how do I approach my SM about applying to become a SSV? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ManufacturerOk5442
hi y’all! so I’ve been working for my location for abt 9 months now. the turn over rate at my store is kinda ridiculous, but I know they consider me to be one of the more “experienced” baristas/barista trainers. Other SSV’s have told me personally that they think I would be good for the position & that they have told my SM that. but my SM keeps out hiring for SSV positions and it’s honestly a little frustrating.

1. My SM feels like people who don’t work for Starbucks have more to offer than the partners who have been around for quite some time

2. Most of our SSV’s are out hires and are still struggling with the basics (which I don’t blame them for whatsoever, they never really had to chance to REALLY learn the basics)

3. My SM has told me they specifically aren’t going to promote certain people because they feel like they don’t display good leadership skills (even tho they just haven’t really been given the opportunity)

So I guess this whole long rant is just to say I feel really nervous about asking bc I don’t feel like I’m good enough. Or like my SM puts me in the same boat with the people who are really good baristas but don’t have good leadership skills.

Any open SSV positions have to be available for you to apply to. If no one in-store applies, then the SM will have to outside hire

Go and see if your store still has open positions and apply for it!

Oh yeah, I know that! Sorry I definitely forgot to explain that we’ve actually had a few SSV positions open for a few months now. I know some of my coworkers already applied a bit ago, but my SM told them that they didn’t think they had the leadership qualities. So I guess that’s also why I’m scared bc I thought those baristas would made great SSV’s!

Just tell your store manager that you are interested in becoming a shift supervisor. If they don't think you're at the point of interviewing ask them if you can schedule a partner development meeting with them to discuss your development plan and the things you need to work on using the barista and shift supervisor approach. You can find those if you search on partner hub. Thats really like the gold standard of what starbucks wants for career progression. I'm an SM and personally avoid outside hiring SSVs at all costs, but it is also on the partner to own their own development.

You can apply for another store in your area. It’s worth a shot.

A heads up-make sure you know all the Starbucks jargon (LATTE, ACT, shift pattern, etc.) Everyone seems to be so focused on the words you say rather than the meaning behind them. Good luck!
