Some questions from a fellow barista who doesn’t work at a Starbucks(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by saltplant23
Genuinely just asking because I’m curious and have been wondering some things for a while.
1. Do you make good tips? Asking bc for me at my coffee shop my tips make up majority of my income. 2. Do y’all have drink caps? because my shop does not and when people come through asking for 11 drinks I want to scream and cry 3. How long is a normal shift and do you get breaks? 4. What’s the worst drink to make (for me it’s anything frozen)
My experience as a barista, I work at a small drive through coffee hut which at max holds two workers. I love it but at the same time I do all of the work (plus 1 coworker for majority of the shift) , I do the register, I have to take people’s orders and memorize them (can’t write them down), I also make the drinks and food. On top of this our drive through is two sided so we work on two different cars orders at the same time. Normal shift with no breaks for me is either 6am-1pm or 7am-3pm not including the hour it takes me to close. I just wanted to see how my experience compares to a Starbucks baristas experience. Thanks to anyone who answers :)
Edit: my hourly is $11 but I make on average $120 in tips a day

1. I usually make about $20 a week in tips, fine here since the hourly is good but at my server job I make much much more
2. No drink caps people can order as much as they want! I think there’s a limit on mobile orders but you can place as many mobile orders as you want to get around it. Drive thru can be hell when people order 8 Frappuccinos lmao
3. I usually work 6 hour shifts, can be as long as 8. 6 hour shifts get one 10-minute break, anything longer gets two 10s and a 30 minute lunch
4. I hate making Frappuccinos! So yes frozen drinks lol

I don’t understand how people don’t realize how much time 8 drinks takes to make, like if you want that much coffee go to a cafe

1. no. i work at a drive thru only store and ppl steal our tips if we leave them in reach so most customers don't even know we take them. i get like $15 every two weeks :/
2. nope 😭 ppl regularly order 6+ drinks. most ive ever gotten at once was 17
3. i'm a minor, so most of mine are 4 hrs. i have a couple 7 hr ones scheduled once im out of school tho. i get one 10 halfway through my 4 hr shifts and a 30 min unpaid lunch for the 7 hr ones
4. any hyper-customized frap or refresher is time consuming and annoying af

1. No, I usually get 80-90 cents an hour in tips with a wage of $12.60. But tip rates can vary wildly between stores
2. No, not at all
3. My shifts are anywhere from 4-9 hours. You get a paid 10-minute break for every 4 hours and an unpaid 30 if you work 6 hours or more.
5. The app allows some ridiculous customizations that simply don’t make sense, so … any of those

As a shift, I make $19.69/hour as a base salary and then tips are extra. This last pay period I took home about $17/hr after taxes.

I also don't work at a Starbucks, but I work at another coffee chain with a drive-thru
1. depends on the day. some days I make $1, some days I make $8. Depends on how long I work, how many people work, and how much money is given 2. No - we often have people coming in during rush ordering 15 drinks plus food 3. I know some people who only work 2 hours. Some other work 8. Typical shift is 6 hours long and we never get official breaks where you can sit in a chair. It's basically, whenever it's not busy and everything is stocked and clean, you can sit on chest freezers and stools. 4. Where I work we have peanut butter drinks. They can only be blended and they're annoying but tasty 5. I make $9/hr lmao

Hi! I work in Southern California so my answers are specific to that area but ill give it a go!
1. I make pretty bad tips, I work almost 40 hours a week and usually make 10-15 dollars but I do work in a bad area 2. Nope :,) people order up to 20 drinks and food sometimes 3. For my store a normal is about 4.5-5 and I had to practically beg for 8. Anything less that 5 gets you one 10 minute, more than 5 is a 30 min lunch and a ten, and more that i believe 6 is a lunch and two tens. 4. My personal least fav are iced matchas because i hate shaking them and they foam up so much, but blended drinks are a close second

Tips really depend on your location, can be anywhere from $.50-$2 more per hour. In august base pay in the US will be minimum $15
Mobiles are limited to 12 per order, cafe and drive are not
Depends on how your manager schedules it, anywhere from 4-8 hours
10min paid breaks and 30 min (for a 6hr or more shift) unpaid breaks
Honey citrus mint tea

I agree with most of the comments I’m seeing so far, but I’m all for helping someone gather info.
1. I wouldn’t say they’re good, I do the tips for our store and we’re usually at $0.60-$0.80 an hour for tips with most people aside from shift supervisors only working 20 hrs a week. We do have a decent base pay because Starbucks in our state have already moved to the $15 min for baristas.
2. Nope, and between drive thru, mobiles/deliveries, and cafe we’ve gotten orders of 10+ drinks from all different ordering methods, yes, even in the drive thru, it sucks.
3. My normal shift is between 4hrs and 5.75 (so we don’t get a lunch). For the most part at my store the only people who work longer shifts are the supervisors or people who are barista trainers when they are training someone. Everyone always gets a 10 min break, and a lunch and a second 10 min break depending on how long a shift is.
4. I would say drinks that aren’t meant to be multiple drinks in one, but because of customizations, basically any drink that doesn’t already get cold foam having cold foam added. Or refreshers being blended with a lot of non-standard components.
For me the thing I DO like about Starbucks is the health insurance for everyone working an average of 20hrs a week or more. Starbucks is my second job, so I don’t work a ton of hours there, but it’s nice to have that benefit.
