Grande Rant (self.starbucksbaristas)

I just need to get this out. I put one of my DTO partners on cafe/mob bar today so he could gain some confidence and start to get his feet under him. He’s a nice guy trying to move from night to morning and he’s going to have to start getting comfortable with the volume as he does. He was going okay, definitely not moving really fast, but I was supervising while on DTO and helping him with cold bar orders and stuff like that.

Anyway, we hit a rush and I had to tell some people to be patient and if they had a problem with the wait time in the cafe I would happily give them our DM’s card because my partner was doing his very best. I moved him quick as I could and have him his ten. Walked back a bit later and found him crying. Poor guy was completely overwhelmed by the negativity and stress. I couldn’t even tell him that it would get better because… well, it won’t. Starbucks customers are just Like This and no matter how fast he gets, somebody’s gonna be bothered. I ended up sitting with him and just telling him to let it out. He’s okay, it just fucking sucks here.

:( poor guy. it’s great that you sat with him, though. having support like that can make all the difference

It was the least I could do. I’d been left alone to cry in the back room too many times rip

I think if Starbucks would actually protect us from the expectation that customers have of their order being ready as fast as a vending machine dispenses a can of coke it would make us have faith in this company again. Yes they give us agency to not take hardcore abuse but the entitlement some customers display is abuse too.

As a fellow partner we need to all just relax a little bit and realize that nothing about working for Starbucks or buying from Starbucks is THAT serious. It really stresses me out when my coworkers are all running around in hyper speed and killing themselves over the littlest shit, it’s not enjoyable or productive to be in that work environment. I’ve gotten to the point where I can be fast when I want to be if i’m drive bar, but Starbucks will always be busy and there will always be a wait time and there will ALWAYS be unrealistic expectations the company and customers have for the baristas, so just relax and be chill and work normally. I understand being emotional because you’re overwhelmed and new but lmfao crying over some asshole being upset because they had to wait for a drink (which everyone knows it takes time and Starbucks is notoriously busy) is just dumb to me

Tbh I know you meant it as an abbreviation of ‘mobile,’ but “Mob Bar” suits the handoff plane at peak very well

you seem like such a great shift. it’s so sweet that you comforted him. honestly the customers don’t bother me as much when i have my favorite coworkers around 🥹 i hope he feels the same soon

I think the fact that you sat with him says a lot. As green beans we are usually afraid if we can’t keep up we could be replaced. I have had my moments of not being quick enough, customers being impatient and my supervisor hovering over me to make sure I’m not screwing up. It’s not an easy job to do but as you gain confidence it does get easier. The best thing you can do is keep him going back at it, after he has had that little break. Sometime it is just a moment of frustration that overwhelms someone. I have had those moments myself, but find that once I get back into it, I get a little more confident.
