Leave of absence - mental health (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RainBootsinSummer
In short: if you have any experience with taking a leave of absence, what steps are taken for it. What do I have to tell my manager, what should I leave out? Is there anything I can fill out *before* talking with her to make things faster/easier, or do I need to wait to discuss with her? Am I eligible for a leave of absence, is there anything that would make me not eligible?

In long: I am a 9 month partner, never been written up for anything. Very much part time seeing as for those 9 months I’ve been in school. My average hours are 12-18 a week. Don’t have any issues at the store, but I am likely going into an eating disorder residential sooner rather than later. I would be going to a facility for 30-45 days and not be able to leave or (obviously) work. I will likely have my phone and would be able contact someone if needed, but only at certain times and such. I am not sure if I’m eligible for a leave of absence but I also really really don’t want to quit because I love my job. Money is not an issue, so I’m not worried about being paid while I’m gone I just don’t want to lose my job (duh). I’m obviously gonna be able to get a medical note and all that. I am going on early to talk with my manager tomorrow about a leave of absence, but I don’t know if I should do anything before that meeting, such as contacting sedgewick first or bringing in a doctor’s note first. Also, is there any details I should not explain for my sake. I’m not so much worried about talking about this stuff, but more so I am worried that it could be used against me in the process of getting my leave cleared. My manager is great and I don’t have issues with her this is more so in terms of logistically or higher up problems.

Thank you so much in advance, I don’t have a lot of support at home with this stuff so any and all help would be appreciated.

I went into ED residential two years ago while working for Sbux, I got a leave of absence and it was awkward but my manager just listened to me. Ultimately there's nothing you can do or fill out before hand, you just have to have the conversation. Good luck!

How long did it take for you to get it approved-I just found out I’ll be leaving somewhat soon.

Honestly I don't really remember, I was so stressed out about the subject in the first place, they basically handled it all for me. I feel like a few weeks but we also were a really small, slow store (after we reopened post pandemic) so 🤷
