Pay for the person behind me string(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lilmissambersue
Does anyone else get annoyed when people start doing that?? Like, it's super nice and all, but....if you're going to spend money on a stranger, why can't you just tip us more, or at all?? I probably sound bitter as fuck rn honestly lol

I put a stop to it every time.
“I’d like to pay for the person behind me”
“Okay, sure”
*Next car*
“Hey, sorry about your wait, it’s on me today”
They drive away.

😦 that’s such a dick move
MLGTheForkOnTheLeft9 points1y ago
No, whats a dick move is someone trying to start a pay chain (which in itself is really thoughtful and nice BUT..) and it doesnt help us baristas.
Lots of customers think they with prices going up that WE get paid more because of it. No. Starbucks makes money from that, not us. We get paid what we get paid. And any pay raises that are coming to whatever stores in a couple of months is NOT from price raises, its because corporate is afraid of more unionizing.

What does our pay rate have to do with anything? the world is so cruel why would you not let people display an act of kindness??? pay chains restore my faith in humanity a little bit
CompassesByNorthWest5 points1y ago
If it’s in the middle of peak and someone starts it, I let it go for a car or two and then I cut it off. I wouldn’t mind it if there wasn’t such pressure to keep times down, and it gets frustrating having my two screens not be aligned.
By doing it this way I get the best of both worlds, I get to pass on some kindness, and I can also get my connection score up by saying it’s on us.
I especially do it if the chain would result in someone who ordered just a pike being pressured to pay for a $20+ order.
cannabitchhhh33 points1y ago
if i’m not in the mood for a PIF chain, i tell the person at the window that the next person ordered mobile and already paid.
Fine_Ad185113 points1y ago
One time the guy was like “ok I’ll pay for the person BEHIND them then”
canidieyet_14 points1y ago
then i tell them the system won’t let us look that far back LOL
CompassesByNorthWest5 points1y ago
That’s why you just tell them it’s on us. It ends the train and also gets your connection score up lmao
purseEffphony3 points1y ago
I do this too. Or I found that accepting the payment getting the order all set for the next customer and handing it off to them with a smile and You're All Set! Works well. Sometimes they protest and say they didnt pay but in that case inform them that their order has been paid for by someone else and tell them to have a great day. They usually move on quickly because now they are holding up the line.
Sometimes telling them that thenperson behind them is a mobile order can backfire if the customer KNOWS the person behind them.
rudebii17 points1y ago
You know? once the customer drives off, you aren't really beholden to their requests, so why not just stop the chain as they leave and continue on like it never happened?
lilmissambersue [OP]5 points1y ago
That is a good point!
LaurabelleBabe14 points1y ago
Honestly I agree we definitely do deserve more tips with the crap we put up with but I still think it restores my faith in humanity a little bit when somebody decides to pay for the car behind them.
xDlolzor-3 points1y ago
Thank you for being the only nice person on this thread wtf
Kings_and_Dragons4 points1y ago
You can be nice by giving money to underpaid baristas instead of making them do more work to give money to someone in line who already has the money to pay in their pocket 😕
xDlolzor2 points1y ago
People can do both. It’s not wrong to want to brighten someone else’s day.
canidieyet_9 points1y ago
it is really nice when people start a PIF chain. but honestly 95% of the time i’m soloing drive and it’s really stressful as is to make sure orders are being takin correctly, orders are being handed out correctly, and the line is moving quickly as is. having to worry about remembering what the next person in line had & that their order was already paid for just adds to it. if i’m not soloing i don’t mind it as much
rnaggie539 points1y ago
Hey if this happens u can either tell the next person to please end it & usually they will ORRR what I do is scan the next ppls app/take their card like they’re paying- but just don’t charge them. They’ll never get charged or know
lutracore6 points1y ago
Oh I can't stand pay it forward chains lmao. Literally nothing but self gratification because the person doing it is like "thEyRE goNnA thInk sO hIghLy oF mE I maDe theIR daY" and even we as baristas are expected to tell them it was so very nice of them. not a SINGLE person who I've dealt with who has wanted to start a PIF chain has ever tipped. the person behind you will be fine, they're paying 11.50 for a souped up drink (and its counter productive because theyre gonna pay for the person behind them anyway). I use tips to pay for groceries when bills eat up my paycheck. all you're doing is patting yourself on the back and holding up the damn line. hit em with a "sorry, the person behind you was a mobile order"
dazedinreverse4 points1y ago
I always just say "the person behind you mobile ordered so its already paid for" i dont have the patience
empathetic_tomatoes2 points1y ago
Is it okay if we do both? Like I always double tip if I can anyway, but I also don't mind paying for someone's similarly priced beverage after me.
SelocAvrap2 points1y ago
The registers in the drive thru aren't designed to handle pay it forward chains, and it makes the life of the barista behind the counter twice as hard until the chain ends. That process can also slow down the drive thru, and slower drive thru times can get baristas in trouble
I've seen it put this way: the person behind you wouldn't be there if they couldn't pay for their drink, but your barista is making barely above minimum wage with very few hours. A big tip does more to make someone's day better than pay it forward does
Ultimately, it's up to you what you want to do with your money, but baristas are extremely grateful to you for not doing that

i kinda talk them out of it, especially if their order was cheap and the person behind them isn’t. this girl got caught up in a chain and only got a white mocha, but the person behind her had a $30 order. i was like “are you sure? 😬” and she put a couple bucks on their thing.
unfortunately, doing their payment plus subtracting 8 bucks is more annoying.
i should use the tips some of y’all have commented.

our store has so many mobile orders that i usually just say it’s a mobile order and people believe me. 😂
