How does the communal tip cup work at a typical Starbucks location? I am not an employee.(self.starbucksbaristas)

My only experience working in an establishment where tipping was the norm was as a busboy for a year back in high school. Back then at the end of the night every server would give $3 of their tips for me bussing their tables all night. Anyways, so how does that magical communal tip cup plus digital tips work? My confusion is specifically when a barista leaves during the middle of the day but the tip cup remains out and seemingly untouched all day? Honestly curious. I try to not be a dick and tipped $30 today into the tip cup this morning when got a Memorial Day drink. I know that my favorite barista would be gone long before that tip jar is so just want to make sure that she is getting her fair share somehow? Thank you for any insight you can provide.

That’s a bit of a bummer as I wanted to tip extra hard for the unfortunate baristas making my coffee on a major holiday:-( But I am glad that it seems like a relatively fair and straightforward system.

A bit of a bummer but largely a pretty fair system given how much work everyone puts into any given day. Even the baristas working a holiday were supported by the baristas working the day before!

You can ask for a pasty bag write down their name and give it to them. We’ve been told we can take “gifts” hand it to them and *run* jk on the running but I’ve seen ppl do this in front of the sm and she said it counts as a “gift”

Tips are collected at the end of the night, and then divided between the baristas and allotted by hours worked for that week.

Tips are calculated every week. A sheet is printed that details all hours worked. The tip person divides the total tips from all seven days by the hours worked. So everyone is paid the same per hour, the whole team.

I give tips to my special baristas in an envelope with their name. I do it every quarter. Large tip better than who knows what percentage they received.

Thanks for all the responses, I might try the pastry bag gift next holiday — I’m looking at you 4th of July:-)

Usually tips accrued on a holiday are divided by the Barista's who worked that holiday. The rest of the weeks tips are divided by the amount of hours they work for that week.
