What do you think? Would this be wrong?(self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m a SSV and I have decided to resign from Starbucks, but I’m feeling very guilty about just giving a two-week notice. About a month ago I told my SM that I’m planning on leaving in the near future (within a few months) to move to a city and go to school. I told them I’d try to give a good enough notice as possible. But after my last shift, I’ve decided I can’t work there any longer. The toxic environment has sent my mental health in the gutter. I’ve been crying and experiencing severe anxiety about even going back at all after my last shift and the situation I am now a part of. And unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to make it better except for possibly contacting the DM but others have done it in that past and nothing changes and I’m afraid it might just make things worse for me and other partners.
There are others in training for the position, but are not quite ready to lead on their own and I’m afraid they won’t be by the time I leave. And we have very little amount of shifts at my store. But with the circumstances I’m under, I feel that I can’t wait any longer then two weeks. I feel bad about letting down the team, but in this situation, I have to put myself first for once and I’m afraid about poor treatment I might experience after I turn in my letter of resignation. Advice? Would it be wrong of me to do this?

If Starbucks were to fire you, would they give your life any consideration? 2 weeks is a courtesy. We had a shift quit by not showing up or answering calls. Waited 4 hours to quit via text to a partner. Absolute trash. 2 weeks is great. Take care of yourself.

Thank you for this. Too be honest, yesterday I definitely wanted to do that. I am so scared to face my sm and team after that shift, but luckily I collected myself and tried to think and plan logically.

I wrote up my note but waiting for the right time to present it. I’ve been off since that shift and I’ll see my sm tomorrow but then won’t until way later into the week. Trying to get the courage to do it then.

So how did it go?

Put yourself first, it’s that simple. Ask if you can connect with your SM and present the notice and talk with them about it. Don’t let them convince you to compromise, you have made up your mind. You don’t owe Starbucks anything and you shouldn’t feel guilty about leaving when it’s your mental health on the line. I just recently left, I gave my 2 week notice and I cried to my SM about it because I loved my team and was more sad about missing them all. HOWEVER, the demand of this job is a lot and dealing with what we have to as baristas (regardless of titles) is not worth the mental strain AT ALL, especially when no one gets paid enough. Also, if they mistreat/retaliate against you after giving your notice, report it to your DM and PCC.

You gave them a good enough notice. Do NOT spend any more time in an environment that is toxic to you. The way I see it, you gave them a heads up a month ago that you would be leaving shortly, plus a hard 2 weeks, that's 6 weeks. And if something is so bad that contacting the DM and worried about being treated badly after putting in your notice, that sounds like internal issues, not general working with the public. If they treat you badly, walk out the door. Put yourself first. And honestly if the SM is that bad that they will treat you badly for putting in notice, they're probably going to mark you as no rehireable anyway, don't take ill treatment. If the other shifts aren't ready to lead in 2 weeks, that's on your SM for not getting them the training they need, not you.

Thank you. I haven’t had a chance to put in the formal two week notice in just yet but these comments are helping me feel better about going through with it. The letter is wrote up and ready. Just need the right moment which will probably be tomorrow. I hope I don’t chicken out 🫠 lol

I would also send it to the store email. So they can't say they didn't get it.

You don't owe Starbucks anything. They'll make billions with or without you

Do what you need to do. I also felt guilt when I resigned but two weeks notice is plenty. They will find someone else, and you can get the time to better take care of your stress and mental health ☺️ starbucks gave me physical pains in my chest from stress, and since I quit, those have gone away.

Ex Store Manager here. Do NOT feel bad about it. You have to take care of yourself and your mental health. From my experience at the end of the day they are a giant corporation that doesn’t care and they will survive.

im about to give my notice. as much as i love my coworkers, i got a better job elsewhere and it is more beneficial to my mental health if i leave. plus i will be doing a work term for school in the fall, and i know that starbucks will likely not be accommodating when i begin it
