Advice for opening as a shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by littleorphananney
I have my first open as a shift this weekend and it’s by myself (no shifts helping but I do have a barista helping) One of the opener shifts is on LOA and the other refuses to work weekends. I offered because I need the experience. What all do I need to do? My SM said they’d send me a list but I want an idea now so I can mentally prepare myself. I know I need to do opening safe count, brew coffees and teas, iced coffees, setting up tills, turning espresso bars on. What else do I need to do? Can someone ELI5 the milk count process?

TIA.

Here's my routine.
- Wake Mastrenas
- Start safe countdown to open
- Brew iced coffees (set 7 min timer)
- Brew teas (set 5 min timer)
- Turn on dishwasher & music
- Get 2 buckets of ice for cold bar (for iced coffees and teas)
- Open safe
- Load espresso beans into hoppers
- Start Mastrenas auto calibration
- Set up cold bar refreshers & inclusions
- Toss tea bags and add ice
- Pour iced coffees into pitchers & drain urns
- Add ice to iced coffees
- Start brewing Pike & Dark (set 7 min timer)
- Count and load tills into drawers
- Fill ice bins
- Brew Blonde and prep Pike for next cycle
- Get sani bucket and trays

At this point we're at or runnining through opening time. This is when I do tasks like preparing a new cube of whatever beans I may be low on for the brewers, double checking dates/times on chai, mocha, etc.

It should be noted that I'm in a small cafe store. No drive through. So I don't know what other tasks might need to be done in that situation. Also, I'm running through this in my head, and easier for me to actually do in the moment. So hopefully I'm not forgetting anything. 😅 Also, we don't have milk counts due to how deliveries work for our location. So...there's also that. But when we did have to do them, I did those after opening.

Hope this helps some.

They're getting the food setup done. So cooking display food for the pastry case, day dotting all the food that goes out at the end of that day, loading the pastry cart with items from the thaw rack, and loading the warning fridge with sandwiches from the BOH thaw fridge.

I really hope ELI5 = explain like i’m 5 because I have asked this same question before like BREAK IT DOWN FOR ME AND BE SPECIFIC. I’m a brand new shift. I asked questions here and also searched r/starbucksbaristas for “opening” “ssv” “checklist” “shift” etc. for older but still too not answers.
