Are any other stores going thru managers every six months?! Ive had 3 the past year and so has every store around me. The dm says he “doesnt like anyone to get comfortable” like wtffff im so tired of having to learn a new managers preferences/ rules/ where they put “re-organized” things 😭 (self.starbucksbaristas)

And also constant outside hire managers/dms who dont even know how to be a barista and say “well at ~insert place~ we did it like this” 🙃🙃

I don’t even know how to process “doesn’t want anyone to get comfortable.” Like wtf. You want everyone to be stressed at all times?!?!?????

Literally, i’m pretty sure our dm is an outside hire. And ive seen him twice? Since he started a year ago... and he came into our store without a mask when we all had to wear them and i was like okaaaasyyyyyy bro..

The realness. I worked at 11 stores during my 15 years with the company. I was always moving around as a manager and I hated it. Having an externally hired DM was literally what made me quit. She was drunk on the coolaid and had no clue how a sbux operated in real life.

I am about to quit. Ive put up with a lot the past six years and it feels soo much like my abusive ex. Like constant promises being let down and having to “wait it out” i just want to find something i can get health insurance starting out😭😭

I've only been here 6 months now but after reading a lot of the stories I'm so glad both my SM and DM work the floor. Although my SM was an outside hire she works the floor at least once a week to make sure she knows her store and she does a great job especially on taking orders in DTO and warming.

My new DM started as a Barista while a teenager. Before she made **any** store changes or recommendations she came in and worked the floor several shifts. She seems like she's still got all the muscle memory working hot bar and did pretty good.

Has something changed since I was at the bux that 'at least once a week' for an SM was a good thing ??? It was half their shift / every weekday peak when I was there, barring any meetings or whatnot.
djdementia 2 points 1y ago
I'm not sure, she used to not work the floor often - when I was first hired she was covering 2 stores - then I had to go on covid lockdown, then she did lockdown and additionally I only work usually 3 days a week.

Could just be a timing issue and things are just now finally getting back to normal. I never look at the printed schedule to see who is working - I just pay attention to my own hours on the app.
esaeklsg 4 points 1y ago
Yeaaaahhh... so, that's an extremely low amount of time for an SM to be on the floor. All the good SMs I had would be on the floor \~20 hours a week if not more. They can't model for and coach and develop their team if they're always in the back of house. Their job isn't only admin.

Every SM I have had only worked peak and maybe a little after that. If this is a mainly PM who sees the manager on the floor it would be a miracle.

Wow am I jealous. A DM in touch with being a barista?! ❤️

Our last DM shared the same story but he retired a couple of years ago, boy do I miss him. 😢He was the best. We've had our current DM for 5 years and I can't stand him, didn't like him the first time I met him and my feelings haven't changed since.

I've been with the bux since 2004 and having opened the store I'm with can verify that we are a revolving door of late for SMs. 10 over 18+ years, 5 in the last 5+ years alone. And another coming soon 😬 unfortunately. Of the last 5, only the first one didn't want to leave, we've become a training ground for those wanting to move up (high volume, of the order of DTs, cafe).

It sucks to be.. 'learning' a new SM's managing style, dealing with how knowledgeable they are about the business (outside hire or not), how interested they are in being a leader or just a boss, it's a whole crap shoot.

I'm getting too old for this shit. This job used to be fun but the last 2 and half years have really sucked all the fun and joy out of it. 😕

>Wow am I jealous. A DM in touch with being a barista?

Our last DM would just randomly go through the drive thru every once in a while and come in occasionally for meetings.

So far the new DM seems really good. I'm looking forward to the few changes she recommended already. Plus I'm super glad she won't put up with malfunctioning and sub par gear. She got us all new iPads right away as we were down to our last one that had decent battery life and we only had one working charging station. Starbucks can really only hit target times if all the equipment is working properly. Just having 3 fully working iPads already boosted a little productivity as we can now use DPM.

Even though we're going to lose this SM he has been a breath of fresh air. We spent a year and a half with a manager who refused to spend a dime on equipment. As soon as he took over, we got to replace blender pitchers that were cracked, we got a new blender rinser, new foaming pitcher, new tea pitchers and extras we needed, I could go on. The sad part is.. WE MAKE MONEY in this store she just didn't care.

Having the right tools for the job make huge difference. Happy for you guys!

Our current sm, who i dont want to leave, works the floor 4 days a week at least, and comes on whenever were too busy. She is honestly the best manager ive ever had.

I guess we’re all going through shit with managers. I’m currently on my 6th manager now… since September of last year….
defendpoppunk77 3 points 1y ago
To my knowledge, that’s not how Starbucks likes their stores to run so I’m surprised your DM is allowed to switch out managers so no one gets “comfortable”. To me, that signals a DM who doesn’t want to put in any real oversight to allow for their store managers to grow and develop, or create good store cultures. I worked at a non bux location that cycled through managers like no one’s business and it’s no wonder everyone hated their jobs. I was denied performance raises I earned because they couldn’t attest to my work because they never worked with me. It ruins the partner experience on a number of levels. I also cannot stand a x place we did it like this people/managers. Starbucks has standards for a reason 😤
mcguirme815 3 points 1y ago
It sounds like your dm is in over their head, but they work at starbucks where they are required to be toxically positive, so they can't actually admit they need help.
makmelaf17 2 points 1y ago
Just keep rolling with the punches for everyday is a different challenge... hopefully ur partner get along... cause if not then it's going to get interesting
crzyshiba 2 points 1y ago
I want to become an ASM but damn they make it soo hard… yet they hire a brand new outside hire SM and literally knows nothing and then the partners leave cause they do not like that SM .. so I’m like ummm 🤔 am I missing something ..
celizabeth922 2 points 1y ago
I just left the company as a SM of the same store for the past six years, it is definitely very rare for that to be the case
Twentysixounces 2 points 1y ago
Sounds like your DM is a choad.
Mea-fae_Owl73 2 points 1y ago
I’m pretty lucky that in the last 15 years in the same store we’ve had 5 different managers. Though in the last three years in our district I have seen so many turn overs in the SM position. Way more than there used to be.
emily_fey [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I knoww!!! Ive seen so many of the people i started with 6 years ago go on to be managers and quit since 2020.. its honestly not surprising people are unionizing
BeardiesRule112 2 points 1y ago
I’ve had 9 the last 2.5 years

How can anyone get used to a routine/ build a working relationship with a manager?! Thats not a good thing. It took me a year to build muscle memory when i transferred stores.. i feel sorry for managers honestly.
