reporting an sm/is this worth reporting? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ivysear
this might be lengthy, so bear with me.

we got a new sm sometime around the summer last year. from many personal accounts and talking with other coworkers and their experiences, i believe our sm is worth reporting.

1.) we have had her fire multiple people. i brought up the point all of them were minorities in some way, such as lgbtq, racial minorities… our store is predominantly white

2.) said people she fired, she would consistent berate them and bully them, one girl quit because of how said sm was treating her, belittling her after a situation was blown out of proportion (such as her having an attitude/having a bad day) when in reality i think and others think coaching would have done her justice

3.) there is a shift chat. i was told that apparently we arent supposed to have shift chats within apps such as imessage or so. not only that, i have been told by a shift that our sm constantly berated, gaslights, and guilt trips our ssv’s in the group, seemingly manic switching from kind to an absolute asshole. they have proof of things being said.

4.) there was a boy who wanted to try and pick up shifts at a new store opening up, and he phrased it wrong saying he wanted to transfer temporarily to boost his skills and knowledge. he showed us text proof of our sm jumping to conclusions saying when he goes to that store he cannot transfer back, which i know is bs because one of our shifts transferred to a new store than back because it was intimidating and awful.

5.) sm constantly talks shit about baristas, ive heard that apparently i am never in dress code which is why i havent been scheduled hours since january. last week i worked one day, even though SM begged me to open up my availability to give me more hours which i did, and yet… barely getting hours.

6.) sm apparently has a list of baristas to send to a new store and one for certain baristas to say at current store. a coworker told me an account of her saying she didnt want to go to new store and sm openly admitting to coworker being on a keep list.

7.) coworker who is a minor has personal struggles shes been open to sm about. said coworker injured herself badly and could not come in so we closed early. sm decided to threaten to fire her and guilt trip her.
— EDIT: she texted sm to ask for a shift covered for graduation, sm said she would be on it. sm didnt follow through and is threatening to fire her for not showing up for graduation saying “other people graduate”. once again said coworker is a minor

8.) she lacks complete empathy, said she talked with old sm and old sm said a couple shifts shouldve been fired but its believed sm spun a lie

9.) person works clean play which ends 10:30-11:30 or something and gets scheduled to open so it isnt even a max of 8 hours

there might be more but i need to know when and how to report her since i have a couple of coworkers who want to do the same

How do you plan on "reporting" your SM? Do you intend to speak to the DM or file a complaint with ethics? In either case, be careful and don't expect it to change anything. In the end, it's a lot easier to replace baristas and SSVs than it is to replace an SM. Your SM sounds like a nightmare but doesn't seem to have reached a level of misconduct that could leave to any real consequences (unless discrimination could be proven, which, itself, would require a high burden of proof). Transfer out if you can.

It is worth it, i remember i sent my DM a lengthy and well versed email about lack of accountability and favoritism from my sm and well to put it shortly she don’t work at my store anymore soo… definitely talk yo shit

From personal experience, I had a SM who was almost exactly like this. They were openly racist, homophobic, constantly made fun of/talked down on baristas & shifts for being religious, ect.. I say give it a shot on reporting them. We took a chance and spoke with ethics & our DM and wouldn’t leave either alone until we finally saw progress and an end result. The SM got fired but it also took MONTHS and our entire store had to band together and keep filing complaints and reports to our DM and ethics. But again, it’s worth a shot.
