Has anyone had "problems" wearing pronoun pins? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Gone_Overboard1632
Our store is ordering them for everyone and updating our calling list with pronouns so no one has to come out if they don't want to. I've bounced around with different pronouns for a while, and my coworkers are pretty supportive, some of them even just sort of default use they/them for everyone who doesn't have a problem with it. I'm just kind of worried about the customers. We've had some... wild cards I guess. What have your experiences been like?

As is usually the case, customers ignore things they should read like change in hours signage and pronoun pins.

Edited to add I wear two they/them pins and have never had any issues from customers besides having the pins ignored lol

one of my shifts wears 4 they/them pins (2 on their hat, 2 on apron) and people either really aren’t paying attention or are deliberately using the wrong pronouns. i hope it’s the former 😬

Our store recently got them, I’ve never been fully out to everyone at my store, but I’m a trans guy. Name is legally changed and I’ve not ever had any issues with partners using correct pronouns. I do get misgendered quite a bit by customers, but it has never felt intentional, just customer service voice, mixed with slightly longer, blue hair. I was worried when I started wearing my pin I would get some comments, but so far no comments, but did still get misgendered almost immediately after putting the pin on, so more like no one even pays attention.

Located in a very very small southern town, not a single customer has said anything about mine or any coworkers pronoun pins (to my knowledge!!) and it’s honestly been refreshing. Customers tend to not really pay attention to things they need to read, so that might be the reason but it’s still nice to not be given issues for wearing them! I personally am a cis/het female but I still wear my she/her pin so none of my coworkers have to feel odd about theirs but truly it’s lovely not to deal with any problems.

I wear a they / them one (and had my own before the new official ones) and customers have rarely commented on it (maybe one curious question in ~5 months, and it wasn't disrespectful or aggressive). But as others have mentioned, customers also will not read. I'm misgendered in almost every interaction with customers - not in a malicious or intentional way, they just don't know or care. It is what it is.

i use they/them, someone at drive window once said “hi NAME, is that your real name?”

uh. yeah. just not legally changed yet. and you know you wouldn’t ask me this if my pin said she/her.

then one time a coworker from my old job was in the drive window. she said “oh hi deadname!!” and was sweet, but i could see her glaring at my name tag and pronoun pin. not sure what she was thinking in the moment.

i’ve been at starbucks for about a month and a half, using my they/them pin the whole time, and so far these are the only negative experiences i’ve had related to gender. if people do judge they at least don’t say anything. they just wanna get their coffee and go.

My own coworkers ignore my they/them pin 🧍 and I wore one that I brought in before the pins where issued. Like I don't mind when it's a language barrier thing but when parents use gendered language towards me to their kids it's really annoying. Most part, people see what they want to see. But I have had some people reference my name/pin positively so there's that as well.

I'm a partner that uses she/he and I've never had a problem, although 99% of the customers and 80% of the partners use she/her (I'm afab). I'm sure they just don't read tbh

In my experience, very very few customers acknowledge my pin. And the only ones that do use the pronouns without saying anything about the pin. Most just ignore it and default to how I present
