why do people care what someone buys with their money(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by coffee_angel801
I'm at a Starbucks in a grocery store and because we are a grocery store people can buy cold drinks on food stamps Not a lot of people do it but there are a few, some of my baristas get so mad about it I don't see what the big deal is. The same baristas get mad when panhandlers buy coffee with change they think there money should be used for something more sustainable I am personally don't know what the big deal is.

Tbh SNAP should provide way more money and cover a broader variety things tbh. Americans absolutely believe that poor people deserve to suffer and shouldn't lead dignified lives.
thestoneethude5 points1y ago
i wish snap would cover house hold items that low income families need. i shouldn’t be scrounging around my house for money for toilet paper.
friendlySkeletor6 points1y ago
Exactly! Also gas, transit passes (which should just be free but eh), and a certain amount of hot food imo.

It's just because they don't like people that are more poor than them. It makes them feel good, knowing there's someone below them to shit on.
A warm cup of coffee is sometimes one of the few things that that can make someone's day living on the streets, especially when there's not much else one can afford. Even the poorest of us still deserve comforts in life
uwumoment2 points1y ago
i agree with you, but i just was wondering, i have heard people say certain types of governmental assistance like snap or ebt only let people buy cold things, so would this apply to starbucks drinks as well? like no hot latte, just frappuccinos or refreshers, iced teas etc?
coffee_angel801 [OP]4 points1y ago
Yes ebt only works on cold drinks and cold food so on ebt u can buy a sandwich or pastry just not heated
uwumoment1 points1y ago
aw that’s no fair i hope partners who ring up customers with ebt warm it anyway if they want it warm, bc i definitely would
coffee_angel801 [OP]1 points1y ago
I do warm it when I can but have to be careful if caught by the wrong person could.lose your job

ebt is for people struggling to make ends meet. it’s supposed to be supplemental. if you’re getting overpriced drinks with that money instead of sensible food, you don’t need it.
DreyaNova8 points1y ago
It’s sad to me that we’re at the end of the world and all struggling to get by but still turning on each other instead of the ultra-rich tax dodgers who put us is this situation.

because people think that poor people don’t deserve nice things :^)

Puritanical American society at it's worst. There's a subconscious mind set that people should suffer for their sins and poor people must be sinners or they would be reaping their just bounties. That sort of person believes they're good people that work for THEIR starbucks drink, so how dare a poor person get their drink for "free". Even though a majority of people food stamps are working.
PercyGabriel112916 points1y ago
When people spend food stamps on extremely expensive items like a singular drink from Starbucks instead of a bulk food or something, it upsets me because it makes me think of how my mother would do the same thing when I was younger. My sister and I weren't able to get decent sized meals because she decided to spend it on random, expensive items. But I understand not everyone who does it has kids, or that not everyone does it often. Just irks me a bit
Initial-Chance-5735 points1y ago
Thanks for sharing that perspective. I never really thought too much of it b/c the places I had worked at never accepted it.
rileyannschneider13 points1y ago
exactly !!! just because someone has food stamps doesn’t mean they don’t deserve coffee from sbux
philosopher_cat_lady12 points1y ago
I literally work at a licensed Starbucks in a grocery store and buy my drinks with my SNAP. Fuck any of your coworkers who say anything negative about your customers who do. I can't even get started on how much bullshit that is. "They're wasting their SNAP on a $6 Frappuccino." Yeah, maybe they should get MORE than $192 a month for food to LIVE OFF. "They're using my tax money on Frappuccinos." Fuck you, money is a man-made concept, you don't deserve a Frappuccino any more than the next person. Your coworkers are ignorant as shit.
Broad-Flounder-49713 points1y ago
$192?! I get like $900 something and it’s for five people, but even that is only just enough. How the fuck can you manage $200 without cutting corners 😅
bringitonlife3 points1y ago
I get $160. 💀
Broad-Flounder-49711 points1y ago
Oh noooo that’s like one and half weeks of food the fuckkkk
rudebii11 points1y ago
There wasn’t enough time in the day for me to care about how strangers spend their money.
Comfortable-Plane94411 points1y ago
❤️ I agree with you.
Blondeeeelatte8 points1y ago
We’re on food stamps, and it actually lets us buy luxuries I could have never dreamed of as a kid growing up. This is illinois, so I don’t know if they just give a lot, my dad has the card, but this might also be the case for those people. Also they might just be budgeting well and that’s what they splurge on. Def not the other Barista’s place to judge.
lavendersigil7 points1y ago
Hot coffee should be an EBT benefit. Hot food should also be EBT. Everyone deserves a warm food or beverage especially in the colder months
Broad-Flounder-49716 points1y ago
I work at sbux and I’m on SNAP 😅 it’s barely enough to feed my brood of devil children and their need for constant fresh produce what with inflation. I would never waste any of that money on something from sbux. Sooo expensive. That said, what someone uses their FOOD MONEY for is up to them. I budget so that I can buy my kids tons of healthy snacks and I’ll eat ramen if need be. Lots of pasta cause it’s cheap.
Don’t worry. People on SNAP are still suffering despite our paltry government assistance 😊
bringitonlife3 points1y ago
Idk why the baristas care that much about how people pay. Like we aren’t in a better position, we literally work at Starbucks. I don’t even care how someone chooses to pay, as long as they don’t give me $100 to break for a $5 order at 7AM, I’m cool with whatever and I just need you to get the hell out of my drive thru ASAP.
Literally don’t hate on poor people, hate the system that divided all of us into these types of classes.
elainafromthemoon2 points1y ago
I’ve told off coworkers for that. Poor people deserve something nice every once in a while. And also!!!! It’s none of their business!
FloridaUniversity2 points1y ago
Those baristas have never been on food stamps and if they have they should know better than to judge!!!
Yes I would be that barista that would sell “cold food” and toast it up because everybody deserves a warm meal.
Edit**
Also if they have such a problem with it, how about instead of accepting the ebt they get a group of people together and use their ‘free drink’ option to surprise some of the snap people every once in a while?
Sustainability.., what’s more sustainable than sbux- it’s in the gdang mission statement ..
Sorry this really got me crossed

I have no problem with people using food stamps to purchase their cup of coffee. My Starbucks is in a very ghetto neighborhood though so we used to get sooooo many homeless people bothering our customers — knocking on their windows at drive thru or following them to and from their car that I would admittedly get frustrated whenever a customer would go out of their way to buy something. It resulted in more of them sitting by the bus stop right next to us and loitering around causing way too many disruptions. For example, in my first week at this store, we had one shin on our bathroom floor, one threaten to kill one of our baristas, a girl give head to another dude for some Wingstop, and one get arrested for constantly trying to clean the cars coming through window without permission. Cup of water? Of course. But stop panhandling right outside our store then proceed to light up a pipe right afterwards twenty from our store.
coffee_angel801 [OP]2 points1y ago
I just don't know why.people pay that much attention to the form of payment someone uses for a drink. However our store will launch Starbucks connect in August and at that point we will no longer be able to accept EBT as a form of payment because the new system will not allow it.
tacticalcop2 points1y ago
let them know that just because you don’t have much money, doesn’t mean you must deprive yourself of all things good. im allowed to have a coffee even though i’m disabled and almost entirely rely on my boyfriend and my disability.

it’s one thing when someone dumps a bunch of change on the counter and you have to count it like yeah, it’s annoying. but judging ebt? it’s none of your business and it’s easy to ignore and even easier to just move on with your day? i guess poor people don’t deserve to drink coffee now guys
