advice on how to approach new manager about availability? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by promisestorm
so recently i transferred to a store back home. i set my availability as any day a week, 30 hours but only up to four days a week (i told her this explicitly) i look at my schedule and they have me for six days in a row, with 5 hour shifts. i’m a bit nervy on asking a lot from a new manager who i have never met. am i being too picky? what should i say?

If you don’t fix it immediately they’ll continue to push your limits. I learned this quickly, say something now.

you’re right. i should know better from other people’s experiences i’ve read on here lol. will do, thanks!

Politely remind them again and again. You can go online too I think and edit your availability if they’re selectively deaf

update: i asked one of my SM’s at my old store and she said she can technically do that… and talked to me like i was stupid. should i still try? 😭

she was like “you just have to help the store the way theyre scheduling you” i was like ok..? lmao

You can’t help them if it’s outside of your availability

youre right, but how exactly do i say it? sorry if it’s a dumb question

No such thing lol. Ask for a minute alone with them. Then “I understand the schedule is made to best serve the needs of the business and team; however looking at my schedule I noticed I’m scheduled for shifts outside of my availability. My most updated availability is (insert). I would really appreciate it if that was taken into consideration when making the schedule.

personally I’m working on this and I kind of want some advice on this too! Personally I’d text or tell your manager something like “hey when you get a chance I’d like to talk to you about my availability please.” Like if you prefer certain shifts (morning, mid-day, etc) either mention it now or restrict your availability in the app bc if you prefer to only work certain times during certain days, they should go by it per se! also any advice for a partner that wants to work mornings but not open?? I haven’t talked to my manager yet but I don’t like opening and would rather not get scheduled to. thanks in advance :)

dude ive never opened yet and this new manager insisted on scheduling me for opening. im kind of annoyed.. do you at least close? cuz im the same way. id rather close than open tbh

I’ve been with starbucks since April of last year and I closed almost all the time from June ‘21- Aug/Sep ‘21. I used to only want nights but recently I’ve started liking morning shifts (I’m one of the strongest bar partners at my store and can sometimes double and help with DTO). I still don’t mind working night but I’m kind of pickier on who I close with, I’ve been told I’m one of the best employees at my store, so I work 25-30+ hours a week and my availability is mostly flexible. I’m starting to get tired of closing with certain shifts (I love them, don’t get me wrong) but I literally feel like with a couple of them, nothing I do is enough even if it’s everything. I’ve closed so much that I’m kind of wanting more morning/mid-day shifts and less closing. But I’d suggest letting them know now bc they’ll take advantage of that eventually if it’s not mentioned

i see nothing wrong with expressing exactly that to a manager. if you’re annoyed or uncomfortable don’t torture yourself yk? after all they need you, they should be able to comply with this if you are one of the best workers in the store. good luck!
