pros and cons of working at starbucks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TreeguyStayhigh
For reference i’m 16 & (kind of) in school, my nearest starbucks is hiring for part time evening shift & i’m thinking of taking it but thing is;
This would my first ACTUAL job, i have 0 people skills & can get easily overstimulated when being around multiple people i don’t know, oh and I can’t handle money for the life of me & seriously don’t think i could handle being on the register.
With all that said, i get it probably sounds like the obvious answer is to NOT go for the job but i seriously want to start making some kind of money yknow? & being a Barista is one of the few jobs i think that i could handle & would actually like but there aren’t any local cafes hiring that i could find so sbux is the only option atm :(
anyway, y’all got any recommendations on what to do or the general pros & cons of the job?

Well, the bare minimum requirements in a normal day of working at Starbucks is handling the register, talking with customers, and being comfortable with loud music, constant headset talking, and loud noises (blenders, steam wands, etc)
It doesn't sound like Starbucks would be a good fit for you. I have a coworker who exhibits the same traits as you, they are exclusively put on dishes. They occasionally walk out when they're overstimulated, and my manager hates them so much that she fired them without technically "firing" them.
Barista jobs are entirely customer, cash, and stimulation oriented. This will be an existing issue whether you get hired by a local or big-name coffee shop.
Unless you're exaggerating the nature of your issues, coffee shops & fast food would not be a good place.
Grocery stores sound like a better starting place than starbucks
Aside from this ^^
Starbucks has good pay, but shitty tips. It has the potential for free college, but most people don't manage to stay employed long enough to utilize it fully. You'll have regular customers, but more notably, you'll have regulars who you absolutely hate.
There's a big give and take.

Starbucks is a good way to learn some people skills since the job kind of forces it. Even if you think you have no people skills, I'm sure you will be just fine. Do you know if the store you want to apply to is a drive thru? Cafe only stores are a bit less overwhelming.
If you really want a job then I would say go for it, just be prepared to learn and know that it takes a few months to feel confident being on all the positions.

You’re gonna be shitty at your first job regardless of what it is!! But you will catch on!! I would say go for it

i was the same way when i was sixteen. i was absolutely convinced that i would be too nervous to talk to customers or handle money. even starting at my current job as a barista i wasn’t sure if i could multitask. I promise that nobody is going to judge you for not being good at first. I think if you want to work there you should definitely try. I know I don’t know the severity of your struggles but I still think it could be a great learning experience for you like it was for me! keep in mind though, if you are overstimulated easily it might be difficult to adjust to taking orders through a headset if you’re working at a DT store. just keep in mind what your actual limitations are vs what skills you don’t feel confident about. all skills come with time <3

I’m a natural introvert but I’m a friendly one so I still interviewed at Starbucks…
Not my jam. Extroverts thrive and also tall people thrive there. Everything is way out of reach even as simple as syrups…It’s also extremely stressful
But I think that if you really want to work there, you should still try it out. If you don’t like it, you can just quit and find a better fitting job. But I do encourage to at least try it. You can meet cool people and get Starbucks perks.

personally my first job was at a grocery store and I think it’s a good stepping stone to a barista position. It’s less overwhelming and overstimulating, slower paced environment and doesn’t require the same intensity of customer interaction. And I don’t mean a grocery store like walmart, one where there are few to no self checkouts and most people checkout with a person as a cashier. Starbucks requires you to do every position in the store, this includes register, bar, CS (which is like doing all the little things that allow everyone else to work efficiently), and DT if you go work at a drive thru store. I think if you end up unable to handle working at a grocery store you definitely wouldn’t survive at a starbucks.

16 year olds usually can't do that. You have to have had a license for a few years right?
