am I required to find coverage for my shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Starryislandgirl
I'm a supervisor and I called out sick for my shift. My store only has four supervisors, including myself, so there was no one for me to reach out to for coverage. I talked to my SM and she says I need to put the shift up on the shift marketplace and call other stores in the area to find coverage. Isn't that their job to find coverage? If I put my shift up on marketplace and no one takes it and I don't go in, will I be written up?

Edit: I just realized I'm not able to put my shift up on the marketplace because it's not more than 24 hours in advance. Will I get in trouble for not calling other stores to find coverage?

You're absolutely not required to by policy but SM and DM level will likely tell you you are. Shitty but common. You may or may not get formally written up- I doubt it though, and if so, go to PCC, that's clear cut against policy and they wrote it down for you- but they'll likely be salty afterwards.

Being sick does NOT make you responsible to cover your own shifts. That is the responsibility of the SM - I am a former SM - they may ask you to TRY and reach out to a few people, but beyond that...not your problem.

When I was hired my SM made it very clear that if i’m calling out because i’m sick then it’s not my responsibility to find coverage. She was very adamant about it and emphasized that our health comes first (but that could be just my SM).She’s very hands off @ my store and I honestly rarely see her but we manage fine🤷🏻‍♀️

My manager is also very hands off but she has the complete opposite approach. I heard her on the phone yesterday with one of our other shifts saying partners need to leave their mental health at the door when they come to work. While I called out today because I'm sick, I still found it very off putting.

that’s insane in any type of work place😞 I’m sorry you have to go through that, maybe contacting the DM and could “ask for clarification about the rules regarding coverage when sick” you’re technically not snitching on your SM but at the same time you’re making your DM aware of the behavior. I hope it works out and you feel better💪🏻💚

Are you using protected sick time?

And are you calling in because you failed the COVID coach?

If you aren’t using protected sick time it can land on you still. If you pass the covid coach and still opt to not come in it can fall on you.

Yes I'll be using my protected sick time for the shift. I called out because I pulled my back. I've been working two jobs the last few weeks, one in the morning and one at night, and it's catching up to my body. I did let them know that but is it still calling out sick if it's a physical ailment?

Officially a sudden onset injury would fall under the SM needing to find coverage. A lingering long time ache type thing wouldn’t. So just be super super careful what you say.
