grande rant, a sequel (self.starbucksbaristas)

I've posted before about my issues with my shifts never putting me on bar and I think that the issue has come to a peak. At this point, I've had shift supervisors which now are aware of just how long I get stuck on pos and let me have like, an hour? Of bar before the end of my shift.

Since my classes ended in mid April I've been doing close to 30hr a week and I've been asked to pick up shifts almost every week especially by one ssv who both has a record of not cleaning up after himself or even doing any task that they don't want to do. He, at this point, has consistently and constantly put me on pos for hours. Literally if unchallenged, he'd keep my on till for all 30 of my hours. On Monday a coworker asked me to pick up her shift and I decided that if Im coming in at 6am on the day I was supposed to be off, I am just going to be blunt and say I don't want to be on pos and confront him about how even if there's a reason for keeping me stuck on pos, it escapes me and that i find it disrespectful.

My manager and asm essentially have said that they (ssvs) usually "follow the path of least resistance" and all things considered, I am not in a position where I think I'd be putting my job in jeopardy anymore (which honestly was an anxiety for a while). Today was a bad day and I just don't want to keep letting inconsiderate people put me down like this.

I understand that feeling. Also at my store, generally when somebody has been there for 4 to 6 months then they regularly start putting that person on bar. But a couple months in I had started telling them that I love being on bar and making drinks and that it's my favorite position in the store and pretty much every shift of mine is on bar now and I've been there for a little over 2 years. How long have you been at Starbucks?

And I also see it happen to some people that are new that come to my store. Like there was this one person that applied to my location and he got hired. But literally never ever went on bar unless that was like the last resort for them which is pretty messed up. He was literally on POS his whole shifts. Even being there for a year or so, it still wasn't registering to him I've had a ring up drinks correctly. I don't know if it was just that he was a slow learner which is totally fine because I was back in school and I still kind of am right now for certain things. Or it could have either been not enough training. But I just find it really upsetting that they never gave him a chance to go on bar but he ended up leaving a while ago to go into the military.

Definitely start advocating for yourself and tell them that you want more bar time and to start making drinks more often. They should give you a chance and they should rotate Partners around throughout the day. I mean at my store they sometimes rotate Partners around but it all depends on the strengths of the partners that are there at that moment. Like I'm always on bar because they know that I prefer it and I guess they just assumed that other Baristas don't mind where they get put but I always have a cold bar person so it's not like I'm the only one that's ever on bar by myself. But so if you don't let them know that you want to be on bar more often then they might just assume that you don't have a preference of where you're put. I don't know how your store is or I don't know how your SSV is but they should definitely rotate you around even without you saying something because being on POS the whole time is not okay

this happened to me when I first started working for starbucks. I got put on solo dt/oven for 4 months straight. finally a shift asked why I never was on bar and I was like "uhh bcs I was never trained" and she semi trained me afterwards. then I learned a lot on my own and when our store closed for renovations for 2 weeks I was at another store. they put me on dt bar every day,, it was the best feeling ever. after leaving sbux for 6 months I returned and I pushed myself to be one of the people always picked to be on bar. I basically forced myself on there. some of my partners will ask "can I bar today?" and they usually get told yes. maybe try that? I do understand you bcs for the 1st 4 months at sbux when I'd say "why am I always on dt" I'd just get a rude response from the shift. it's hard to get better if you aren't given the chance. what shift do you work? if you work mornings maybe try forcing yourself on bar if you open. if they aren't giving you ANY chances after trying to either ask to be on bar or trying to force yourself on bar I'd revisit with your sm and tell them you feel like your not growing as a barista bcs they will not let you bar for more than an hour. if it continues and if it is possible I'd consider transferring stores!! I'm sorry this is happening , I know how annoying it can be and how dreadful shifts can be. I hope you get to bar more soon!! keep pushing!!

I honestly get miscellaneous shifts and what is a shock to me is that when I was trained on bar my whole store was bordering on shocked at how fast I picked it up, which is why it feels personal to me. I hope I can just shoulder my way onto bar at this point because it's getting ridiculous imho, y'know? Im 5 months in and theres two baristas who started a month ago and get more bar time than me so yeah. Again it genuinely has started to feel personal y'know
