Yall got two entire days of training?
ziiggii_8 14 points 1y ago
When I started like 4 months ago I got 1 week of training it was on the iPad and 2 days on the floor then the following week I was shadowing my trainer for like 1 day then I was coverage on the floor. We just hired a new person and they are on week 3.5 of training. I seen somewhere on the updates that new hires get 2 weeks of training now and current partners can request for training to the SM if they feel they need some more training on specific things. Don't quote me but I'm almost sure that's what the update said.
Loh-Doh 20 points 1y ago
I'm glad. The number of new hires I've seen say that they were given 6 hours of training and then were thrown to the wolves was... well, a lot of them.
ziiggii_8 6 points 1y ago
That's insane! I could not imagine a 6 hour crash course I'm thankful I got a whole week.

lmao. i trained on hot bar for a good hour, then was put on DTO. was trained on cold bar for maybe another 2 hours, then put back on DTO.

that was it. i was never trained again, and every other time i’ve been put on bar is for light coverage (10s, maybe a lunch here or there). i’m better on cold bar because that’s where i’ve gotten most of my training and experience. but even then, i **still** see a sticker here and there and ask “how do you make this?”

consequently i’m 7 months in and i feel brand new on bar every time i’m put on, and it is now unfortunately a self-fulfilling prophecy. i suck at making drinks, so they’ll keep me on DTO/DTR or warming. when they give me a chance, i inevitably drive our window time up and make drinks wrong because i’ve never been trained. thus i stay on DTO and never learn.

it’s disheartening to know new hires are getting full shifts with an experienced partner, who is coded as non-cov precisely to just train the partner for the whole day. whereas my training consisted of “hey can you train him on cold bar i have to do my pull” and then getting half assed training that lasted one to two hours

it’s whatever at this point. i’m in so deep that now people legitimately think i just suck at making drinks when i was never given the chance. i learned that the 2-3-4 rule doesn’t apply to hot bar just a month ago. i feel so sorry for everyone’s drinks i’ve ever fucked up.
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Wow I'm so sorry that your training experience went this way. It is not policy at all. That would make me feel nervous coming into work. What about online training?
I will agree that you *might* be in too deep, and you probably wish you said something earlier. If I were in that position I would honestly anonymously call another store and ask them what they think you could do, partner to partner. Idk what a DSM would say about this at this point.
However, I think the best tools for you to learn are $1 study guide, the recipe cards that are all together, and on partner hub there is also a shots/pumps guide.
I will totally send you all of my training notes for each station if you'd like. (I hope I am allowed to do that?)
Beneficial-Base5698 2 points 1y ago
Yea that’s was me. And I was a externally hired shift.
SupermanLover1418 1 points 1y ago
I had no training. Started the first day and shadowed everyone. We didn’t have a store manager so that’s probably why. After the first two weeks I was doing opening shifts alone
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 3 points 1y ago
No, I just meant day two so far. :) My training is two weeks
mars_redacted 5 points 1y ago
i’m glad you got to keep the drinks! my manager would have all trainees throw out their drinks after they made them. always made me wonder why she would complain about waste if she had us throw our drinks away 🧐
Mysterious_Funny_925 1 points 1y ago
That doesn't make any sense??? I mean we are literally partners working and we can't keep some drinks that are going to be thrown out anyways???
TylerJ716 4 points 1y ago
I'm training someone on their second day! :D how cool !
ThrashPanda67 3 points 1y ago
Why are you hoarding them and not gifting them out to customers as you make them? That is the standard at my store.
abandon_hopeless 5 points 1y ago
The store is probably closed my guy. I know I did my bar training after hours
ThrashPanda67 2 points 1y ago
Super weird! I remember I had to do mine like 4-8 so we gave out most of the drinks.
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I did mine in the morning, about 10am. We were slower by this point but I did offer them to a few customers, who declined because they had their drinks already. I shared them with my parents and girlfriend after my shift :)
KiwiBeginning4 4 points 1y ago
when i was training all the drinks got thrown out
Fine-Entrepreneur-61 3 points 1y ago
when i trained, my manager threw out the drinks after i tasted them just in case if customers ask how a drink tastes then i would have an idea

I did my training not too long ago. Needless to say the customers were more than happy for my free practice drinks and slip ups lol
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 1 points 1y ago
It was not busy when I made mine, that's why I kept them. I did offer to a few but they had a drink so did not want them. 11 days later and I am loving it, how is it for you?
MrMattimo 1 points 1y ago
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I'm only 5 days in but the store is closed this week because our location is moving down a few business spaces to a building with a drive through. Used to be a Carl's Jr but covid killed the store so Starbucks bought that property.
RubySapphireSage 2 points 1y ago
You got this !!!
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thank you. I am loving it all except for register and the headsets
SusieSlaughter 2 points 1y ago
I had a headset yesterday and it would not stay on my head for the life of me. I was getting so frustrated!
SusieSlaughter 2 points 1y ago
Can I ask how long training normally lasts? I’m on day 3. I didn’t get to make cool drinks on day 2. 🥺
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I believe two weeks, my SM set out a 2 week training plan for me. I started with hot bar, then cold, then Frappuccinos, grinding + roasting coffee, and today I made no drinks and it was all good warming and POS/register. My first work week is 36 hours! (I'm part time) I would suggest taking a lot of notes for shots, pumps, and special things certain drinks get. (Shots on top, ristretto shots, etc.) I wrote down all of this $1
SusieSlaughter 1 points 1y ago
Very cool! Thanks for sharing your experience. And thank you so much for linking me to that study guide! I have previous barista experience, but the place i was at didn’t make frappucinos or refreshers. Did you get tips during training? I got $2 handed to me in a tip bag with my name on it on Wednesday. Totally wasn’t expecting it lol.
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Of course, I totally didn't expect my post to blow up on a smaller scale! And yes and no, in my state at least there is a policy where partners can not accept individual tips and must direct the customer to the tip jar to be split. I'm not sure if tips are a part of my check yet but we do split them
SusieSlaughter 1 points 1y ago
That makes sense. Where I worked previously we weren’t allowed individual tips as well. I was just surprised I was included in the tip drop on my third day! 😄

You got this bro/broski
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thank you, bro/broski!
madisonla 2 points 1y ago
Wow…. My store REALLLY needs to up their training game I didn’t learn drinks until 3 months in and I’m STILL asking questions
DragMeThroughHell [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Whaaaat, I am seeing a lot of partners have totally different experiences. I am now seeing I got really lucky w my SM and trainer
Alternative-Rent5653 2 points 1y ago
ah yes the sticker game as we call it in my store, new partners have to choose stickers covering their eyes and they have to make the drink
