Hey everyone, just a quick noob question. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ThisGuyTokes420
I'm a green bean, been on for about a month. I got the job because I discovered I like espresso a lot more than drip coffee, but as far as the language goes it's a real learning curve. I almost feel as though the "complicated" drinks are easier to make, because it's all right on the ticket. Then I get a regular grande flat white and can't remember if it's 2 or 3 pumps/2 or 3 shots. Once I get stuck on one if it's busy I start to fall apart. And don't even get me started on Fraps, I've already accepted defeat on those...

I'm pretty strong on everything so far, except for the bar. I feel like training just goes out the window as soon as I get even a little bit busy. When should I be expected to be able to handle a smaller rush without having to ask questions to confirm I'm doing things correct?

I just don't want to be that person who can't be put on bar because I don't have confidence that I'm making everything right.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly, it’s all about practice and muscle memory.

They wanted me to pass drink sequencing when I hardly knew what went into the drinks. Finally, they all saw my struggles and relented.

My store believes bar is the hardest to master because it’s only in doing it we can master it.

My SM said to create a cheat-sheet with pumps and shots. Whatever I need to do to help remember what goes in what. With practice, we won’t any such helps.

I’m pretty good now but that’s only because I’ve spent a lot of time on the bar. (I also have a notebook with notes I reference if I forget something.)

So, take a deep breath and practice as much as you can!

Cheat sheet was my next go to. Thanks for the advice!

I’ve worked here for eight months now and I still struggle with bar. I have all the measurements down, but I’m just not as fast as I want/need to be. I’m usually the go to for warming because I’m much better at that. There’s a pattern I’m seeing at my store that anyone who’s good on warming struggles with bar, and visa versa.

Give grace to yourself and have patience and honestly, just ask all the questions!! If someone acts like its bothering them, so be it. You'll learn by repetition and if it takes verbal repetition for that to stuff to sink in, so be it! You'll get there, it just takes time :)
