Unionizing? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Caffeineadick
What is that? I’ve been on this forum for awhile now and I’m constantly seeing things about unions, I’m 10 months in and this is my first job.

As far as I’m aware my store isn’t union at all and has no plans to unionize, it could be because I’m a Canadian partner but I’m just really confused about it, could someone explain it?

Unionization is when employees organize together in order to bargain with an employer. Right now, you personally have little to no leverage over your employer, so if there’s something you want you have pretty much no way of getting it beyond asking nicely or threatening to quit. When your whole store organizes in order to bargain collectively, that gives you more bargaining power over the company to ask for things like benefits, higher pay, and better treatment. If an employer can’t come to an agreement with a union, that will sometimes result in a union choosing to strike (collectively stop working) which means big losses for the company. In order for your store to unionize, employees would have to organize together (usually without the manager knowing) and present a petition to unionize. Starbucks uses union-busting techniques in order to prevent unionization because unionization is really bad for starbucks as a company because it means they can’t treat their employees like dog shit anymore LOL. Hope that helps and if anyone has any corrections/add ons feel free!

How does one go about unionizing

The one Starbucks in Canada that has unionized is part of United Steelworkers union. I would try to get into contact with that specific stores baristas to get more information and if that union will be right for you. One you decide what union you want to organize with contact a labor organizer from that specific union and they will walk you through the steps. I'm a part of a union store in Greenville SC and I had organizers in Buffalo walk me through the process as well as leaders in the unions southern region. The actual process for me was organizing a committee in my store, gauging support, getting union cards signed(more than 60 percent would be ideal), sending the union cards in to your labor office equivalent of the NLRB (idk what the is called in Canada) then you have officially petitioned for an election.
