Baristas just don’t get lunches anymore?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Appropriate_Yam3050
Anyone know what’s going on? Our stores latest schedules have been like this- literally no barista is working over 6 hours so my hours and a lot of peoples hours have just been cut drastically. All the shifts get their full work shifts and all that still, which is good for them, but why are we getting cut and not scheduled for anything over 5.75? I know it’s different across states but I’ve talked to people on other states who said that they’ve been cut to whatever the lunch mark is for them, so .25 hours short of a lunch for them as well. Anyone know what this is and are we allowed to discuss it with the store manager?

It’s for a few reasons:
•it makes planning the shifts much easier since the SSV doesn’t need plan for multiple 30 min breaks around food pulls, money management, prep/restock, and unexpected rushes
•you don’t need additional partners covering for breaks/you can better ensure that the partners schedules are actually on the floor, so if there’s 4 partners scheduled you will actually have 4 partners working and not 3 because of the need to give everyone breaks
• partners get more money for less time. If you’re scheduled for 6 hours you get 5.5 hours of pay (since you get a 30 min unpaid break), but if you’re there for 5.75 hours you get 5.75 hours of pay, meaning you actually get paid *more* by working 5.75 hours than 6. Multiply that by 4-5 days a week and that’s an extra hour of pay and while still being at work for an hour less.

I understand how it makes it easier for the shifts and how we could be technically getting paid more for working “shorter” but I used to get solid 7&8 hour shifts, and more days off because I’m in school so it helped balance it all. Just trying to figure out if that’s not gonna be able to happen anymore?

Well if you’re working 7-8 hour shifts that’s obviously more than what I said, but if the question is between a 6 hour shift with an unpaid 30 min break and a 5.75 hour shift, the 5.75 hour shift gives you more pay for less time at work.
If your total hours have been cut, I’d ask to see what your stores Weekly Labor Recap looks like or see if favoritism is at play.

Thank you for the info! I appreciate it a lot!

talk to your SM about it. there's only about once or twice a week a non-shift at my store gets a lunch, and each day only 2 shifts on average get a lunch. it makes my job so much easier not constantly worrying about those extra breaks, and from what I've heard pretty much all of our baristas prefer not having longer shifts. but as long as your SM isn't a dick hole, asking for fewer, longer shifts shouldn't be a problem

This helps! Thanks a ton!

This is 100% something to discuss with your SM if it’s a problem for you. There’s no reason they can’t do this, but you should also voice your concerns when you have them!

Okay! I’ll give it a shot, thank you!

yeah it's happening at my store too. even the ssvs are affected at my store too, and some of them are parents/have families they have to support but were getting ~25-30 hours a week for a while. it's slowly getting better but it's nowhere near where it needs to be for everyone.

Yeah that’s what I’ve been hearing. I especially feel for the parents, that’s really rough. But yes, hopefully things get better!

I very rarely get more than a 5.75 shift. The days I have worked 8 hours I want to die at the end of the day lol
Appropriate_Yam3050 [OP]1 points1y ago
Makes sense! I’m the opposite. I like to work the long shifts so that I can spend work days working and off days doing homework- it’s a good balance I had a month or so ago but now I’m stuck working half of what I’m used to, and an extra day.

yeah I heard Howard Schultz came down on the labor budgets so all the sm’s have been scrambling to cut hours. At least that’s what I’ve been told. 5.75 hour shifts are like the only ones I work :’)

Haha I feel ya! That’s all I’ve got for the next schedules!
