It’s pretty standard in retail/food service… but it’s probably not legal. They use social pressure to kind of skirt those laws.

The partner guide states if you’re sick you don’t need to. That’s it that’s the post

in the partner handbook it says that in the case of sudden illness it’s on your manager to find coverage- my old manager tried to pull shit like this too, don’t let them intimidate you or write you up for it!!

I think it’s really more of a courtesy thing towards your fellow partners. If you call out 10 minutes before your 7am-2pm shift for example or something, it’ll mess with the peak plan that the SSV made and mean that the team will be a person short with basically no notice. Since the SM won’t be at the store more than half the time, it’s the SSVs who have to call a ton of people to see if they can come in. It makes it waaaaaay easier for us when running around if you yourself are able to find the coverage, and fellow partners are probably going to be more willing to do a solid for you.

That being said, if you’re extremely sick or injured, the SSV can call people for you. But, if it’s just a cold or something, it’s not hard to text some people to see if they can cover it.

If you can find coverage it makes life easier for your coworkers but if your sick and you use sick time your protected from any corrective action.

That’s still very much illegal. If you’re out sick, it’s on your employer to find coverage for you, no matter how many days that is.
It might be difficult to tell them that though. It’s definitely courteous to find coverage for them if you know you’ll be out.
