How often do I have to ask to work bar? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Own_Distribution_940
So, I’ve been with Starbucks since September last year, and my shifts hardly ever put me on bar. I work morning shifts and I’ve expressed interest I want to work cafe bar or even drive bar during peak. However, the shifts usually only put me on cs or dto/ window. Like one shift will always ask what we prefer before peak, and I’ve asked to be put on warming or even bar since I want the practice and still… only get cs. I’ve noticed new hires getting more bar time than I have ever got. If they put me on bar, it’s cold bar. I’ve only ever worked on cafe bar three times ever since starting.

So my question is what do I need to do to be able to get more bar time? Like I may not be the fastest at making drinks or sequencing, but how am I supposed to get better if no one ever lets me get the chance? It’s been frustrating me lately.

i would definitely talk to your SM about it since actively telling your shifts you want bar time isn’t going anywhere. something else you could do is if it’s slow you can ask someone to switch. especially if it’s someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy bar or just wants a break from it.

that being said, i noticed you said you’ve only worked cafe bar 3 times. unfortunately you probably won’t get drive/cafe bar during peak because it’s our busiest times and having fast bar partners is important.

it took ages for me to get bar time. my SM would put me on bar thinking i had enough practice after 4 months, and i had to tell her my supervisors were cramming me into window for the entirety of every shift i had. i didn’t even get to do cs, front or warming lol. it was window all day every day.

Agreed with all of this! I've been with Starbucks for a little over two years now and I'm the second fastest Barista in my store. I work at a cafe/mobile store. So I was always mostly put on register and sometimes on CS. But they would have me practice drinks in the later part of the afternoon like anywhere between 1 and 3 when we got slower and I just rarely ever was on bar during the mornings understandably because that's when it was the busiest. If I was on bar in the mornings then I was on the cold bar. But so I just kept letting them know that bar was my favorite position in the store and they started letting me get on bar more and more often and everytime I come on my shift now, I'm on bar a lot. I just always would express my excitement for bar and now I even poked fun at myself like whenever my manager tells me to go on bar, I always say "the day u guys say no to that, u guys should be concerned" lol.

You need to ask to be put on during off peak hours. I would lead with I'd like to get faster at bar could you switch me over when it slows down?

Good luck!
