Habits to learn as a new barista? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by baebaebluebird
About to start as a barista. Are there any small or niche things I should keep in mind of/ be in the habit of? I wanna make sure I’m able to keep up with my coworkers and not be a nuisance especially with minor things that could just be annoying or slow the pace down. Please and thanks!

1. close your ice bins
2. don't leave your milks out (it's a health/temperature thing - depending on how fast you get through them, like say during peak, it might be okay to leave a 2% on the counter because you'll run out of it before it can go below temp anyway. but putting milks away also helps with...)
3. keep your workspace tidy so you and others can navigate it efficiently. put things away, rinse equipment after use, wipe down when you get a second, etc etc.
4. make sure to communicate between stations: "hey, -bar partner-, make sure you dont make that grande pike, i already grabbed it!" "hey, -pos partner-, i'm putting in the second to last impossible sandwich, you may want to mark it out."
that's what i could think of off the top of my head on my 10. hope it helps!

communication is HUGE, for example if you’re on resister and you pour a coffee for a customer just let whoever’s on bar know that you already got it, or when you need things restocked, or if you need help. also never be afraid to ask questions, if you forget a recipe or how to do something don’t be scared to ask, it takes a while to memorize it all

yes! and to always make sure of what they’re ordering, lots of them don’t know the difference between a dragon drink and the one w lemonade.

When you are restocking a station for someone else, try to stay out of their way. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen green beans stand right in the middle of the bar while slowly filling lids.

Always say “behind” when walking behind someone. Or when sharing a space, let the other partner know where you’re moving. “Coming in for ice” “I’m on your left” etc.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! It is a sign of strength, not weakness to admit that you need help.

Be willing to fail. We all have failed, disappointed the customer, ourselves and our team. You can only do what you can do. Remember, it’s just coffee.

When you can be anything in this world, choose to be kind!

Omg i have some co-workers, not necessarily green beans but they're not too tenured either, I'm on Hotbar and they're coming to stock the fridges with milks, they will open both fridge doors as wide as possible and then I'm trying to finish Lattes or shaken espressos and I have to stretch my arms out and reach towards the espresso machine because they're taking up all the space on hot bar by having the two fridge doors wide open.

And I'm so glad that there's someone else that says "behind you" when you're coming up behind someone because at my store, I will be on hot bar and then I will reach over to put a mobile order drink on one of the risers or to hand off a drink to an in-store customer, and then the person that's working on ovens will literally be standing directly behind me without a peep because they need to put the food on the mobile order risers or hand out the food to someone waiting in store and so I'll turn around and I'll bump so hard into them because I don't expect someone to be standing behind me without saying a damn word

Sounds like you’re working with a bunch of lurkers! I turned around once with two drinks-one in each hand and slammed so hard into someone who was just standing behind me! I’m lucky nobody got burnt!

Lmao yess lurkers! I work with a few of them!

Your situation reminds me of a time when I went to go grab a hot coffee for a mobile order but came through and the girl that I work with that was on register.... I guess we just accidentally bumped into each other because after she rung up her customer at the register, she turned towards my direction so fast and we just both accidentally bump into each other at the same time and it was just a mistake but I was the one holding a hot coffee in my hand and it spilled on my hand and I burned my hand end she got irritated with me. Like I'm the one that burned myself and I didn't even get mad at her because I know it's not her fault it's just something that happens in small spaces. She didn't even get anything on her if she got upset with me just because we bumped into each other
