for 3.25$ So our profit margin that gives you your job comes from “Karen’s” and not “Angry coffee joes”.
noeyoureatowel6 points1y ago
We keep sugars and a carafe of half and half at our brewing station, which simplifies a lot of this particular issue.
abandon_hopeless6 points1y ago
Maybe this is just my store because we do not have a drive thru and are fairly low traffic, but we don't print stickers at all for drip coffee or hot teas, the register partner does it. If its a mobile the sticker prints but register partner still usually grabs it so bar partner doesn't have to walk all the way over to the brewing station.
12nipples4 points1y ago
My store only lets you make black coffees or basic hot teas if you're on register
Latter-Guava-47343 points1y ago
I never know what to do in this situation (especially steamed mills) because I see the people on bar flooding in orders and having their own little system going. I really don’t want to go over and interrupt them being like, “Hey can you steam some half and half for this coffee?” since I feel like it just messes with their sequence or whatever. At the same time though, me going over to try to steam it myself takes over one of the machines which again might mess with the sequence.
sheep_heavenly3 points1y ago
I usually plop it down on bar near them and say "Hot, just needs steamed cream." Hot because hey, full cup with angry liquid that will hurt you if spilled, and now they can sequence it in by knowing what needs done for it.
yungfroggie1 points1y ago
im my experience it’s best that if you’re on reg you only get coffees and teas with minimal customizations (so like sugar, honey, cream, etc). hot bar should take care of custom coffees and tea lattes simply bc of getting in the way like that
Thts-atiny11 points1y ago
You…will always be in the way 😬
pinkyogi [OP]2 points1y ago
right?? to be fair i’m on bar 99% of the time bc my shifts love to torture me but when i’m ever getting coffee mobiles i feel SO in the way bc i know what it’s like 😭
crzyshiba1 points1y ago
At my store all hot coffee and teas at made up front and those stickers don’t print out unless it’s a HCMT.. and with those we prep them up front then pass it to bar to finish the drink .. but it’s Interesting to see how different stores do that
pinkyogi [OP]2 points1y ago
it’s no different, just a fake scenario based on real mobiles people are very picky lmao
