Question about clocking in/out(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nobody_here_42
Obligatory I'm not a partner, but my kiddo is. I have question about clocking out during closing. If it's 2 person close (barista and SSV), the barista has to stay until the SSV can leave due to policy. If the barista is done, but has to wait on the SSV in order to leave, does the barista still get paid until they're allowed to leave, or are they forced to stay on premises unpaid? (For context, an hour and some after scheduled time)

They are supposed to get paid if they are waiting bc they are obligated to stay however the SSV may ask so they don’t violate the minor hours my SSV does it for me bc she knows I don’t mind and she is clocked out too. If it’s an hour like in the OP your kid should be getting paid have ur kid contact the sm

Thanks for the answer. That's what I thought. I should have clarified that kiddo is over 18. I was surprised when they sent a text saying they were still at work so late, but already clocked out. They said they were just sitting, thus not getting paid. It didn't sound right to me.

It’s mostly a safety issue, it’s safer to walk in a group than alone

I totally get that. I've worked fast food, and even in the 90's that was industry standard. My question was about whether they should still be on the clock, because they weren't.

I would definitely encourage your kiddo to bring this to the attention of the SM, though it baffles me how they wouldn’t already know. Maybe I’ve just had really good luck at the stores I’ve worked at or the SSV’s I’ve worked with, but no SSV should be having to stay even 30 min past a scheduled shift, unless something major happened, which should be an anomaly...
If I am closing and my barista has finished their tasks and is waiting on me to finish finalizing the deposit or whatnot, I will always have them stay on the clock until I am clocking out. But really that has been five minutes of them waiting around. It blows my mind your kiddo would have to wait an hour :-(
Somethings up, I would encourage your kiddo to not put up with this scenario.

Thanks. That's why was playing 20 questions with them when they said they were still at work an hour after close. I even said that if it's more then a few minutes past scheduled out, there's usually something very wrong. (IE store closed at 8, scheduled end time was 830, but still there at 930) I guess the SSV was getting notes about things not getting done in spite of them getting done, so wanted to make *sure* everything was done tonight. This was in addition to already working 5 hours extra because someone called out.

Aw man, poor kid. Sometimes it’s hard, no matter how old we are, to stand up for ourselves when we are experiencing something like this.
The SSV should take into account that they need to change the way they are running the entire shift to account for whatever these things are that aren’t getting done. You can’t just tac on an hour to someone’s time (unpaid at that!) to get done tasks that should be allotted for.
I am definitely hoping the best for your daughter/son! You’re a terrific parent to reach out for answers from other people in your child’s line of work :)

Per policy, if they’re required to be in the store due to it being a two person close then they should be paid for that time
Now if it’s a “clock out while I submit this then we’ll leave” that’s a little different

With a 2 person close both partners have to be on the clock and in the building.
If it’s a 3 partner close we have occasionally had the their partner (generally if they are a minor) clock out and leave on time and we (the other 2) will finish up. We admittedly are in a really safe location, so walking out alone isn’t a super huge deal.

an hour is a long time to stay after a scheduled close, i would definitely encourage them to stay on the clock until everyone’s on their way out, but if it’s just a couple minutes while the ssv is grabbing their keys and whatnot then i guess it’s okay

At my store, everyone clocks out together minutes before the alarm is turn on and we leave. Even if some end up just sitting around doing nothing while waiting to clock out.
