Small Dog Bit Me (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by maritza-723
A small dog bit me at work. I was walking by as a young woman stood in line with her two leashed dogs. One bit my shoe and started shaking its head and growling. I firmly said Your dog is biting me. She pulled it away by the leash, never addressed the animal. I told her if she couldn’t restrain her pet it needed to stay outside. She nonchalantly said okay and ordered a drink and two pupuccinos.
I am a shift and probably would have responded differently if it was anyone else but I was so shocked I didn’t know how to react. The animal didn’t pierce my skin at all, my shoes fit slightly bigger so it really just bit shoe. I’m really upset and don’t know how to appropriately move forward. Should the dog or owner be banned? What is policy regarding pets? Do I file an incident report?

I’d file an incident report. If the dog bites you, it’s bound to bite someone else and if that happens in the store, you’d likely be in some hot water as well, especially if it’s not a service animal.

I’ll be real, I would’ve told her to take her dog outside anyway, regardless of her keeping the dog close. It did the ONE THING you don’t want dogs doing so I don’t think she should’ve had much of a verbal warning, especially cause she didn’t seem concerned to correct the behavior or anything. Someone probably already warned her about it before anyway.

The only animals allowed inside are service animals. That being said if you tell someone “ I’m sorry no animals in the lobby” and they respond with it’s a service animal you thank them for letting you know and move on. Definitely do an incident report.

This is correct. You can pretty much only ask if it’s a service animal, if not they have to be outside.

If the dog has bitten someone then it already did something that allows you to throws out even a service dog.

Yeah what the other commenter said, I would definitely file an incident report because if it bit you then chances are it might bite someone else in the future if she brings them in again just on the leash. And if her dogs bite somebody else in the store then the person that got bit can possibly Sue Starbucks. But definitely file an incident report for sure

Whenever a customer at my store comes in with a dog, it's usually a small dog and they're holding it in their arm with the leash still around the dog. But I've had customers who had big dogs on a leash that they can't bring inside so they just Kane the dog outside to one of the tables or one of the railing things that we have that goes around the sitting area outside so even that's risky cuz the dog can still reach somebody that's walking nearby

Thank you for the empathetic responses. I appreciate the input and filed an incident report. My DM reached out to me to discuss further, but we were busy. Fingers crossed this is resolved without much drama. Thanks again to everyone who commented. 🧜🏽‍♀️
