Breaks and other barista asking me if i’m a girl or boy?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Dragonsfiery
In the interview process I was told by the manager there would be a ten minute break every two hours. I’m still new, I’ve been here for less than a week and when the manager is here I got breaks. But when she’s gone I haven’t been getting any really. Yesterday, I worked for 5.5 hours and only got one ten minute break. Should I be bringing this up to the manager. I also have a disability and am waiting to hear back after completing the form.

Also unrelated, but I’m a trans woman. All the other baristas she/her me and so do all the customers. But when I was talking to the manager and she had stepped away, one of the other baristas asked me what gender I was like if i was a girl or boy and they can’t figure it out. Then said Im gender goals because they’re non-binary. This situation did make me kind of uncomfortable as they could’ve just shared their pronouns and asked me mine instead of making me feel dysphoric.

for breaks, your hiring manager was wrong. you get only one break if you’re working a shift under 6 hours, if it’s over 6 hours you get a 10 and a lunch (unpaid). and if it’s in the 8 hour range you get another 10 on top of that.

as to the barista question, ask your sm for a pronoun pin! it should help a little :)

It basically boils down to a break every two hours. 4 hour shift? A ten in the middle. 6 hour shift? 10 and 30. 8 hours? Two 10s and a 30.

Granted, you’re not likely to get your breaks on the dot every two hours. But for every two hours worked you earn a break.

about, but saying it that way is slightly more confusing. it sounds like if i work a 5 hour shift i should be getting two 10s because i worked 2 hours twice

Okay yeah, I see it now 😂

Regarding your gender, maybe you should wear a badge that displays your pronouns so people know what to refer to you as/don't enquire about your gender?

This. I hate having to assume or ask because I'm not always super Smooth all the time and I don't want to make people uncomfortable. Those pronoun buttons really do help. Also its a good thing to customize your Apron a bit, so when a partner forgets theirs, yours wont get taken

In Ca you get a lunch at the 5 hour mark but the 10 min breaks are one for a 4 hr shift two for a 6 hr shift. Lunch break vary state to state.

The breaks/hours thing depends on where you’re located. My district covers stores in both Washington and Idaho. In WA, you can work up to 4.75 hours with just one 10, but over 5 hours you must have a 10 and a 30. In ID, you can work 5.75 hours with just a 10, and then over 6 hours you get a 10 and a 30. It just depends on labor laws in your state. I’d ask your manager or shift for clarification…

I’m sorry they didn’t ask politely. It sounds like they were trying to give a compliment and didn’t realize they did the opposite. I’m sorry, that sucks and is NOT cool; if you’re interested I think wearing pronoun pins could be helpful. If they say it again I’d either tell them that it’s not a compliment because you’re a woman, and want to present as such or go straight to a manager and explain that it doesn’t feel good because you are a woman, not non-binary. And it’s hurtful. You’re feelings are valid, babe. You deserve to work in an environment that is comfortable for you just like anyone else. If you’ll have them, internet *hugs* from me. starbucks just came out with pronoun pins if that’s something that’ll interest you :) but as a non binary person i’d personally prefer someone ask my pronouns instead of my “gender” ya know? that’s just a little weird especially from a nb person
