Yall ever wonder how some shifts even got promoted? Dont wanna toot my own horn, but I feel like my leadership skills are way better than some of my shifts(self.starbucksbaristas)

100%. A shift at my store spends her entire shift in the back or standing planted at registered scrolling the ipad looking at random apps while we are incredibly busy. When we close with her she does absolutely nothing while whining to us about when she can leave and said shes just there for “emotional support”. Maybe if you did something we could leave sooner 🙄🙄
Roolita42 points1y ago
I would talk to your SM/DM about that because being “emotional support” is absolutely nowhere in our job description
Perfect-Leadership5845 points1y ago
yes absolutely 100% i eventually changed my availability just to avoid closing with this specific shift because i’d end up making decisions like when to start closing tasks during down time and we’d always leave late because it takes her the whole closing shift to count the money. it doesn’t matter if they started at 1:30 or 5:30, it takes them their entire shift to do the count/pull so they’re in the back all the time including during our rush :) and if you call them to the front because god forbid you need help they’re upset about it.

This doesn't apply to all shifts!! i'm not saying this in a bitter way but a matter of fact way lol but yes, the way to get promoted in starbucks most of the time is through sucking up and being able to "talk starbucks" if you will. If you can regurgitate starbucks goals and principles and what not. It doesn't help that starbucks pretty much has cheat sheets for the rubric youre graded on in these promotion interviews so you can know exactly how you should be answering. In addition to that, like a lot of companies, starbucks makes a habit of keeping people from promoting if they will do more than they're supposed to without actually being promoted for it. So if you see a barista that always does shift responsibilities without complaint or a shift who acts like an ASM/SM and they don't get promoted it's because they're being taken advantage of 💛

Omg yes!!!!!! I was literally having this conversation with my coworkers yesterday, and i said the exact same thing i swear it’s about being a kiss ass and well frankly im not the one lol
ecw20026 points1y ago
y’all i just wanted a raise 😭
Mx0rion5 points1y ago
i wasn't attacking you, just the company 😭 i started with "this doesn't apply to all shifts!!"
BluAngelSpedd4 points1y ago
heyy im trying to get promoted- can you tell me where i can find the "cheat sheets"?
amalia13lightning8 points1y ago
your SM will give you development pages. literally just say the same things in your own words.

We have a shift at my store who wants to be promoted to ASM or preferably SM but he’s always doing extra stuff. We all feel so bad for him because we know they’ll never want to promote him because of how much they can take advantage of him. The worst part is he’s been a store manager of a different coffee shop and has tons of other experience. He’s totally overqualified compared to a lot of others I’ve seen.
Mx0rion3 points1y ago
yeeeaahh we have a shift here that's been here for years and p much ran the store instead our previous SM, and she recently wanted to apply to be an ASM and she's not getting it for those same reasons, instead the DMs baby/dog/house sitter who has worked at Starbucks for two years is? mmm seems fishy to me but okay lol. and we also have three baristas that consistently run the floor and do the shift tasks like the pull/milk counts/temp checks/etc and our current SM told a shift she isn't promoting 2/3 of them for the exact reason (the other isn't 18 yet)
Electrical_Metal_10620 points1y ago
Yes! And I’m a shift myself. I also wonder how some people have been promoted to SM.
overturned2316 points1y ago

Yep i have a 5 shifts at my store. The main one opens monday thru friday. And my manager is at the store more days out of the week than not. Whenever the manager is there, this shift never leaves early. But whenever the manager isn't there, she leaves early. And the reason why she can do that is normally because there's a second shift supervisor that's there but it's not their turn for being the shift yet until she clocks out and goes home then the second shift supervisor can start their handling of everything. But until the first shift supervisor leaves, then 2nd shift is just there as a barista. But the main shift supervisor takes advantage of that and leaves early all the time whenever the manager is not there. A while ago during a snowstorm, she was the only shift supervisor at the store and she ended up leaving early and left three of us Baristas at the store and gave the store keys to the most tenured barista. Then her and I are always double barring and I'm on hot bar and she's on cold bar and she will always have her phone propped up on something and she will sometimes be FaceTiming with her daughter or she will always be on the floor on ovens but she will be texting with her boyfriend or her daughter. There have been a bunch of times where we really needed her help on the floor and we were drowning but she was in the back pretending to do dishes whenever somebody walked back there but she was really texting on her phone and sometimes talking on her phone.
pink-smoke8 points1y ago
Report all of this to your manager, especially leaving the store without a manager on duty
Responsible_Snow71092 points1y ago
Apparently a couple of us have all complained to my manager about a few things that have to do with this specific said and one of my co-workers that had complained to the manager about something that had to do with this same exact shift, apparently my manager told my co-worker that can't really do anything how about that. I also complained about her to my manager I told her that she always leaves early even when the other shift is not even on as a shift yet. The girl is still employed so I guess my manager has never done anything about any of that...😑 idk I just wish my manager would take some action when it comes to her because it's just insane how much she gets away with
anonbaristaandstuff7 points1y ago
Why do all shitty shifts pretend to do dishes??? I swear this girl just sprays water in the sink during peak so it sounds like she’s doing something
Responsible_Snow71093 points1y ago
Lolol same! I cannot for the life of me figure out why pretending to do dishes is always the go-to for shitty shifts lol like stop pretending to do dishes...just go to the bathroom
krym32zamoon5 points1y ago
Yup. It's wild how some of them will act and get away with it. Yet others who have a much better grasp on everything are kept at a lower level and not promoted. Like mentioned it really is just a how well you can suck up and speak like a Starbucks automated system. It's not about your actual skill set. Plus managers won't like to double down and be harsh on shifts if they're doing things they can get written up/fired for. But if a regular barista does something then you better believe they'll be talked to/written up/have action taken. Always try to first talk about the issue with the Shift directly. Then bring it up to the Manager to have them speak with the Shift. When everything fails contact your DM.

This is one of our mid shifts that come in. I stg they do nothing and expect us to do all their work while they sits on their ass in the back on their phone. But will come out when it’s not busy anymore Our manager is too soft to do or say anything too
anonbaristaandstuff3 points1y ago
I know one shift got promoted bc she complained to management about a coworker getting promoted and not her. She’s so bad too I dread working with her🫥
pixieanonn2 points1y ago
Public fuck you @ Maddie at my old store. I was a night crew supervisor and she was a morning/midday supervisor. Constantly leaving huge messes for night crew (piles of dishes, grounds all over the floor, puddles of water by the ice bin, leaving her old drinks around the store), never threw out her boxes from the pull, never prepped anything for night crew, didn’t have a single part of cleaning done when I’d be in at 3pm, never washed her hands after the bathroom or breaks (or literally ever), would stand around and do nothing and then freak out when any mild inconvenience happened. Sat on her phone in the back for hours. Aside from being absolutely ass at her job, she would rub everyone’s back as she passed behind you, or she’d rub your shoulders or touch you in SOME WAY, many of us reported her to our SM but she didn’t give a shit cause they were friends and Maddie loved to suck some manager ass.
pixieanonn1 points1y ago
PSA: don’t be like maddie.
asunya2 points1y ago
nah frrrr, some shifts are just baristas with keys 🤷♀️
Month_Puzzleheaded2 points1y ago
The last three shifts are my store have been so useless, they came with no experience and had try to make things whatever way they feel it will be easy for them. One was an entitle girl who thought our job was to make sure everything ran smoothly for her, no complaints from customers, no need from her and that she wouldn’t have to get out from the back unless her “besties” were working the same hours as her. On top of that, she was rude to non-English speakers and would make fun of them; store manager never did anything to stop her behavior. The second shift didn’t know how to bar whatsoever, or how to deal with brinks and whenever it was time to run breaks she would ask another partner who to sent and how to set up the play. Thank goodness they are gone but there’s still one left who is always on a rush, thinks he knows better than everyone else, doesn’t listen to advice and never leaves prep for the next crew or even leave clean dishes for them. And yet the store manager wouldn’t do anything about them even when few partners had complained about them, she would just take their side. That’s why so many people have left my store.
squidwardstentacl32 points1y ago
My old shift lead was a partner for 3 months and didn’t know how to do anything but window …
happypoptart01 points1y ago
Yes!!!!! I completely agree! I’m a shift and proud to be a reliable, consistent, thoughtful one who is able to support all, but two others at my store have me questioning how they got promoted and still a shift?! I like being the shift that everyone wants and needs but i’m moving soon and stepping down to a barista when doing so which has me worried about the shifts I will encounter there. I’ve been a closing shift for 5 years so i’m excited to be a barista and not have to worry about everything and everyone all at once, but I will admit I will miss it a little tiny bit
Decent_Wall13801 points1y ago
i had a shift try to turn on the alarm as i was still doing dishes 🙄
aspiringgrandpa1 points1y ago
y’all make me so thankful for my shifts… they’re all so helpful and nice i look forward to working with every one of them 🥹

yes, 100%. from a baristas standpoint, some shifts arent meant to hold the shift position
