what is the most incorrect thing you’ve seen a partner do? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by orangeygirly
At my old store, an older woman was hired, she was a sweetheart but she struggled on bar.
One day I pulled a sticker for a Frappuccino, put it on the iced cup and handed it to her… she read it thoroughly, and then a few seconds later she’s STEAMING MILK. I had to take a second before correcting her so she wouldn’t see me laughing😭

Serve a “coffee” from an urn being cleaned. I only found out about it when the customer came back and said their coffee tasted like chemicals and asked why it was blue. The barista said they thought it was weird the coffee was blue, but served it anyway 🤯😱😱😱
voxinx 20 points 1y ago
there should be a plastic cover on the urn spigot thingy so u don’t use it when you’re cleaning one with urnex
nosunshineforme 9 points 1y ago
Oh, there was. But when we ran out of coffee, that was the only urn with something in it. Instead of asking how to make more coffee (they were pretty green) or asking someone to help, they just went past the sign and upturned spigot and went for it.

Omg I heard a story of that happening at my store before I transferred here. I’m at a mall Starbucks
orangeygirly [OP] 19 points 1y ago
They should be so thankful for that customer sparing them from a lawsuit
Torirock10 16 points 1y ago
WHYYY WOULD THEY SERVE IT ANYWAYSYUAAY
astivana 14 points 1y ago
Did that partner stay a partner? Cause that seems like the kind of lack of good judgment around food that should get a person separated.
nosunshineforme 6 points 1y ago
She did stay a partner, though mostly worked register. She was not the sharpest tool in the shed…we absolutely gave her a hard time about it though, I think she learned that lesson quick.
paolathepanda 11 points 1y ago
Dear lord idk how they didn't bother asking someone if that was normal ahhh!!! I'd be fuming ngl if I was that customer

Unscrew the whip cream dispenser before releasing all the pressure
catarinavanilla 17 points 1y ago
One time I was making whips and my mind was elsewhere and I charged a whipped cream lid. Just the lid. All the NO went WHOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH and everyone stared at me bc I am clearly an idiot. So embarrassing back then (what was I doing 🤦‍♀️) and now I have a good story to make people feel better when they fuck up
Marty_the_Smarty 2 points 1y ago
Oh! I did this once to scare my co-worker. It made an awful squeal noise, my manager in the back was like, “What was that? Marty, was that you?” Joke was on me though. I got NO on my finger and it freezer burned the tip. Hurt like a mother.

This person was very new and they had just finished training and we were in the worst Saturday rush I’ve ever experienced. I was organizing drinks while taking orders for the drive thru and was wondering why all the strawberry açaí drinks looked so dark. I asked them privately (so they wouldn’t be embarrassed) what they had been using and they pointed to the passion tango tea pitcher. So ,,, all our refresher drinks for like 15 minutes were tea. To be fair at the time our strawberry açaí pitcher and passion tango pitcher looked really similar lol.

Add cold water to cold milk to steam it for a chai latte.
PiscesQueen24 10 points 1y ago
Okay so I’m guilty of doing this , what’s the difference between hot water and cold water
Bhaisaab86 12 points 1y ago
Just the temperature. But now that I’m thinking about it, it honestly seems like it would create a much more consistent quality drink. The standard is fill the cup halfway with hot water. But everyone’s “halfway” is different. Using the steaming pitcher lines however, that’s a big brain move.

Edit: I’ve seen people fill water to around ⅓ the cup, I’ve seen ⅔, I’ve even seen partners leave only an inch of room for milk.
kirbykyd 14 points 1y ago
In the “olden days” it was to fill the cup with hot water to the siren’s eyes.
Bhaisaab86 6 points 1y ago
Yeah, I remember holding every cup up to the light to see if I put too little or too much.
Electrical_Metal_106 2 points 1y ago
This is the stuff us newer people need. I love to get tips like this. Thank you.
PiscesQueen24 7 points 1y ago
I simply do it so I don’t have to walk to the hot water spout and it saves me more time , I don’t really taste a difference and it’s more uniform in taste to me equal parts milk equal water
Electrical_Metal_106 1 points 1y ago
I’ve never thought to do this but it actually makes sense to do it this way. I might do a taste test on my next shift to see any difference.
Sbux_King 17 points 1y ago
That's funny lol. But when I was a green bean a long time ago lol, I didn't know how many pumps of Vanilla went to making WC. So I put like half a bottle for days until my SM noticed and asked why the Whips were super sweet.

Another story.... I was a shift by then, I ran the floor and it was a Sunday and super busy. This green bean was planted to Front and Warming. As customers are ordering breakfast sandwiches and pastries, he would give them a Blueberry Scone 😂😂. Not one customer noticed until an hour later, customers are coming back claiming they received warmed up blueberry scones. When I confronted the green bean, he told me in full confidence, "I think it's better for them". 😂😂😂. When I had to explain this to my SM (at the time), we died of laughter.

I have seen one of my co-workers during a busy time come help me on hot bar and there was a shaken espresso order for a brown sugar shaken espresso and they did it just as a latte. I've seen coworkers put cold water in iced chai tea lattes. When the timer goes off for the iced tea pitcher, I've seen Partners take the tea bag out and they wouldn't add event a scoop of ice or cold water but instead they would put hot water in there and I've seen some Partners not put the ice in there but they would just do cold water all the way. A few Partners I work with also don't pour enough milk in the steaming pitcher so when they're helping me on bar and I go to finish a drink they started, the drink fills the cup up with about 2 inches of room left which in turn makes me scoop the foam out and steam more milk. I've seen a partner go to make regular cold from and they used two percent milk and I told them they can't do that and they told me that they got it and continued to use it on a drink. I've seen partners grind enough beans for a quarter batch but they would Brew it on the half batch option and vice versa. I'm sure there's so many more but I can't think of anymore right now

guilty of adding water to iced chais for my first three months 😳
Responsible_Snow7109 3 points 1y ago
Lol that's totally understandable. I'm not knocking people for doing that lol especially since baristas only really do it when theyre not too far along in the job. Lol since my store things that I seen happen at my store.

i saw someone put malt powder into a grande iced cup while they were steaming milk to make a hot chocolate with it
7beforeminutes5 6 points 1y ago
You know… I bet that actually tastes pretty yummy. I think that might be my drink I try for samples sometime!
Electrical_Metal_106 3 points 1y ago
We tried it when we recently ran out of mocha. It tastes like a hot chocolate malt. It wasn’t great for me. I think I would maybe add an extra scoop of powder and maybe a pump of syrup- maybe vanilla or toffee nut.

When i was a greenbean, one of the first times i made a misto I somehow ended up accidentally only putting steamed milk and hot water for some reason.. I gave her hot coffee on the side and she never said anything 😳
uselesslesbianism 5 points 1y ago
- fully build a shaken espresso in the cup, put the shaker lid on, then give it a few swirls

- for an ice water, fill the cup with ice then put hot water over it

- use brewed chai every time someone’s ordered a hot chai latte. wouldn’t even put milk in there. just the tea bags and water. took me so long to catch that one because every time i heard a customer order one i would say to the partner “hey don’t forget hot chais get water” and they were like “yeah yeah” and so i just assumed they understood
ParamedicEmotional43 1 points 1y ago
We do the ice and hot water one at our store, because our hot water tastes better than our cold for some reason. We only do it for baristas though cause we don’t have the time to walk across the bar while it’s busy, unless the customer asks for a princess water
uselesslesbianism 1 points 1y ago
oh wow that’s actually really interesting! might have to try that tomorrow
binf--bird 5 points 1y ago
I saw a barista put oat milk up to the milk line in a shaker, then ice, then the syrup, THEN the espresso for a BOSE. I let her shake it then asked if that’s how she always made them. Luckily she said no but I was stunned. I also caught my then manager doing something similar, but he claimed he always made them like that 🙃 we were apparently serving brown sugar oat milk lattes for a month before I saw it
bazzyzazzy 5 points 1y ago
There was one girl who started the same time as me and had pissed off pretty much everybody at the store by that point. I was working an opening shift with her and our SSV asked her to brew a full pike. She asked me how many scoops it was and I walked her through the brewing process despite the fact that she’d been trained by the same girl as me, so I knew for a fact that she’d been trained on brewing. I go back to what I was doing and after a few minutes, I turn around when my shift goes “what the fuck?!” Turns out she has brewed a full pike on top of the half batch of blonde that I had brewed before that. It was clearly labeled as being blonde and the pitcher’s indicator showed it had coffee in it. She was just… so stupid.

Attempting to brew coffee with whole beans. She didn’t understand why the coffee was so pale when she tried to pour it. 🤦‍♀️
alerollerblades 3 points 1y ago
i once had a green bean, about a month out of training, make a mocha three separate times because she was making it with cold water. she didn’t think to ask what she was doing wrong until the second attempt and by that time it was already batch two ruined. we had a good laugh about it.

We had an older guy that once during peak spilled an entire keg of cold brew (while brewing) in the back. He then proceeded to pour the bag and the leftover liquid straight into our large trash can 🥴
mama_bibi 2 points 1y ago
A girl screwed in the charger for the whips without the cap being on the whip canister. Worst noise I've ever heard
sarahtilton_ 2 points 1y ago
To be honest, I'm still pretty green and there were so many things I didn't catch on to in training because it went so fast that I just kind of guess until someone corrects me. They always say "it's okay to ask questions" but how am I supposed to ask how many pumps of white mocha go into a grande wmf in the middle of our rush when literally every person is occupied?

If someone could answer that question that'd be great
animeilove1219 1 points 1y ago
Grande standard drinks hot and cold get 4 pumps unless not a standard build. Then the number changes.
heyumsorryitsme 1 points 1y ago
3 pumps!!! but youll get it very soon dw!
