Are new people always thrown on cold bar? (self.starbucksbaristas)

It’s my third week here and I work mornings, and every morning the shift lead has been throwing me on cold bar?? I guess it makes sense if I’m not quite at a speedy pace and there’s gonna be less cold drinks at 6am but it gets pretty busy around 8…. I would’ve thought they would throw me on food or TILL in the mornings but it’s always cold bar first thing. Hot bar is my favorite so I’m ready to be there more often but they very rarely have me there, even in the afternoons, and I can make hot bar drinks too.

No, new people are usually thrown on register/DT window. Like me for the first 6 months. lol

at our store, we try to do that bcos its the hardest position and has some of the harder recipes but you learn to be quick and how to prioritize listening to dt over headset and starting on them as soon as possible i also feel that being on cold bar over anything allows you to retain those harder recipes quicker.

That’s true ; I’ve been learning recipes a lot better the past couple days. But I’ve also been placed on bar during a rush right after my training (my training got cut short too cause my trainer got COVID) so I technically would’ve still been training - and had to switch to food cause the 8am frapp crowd threw me off 😅

at our store (no DT), if we have two people on bar it’s hot bar + cold bar/bar support, so while most of our playcallers are good about giving new people bar time (though they’re probably still gonna be POS/warming during peaks and rushes), our cold bar is usually a more experienced barista
if you haven’t already, though, it’s worth asking your shifts if you can have hot bar time! let them know that you’d like to be there, since they can’t read your mind 😉
