Advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cryptidbf
Hi everyone. I’m considering applying to a Starbucks in my area. There’s just one problem, I have some pretty bad anxiety and I’m afraid it will be like my first job (not at Starbucks) where I wasn’t trained properly, barely at all in fact, and was thrown onto the drive through with barely any supervision my first day. Would working at Starbucks be bad for someone with anxiety like me? Do they actually train? I’m hoping it’s something that will get easier overtime and will help me come out of my shell. Thanks for anyone who leaves a response answering my question or giving any advice.😁

I’m quite an anxious person myself, but working at Starbucks has been my best job experience. I know there’s a lot of negativity on here about the job, and by no means is the job perfect (no job is), but I find the benefits outweigh the negatives of the job for myself specifically. Doesn’t mean that will apply to everyone though.

I think what makes the biggest difference is the store specifically. Unfortunately, each store can be totally different. I got extremely lucky and started at a store with such an amazing store manager and coworkers who really took the time to train me for the most part and were supportive for someone like me who has major anxiety and worries about every little thing. I also took it upon myself to memorize drink recipes and store routines, just so that I felt I could do my best at work and ease some of my anxiety.

Long story short, it really depends on the store you work at. The coworkers and store manager can really make or break the experience. I will say though, as someone with major anxiety I’ve done well working here. There’s stressful times and problems here and there, but as someone who’s worked at several places I will say no job is perfect, and it’s important to remember that. As someone with anxiety, I’ve learned a lot of it has to do with how much I let my anxiety control me, and less to do with my job. Any job will make my anxiety worse, if I let it do that.

I say give the job a shot! To me there’s no harm in trying it out, that’s the only way to get perspective and figure out if it’s for you. You should only consider what anyone else says to a certain extent, as only you’ll know if it’s specifically good for you. Also, the benefits of the job are amazing!

Good luck ✨ Feel free to DM me for help/guidance about the job :)

I’m so sorry. Did the manager explain why? Maybe your availability? If possible, apply to multiple stores in your area! It increases the likelihood of getting hired.

Okay thank you! They didn’t say:’) Its probably due to me not having significant job experience. I’ve applied to 10+ jobs and nothing 😭

I’m so sorry :( I would try contacting the store managers at the other locations and let them know you’re eager for a job!

every store is different. I was trained at a staffed, cafe only store and then sent to an understaffed drive thru store and it was a rough transition. if your anxiety is social, Starbucks might not be the best job. they really push interacting and connecting to customers

I see! My social anxiety is pretty much non-existent these days so I don’t think thats a problem. My anxiety is more towards about making mistakes haha

A huge part of the job is about making mistakes and learning with asking questions. One co worker of mine who has been there 10 years has asked me (who has been there for 4 months) a question.

This is spot on, never be afraid to ask questions. Tbh one of my favorite things about the job is we can all ask each other questions and it’s not a big deal and no one treats me like I’m stupid for not knowing everything, it’s a supportive environment (at least in my experience)

Same! Unfortunately not everywhere is the same I feel for those people

I struggle with anxiety and depression, and I honestly feel that Starbucks made my mental health issues worse. It really depends on the store you work at, but I worked at and regularly covered for 8-10 different stores in 2 different states over the course of 4 years. All of those stores had slight differences, but all had difficult customers and impossible expectations. They train you pretty well in my experience, my first week was just learning and practicing making drinks and register. But after that you’re thrown to the wolves and if you don’t have a shift supervisor who has your back it can be pretty intense.

All the training in the world doesn’t prepare you for when you tell a customer you can’t put their Tupperware of personal mix ins into our blenders because it’s a health code violation, and your manager walks up behind you and tells you to “just say yes.” Starbucks is a world of double standards, impossible drive times to beat, and power-hungry Karens who will threaten to call the police on you because you can’t get the app working for their previous stars. If that doesn’t sound like something you can handle on at least a weekly basis, it may not be the job for you 🤷‍♀️

Hey! Semi-new barista here! Every store is very different, but in all honesty, the situation you described is exactly how my experience was/is. I personally didn't have too big an issue with it though because the job is pretty repetitive so it comes to you eventually.

That’s good to hear!! Was memorizing too big of an issue for you?
Real-Ostrich-1380 2 points 1y ago
For a long time I thought I wouldn't memorize them at all, but after just going for it on bar it just kinda came to me honestly. I still don't think I entirely have it down, because weirdly enough if I'm present on bar I can make the drink, but sitting here right now I can't tell you how to make some off the top of my head- it's just kind of muscle memory.

I'm still a green bean (late Jan hire) and I was pretty much thrown to the wolves. Thankfully I pick up registers pretty quick, but even now with most of my time spent taking orders in drive through, I get stuck sometimes. Also thankfully, my fellow morning partners rock and are always available for help.

I have anxiety too. My first job I was trained for 20mins and the girl who trained me said she didn’t want to train me. I was so nervous but honestly a lot of the trainers I’ve meet are super nice and want you to learn! You can always ask for more training shifts it won’t hurt your hours or get you in any sort of trouble it’s just some extra time for you to go over things! If you have any questions feel free to dm me
