I started working as a regular “barista” almost 2 months ago.
I was trained for a week, and I was told by my trainer I was pretty good.
Since then, however, I am almost never actually put on bar. I am usually on customer support, and occasionally I do register.
Only when people need their 10s or half hour breaks do I go on bar every once in a while. I havent been on bar (not covering someones break) for more than a month.
To be clear, the few times I was on bar, I was of course slower than the experienced baristas, but didn’t mess up any drinks (maybe like 1?).
Am I being entitled, or is this kind of an oversight? I always get the trash job. Someone hired after me has been placed on bar, and he had to ask me questions.
Edit: I’ve been working 25-30 hours a week
Thanks for the help!

Feel free to ask your shifts for more bar time. Newer people can often be defaulted to cs or register, especially if you may work busier times when they need to prioritize speed. I wouldn’t assume it is a malicious choice to not put you there, so don’t feel down!

Oh, Im def not saying its malicious. I guess I’m just curious if it’s normal for a new person to almost never be put on bar

Unfortunately it is, especially if you work peak and even more so if you work in a drive thru.

Yes, it’s very normal. Like someone commented ask your shift for bar time. As a shift I give green beans bar time to build their skill and reinforce what they learn after peak. If the new barista seems to get overwhelmed or customers are waiting long I will redeploy. If newer hires are getting more bar time than you ask for you’re time on bar.

If you work primarily in morning/peak we always try to have our fastest/most experienced partners on the bars to keep up with the queue at least that’s how it goes in my store (busy dt)

I get cold bar a lot but they never want to put me on hot bar unless it’s really slow and I basically just offer to take over for someone’s break. I’ve been here for 3 weeks though but I’ve been told as well that I handle drinks well. And hot bar is my favorite too.
I feel like maybeee a lot of your coworkers have been there for a while and shifts are just like “might as well put the more experienced person on bar” even if you’re good at bar?? I feel like that’s how it is for me.
